13th State of the Barrio Address (SOBA): Sayonara anonymous commenters

by reynz on November 16, 2009

Barrio Rank 170First, let me thank all of you for your continued support of Barrio Siete. Our unbelievable meteoric rise in the Philippine blogging community is brought to you not by prakter & gambul but ewan ko, maganda lang talaga kami siguro.

Almost 6 months in the blogging world, we in Barrio Siete are just very happy to have accomplished that Alexa ranking of 170k from the over 20 million mark 6 months ago. Salamat to ya’all. Pramis. ITALY pa.

Interestingly, the topic of my 13th SOBA today, is about anonymous commenters in Barrio Siete. Malas ang mga to.

witch

According to Reyna Elena‘s witchcraft theory of assholes and jackass in blogs: anonymous commenters are generally the ones who are insulting, irresponsible and jackass compared to the ones who have genuine profiles and blogs. Put bluntly, etong mga feeling pa-intellectual, have no balls to put their true persona out and credentials but had the audacity to make tago pung! Dadaanin ka sa anonymity where they could freely insult you simply because you do not agree with them. Whereas those commenters who have their true persona and profiles out in the public, tend to behave properly, argue like a gentleman, have socially acceptable demeanor and are far more responsible.

Over the years of my blogging, I have had my share of Somalia stoning blog-style. In the Philippine blogging community, I am probably the most hated, with the longest title ever. I’ve been lynched and threatened and called names like delusional, eternal internet drama queen, jologs, barriotic, hungry CPA, jealous queen to that mother, dumb, stupid, intellectually-challenged, dumb and more. I so got used to it, I welcome the attention. It feeds my ego and temporarily cures my attention deficit syndrome.

In Barrio Siete, we took time to put our credentials out. It’s a very long story dear friends, that traces back to the medieval times of Reyna Elena versus those bloggers at kaVilang Varrio, where I was challenged about my credentials since the initial impression was simply, I was barriotic. That’s why you see it there.

And when people dislike you for your opinion, your credentials suddenly becomes an easy target. What’s my CPA title got to do with my political choices?! Por dyubos por santo! Debit parliamentary, credit presidential was not part of my CPA licensure examinations nor my being an American MBA grad. Being gay does not automatically equals dumb. I have no affiliation whatsoevah with Comelec.

It’s our choice to have our credentials out. However, it’s not right that some anonymous commenters would feast on it and use it as subject of their attack for their own twisted objectives.

While I have continually been generously accommodating to non-conformists and have encouraged discussion in this blog, we cannot control these assholes who prefers to attack me and some B7 writers on a personal level. Interestingly, the ones who love to bring it down on a personal level are the ANONYMOUS COMMENTERS. They are the ones who are mostly irresponsible and reprehensible hiding behind their anonymity. We have no idea who these people are and we have noticed an influx whenever I write an article about Noynoy and/or about CON-ASS. It’s as if some bloggers were assigned to be on the lookout for Barrio Siete just to attack.

It’s just not fair.

And I will not allow mob anonymous rule in the Barrio.

When you’re gay and you’ve done your best to be yo’-the-man in responsible commenting, whereas the the other party is not, something is terribly wrong in terms of responsible commenting.

Therefore, beginning today, sayonara anonymous commenters – hasta la vista!

Any anonymous commenters will either be moderated, comments automatically thrashed to spam or will outrightly be blocked. This rule applies to our FV anti-Aquino regulars who are anonymous themselves.

This is our decision and if you’re not happy with it, COMELEC will be morally happy to hear your complaints.

Tse!

Clarification:

Kris Andres commented on my FB link: “You say B7 will not allow anonymous commenters, but as far as I can see, “annie” is considered an anonymous commenter.”

The focus on anonymous commenters are those who are leveling personal attacks. Exceptions are those anonymous commenters that I and/or B7 writers already know personally. If none of us knows you, you’ll be suspect and will banished in Spamberia.

I think Reynz that those who chose to remain to be anon in the internet are people who are not courting for trust. Meaning, lurkers can be anon. But for someone voicing out his/her opinion and attacking every angle of the post and an author, remaining anon, is just someone who doesn’t have the balls to be known.

Lam mo naman sa atin, pag di na nila mayanig intellectual capacity mo, people will revert to ad hominem. Come to think of it, some of these nimrods were properly educated. Sayang ang tuition fee…

Ayos naman blood pressure mo nyan? Haha. Ewan ko ba, no matter how “intellectual” a comment is, anonymous naman, wala ring kwenta.

Participating in public discussions, and/or public debates requires a person to submit himself to the public as well – hindi dahil personalan na, but to put value dun sa mga binibitiwan mga salita – salungat man o nagpapatotoo.

It’s simply not fair Rob. We’re out here in the open and they’re hiding. Yet they are the ones who are so brazen in their being uneducated no matter how sophisticated their writings are. This is sort of going back to that credentials discussion.

[Reply]

reynz November 16, 2009 at 12:48 pm

You should know better than that. I have no intent to silence the opposition, but I will not hesitate to silence personal attacks especially that election season is here and paid hacks are like gremlins now assigned at each blogs. Understand this is not Filipino Voices where personal attacks are allowed. I have been very lenient and accomodating to some bloggers but have been taken advantage of.

Our rule is our rule. If you’re not happy with it, there’s always the Comelec.

[Reply]

reynz November 16, 2009 at 12:59 pm

i think i was very specific with my meaning of mob rule. you don’t have to over analyze.

[Reply]

benign0 November 16, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Again, Mr. Reynz, give yourself some credit. You have a runaway hit of a collective blog and you’ve build quite a vast community of “social climbers”. Yet when the “mob” came into town to challenge your endorsement of Noynoy Aquino, you stood alone to defend your Barrio.

Where were your “friends” when you stood by your beliefs with a big stick?

That’s just a personal observation of mine, bossing. You stood up to the “attack” quite well. Trouble is, you stood alone. As far as I can see, that is a more accurate reflection of the ‘state’ of your Barrio more than anything else.

Perhaps there were some perceived personal attacks (frankly I didn’t see much of that among those “anonymous” comentors you mention here; though our standards may differ). But for the most part, I observed more depth, breadth, and substance in the ideas tabled by this “mob”. Maybe step back and regard the landscape a bit, sir. ;)

[Reply]

reynz November 16, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Reyna Elena is not Barrio Siete Benigno and vice-versa. And not all in the Barrio are supporting and/or have gone Noynoy 100%. In fact, we don’t share the same opinion on everything. However, we are not like in the other blog where they cannibalize each other. That’s the big difference.

If you are referring to the King, yes, he’s a good one which is why I gave him a space. Unfortunately in his succeeding comments, he was now attacking me directly. Not in the barrio. I will not let it happen here given that election is coming and I know that paid hacks are now all over the place.

[Reply]

benign0 November 16, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I’m not saying B7 is you or that you are B7, Mr. Reynz. But what you are to B7 is its La Kapitana. And as I mentioned above, you stood at the front like a true captain would. Trouble is your “army” wasn’t up to the task.

Of course you can argue that B7 was never meant to be an “army” against an anonymous mob, and certainly not against alleged ‘paid hacks’. But the reality is staring you in the face — that very few (if any) actually stepped up to take a position at your side at the height of this “attack” — we are talking here about B7 regulars who publicly professed an alignment with Noynoy’s campaign. In fact, you even had to do most if not all the “defending” in an article that supported his campaign but was authored by one of your closest lieutenants (who remained silent through most of the exchanges) in B7.

My question is quite simple.

What’s the point in publicly taking a postion on an issue if we are not prepared to publicly defend it?

Remember the saying back in the 60′s? “Defend it at Plaza Miranda” (or something to that effect).

[Reply]

reynz November 16, 2009 at 2:09 pm

“Trouble is your “army” wasn’t up to the task.”

You could be right and you could be wrong too.

Some in my “army” are not as inclined to battle it out with you. Maybe your strategy of across the board labeling people who support Noynoy as stupid is already a foregone conclusion as far as they are concerned with you, thus you must have “scared” their opinions away or that they see it as useless talking with you. Or maybe your too intellectual. Understand, we are barriotics.

Now, does the “army” defending has to always be upfront? What about providing ammunitions in the background? Would that be acceptable? Possible, right? Maybe my “army” views me as super Darna for letting me all out alone. Who knows. Silence is also a response. Right? We all use that all the time. Ignore button.

But if I believe in one position why would it stop me from defending it just because my barrio mates do not want to defend it with me? Is it by the numbers that I should just surrender? Or was it a mistake that I howled because I believed in “A” position? There is a point benigno.

[Reply]

Kikay November 16, 2009 at 2:21 pm

[Reply]

benign0 November 16, 2009 at 2:23 pm

For the third time, Mr. Reynz, I say that you stood up in the face of the “attack” alone, which is a quality that is quite admirable. I don’t believe I said anywhere in my last couple of comments that being alone is a sign of defeat. It merely shows that you were alone in the Barrio in having the wherewithal to remain out there to defend what you believe in. That’s all I’m saying. By no means do I say that being alone is a sign that you should quit (although this SOBA of yours seems to imply that you are in fact shutting the doors).

If you say that (1) they supplied you ‘ammo’ in the background, that (2) your Barrio see you as the only one in your Barrio who had what it takes to stand up and defend (what you call the ‘Super Darna’), and that (3) silence is in itself a message — the message of those who were, well, silent during the exchange, then so be it.

Word taken on all counts (as far as moi is concerned).

Again you have responded properly to a set of ideas put on the table to challenge the position you articulate in this blog. Like a true captain — and a true blogger. ;)

Here’s why I’m not participating with discussions like this

1.) I hate politics.
2.) I don’t have a solution to offer. If I do have one, I will ask people to participate in making it a reality.
3.) It widens the gap that already exists.
4.) I don’t like debates, in my hood, we Discuss and offer solutions.
5.) I don’t know anything about politics but I’m not that stupid to understand what’s happening and what I wish for our country.

I do hope that this won’t label me as a dumb person. Do I need to offer some proof? Why not discuss about solutions? I understand that there are many educated people commenting in this blog. So, I believe that they will be able to think of solutions instead of proving who has the best brain?

Someone is now resorting to Divide and Conquer— Divide the Barrio Peeps then Conquer LOL… Very Tyrannical LOL This would not work.

Barrio Folks are beyond the surface of the blog. We communicate regularly (as in on daily basis) behind the comments area and some of us just let Reyna do the talking since she has more patience than us. After all, she’s our Boss. You see, aside from her MBA and CPa, she also has this PhD in communicating with special children. And I think she’s good at it. We on the other hand are too average to even understand the slurring of these special children now lurking on Barrio LOL

Ever since I was a kid, I never liked Merry Go Rounds… I for one never like redundant arguments and nitpicking. My attention span is short for those “theories” that are not even worth proving. Time is precious, why converse with charlatans and delusionals? Normal people outnumber special children! so why endure the impending brain damage in understanding far fetched opinion and ideas?

I get bored on comments that instead of talking solutions and positive conversation just ends up in “pseudo-intellectual” debates and arguments that just go round and round.

Some of the Barrio folks doesn’t engage in debates that beat around the bush just because they find it more productive shutting down their computers instead reading convoluted comments.

Barrio Folk’s Mode of Operation against senseless show of pseudo intellectualism: PUSH THE IGNORE BUTTON.

Obviously, someone is irked because he is being ignored: Big Time!

These commenters have all the right to say their intellectual piece, they are given precious space to write their crap here despite the fact that they do not have any financial or productive contribution to the barrio (kahit pa makakapal ang mukha na gustong magka privilege ng mas mataas pa sa Bario writers), but begging a response from us Barrio Writers is not only a desperate move to attract attention but also a clear sign of excessive self importance…

There are many reasons now being given for not participating in the discussion. Which is bizarre, considering there were no actual calls for other people to participate (Mr. Reynz made it interesting pretty much single-handedly).

The only thing tabled here is an observation that Mr. Reynz did it alone. But to interpret that observation to suggest that the absence of the others was actually missed during the exchange is the real sense of self importance here. :D

[Reply]

@Monique, Haha oo. Ganyan din reaction namin. Minsan nga nagtatawanan na lang kami in private behind the blog haha.

Sabi ko nga, “Reynz has a PhD in communicating with special children” kami wala. Kaya logically, let the professional facilitate the catharsis hahaha Reynz have a very lengthy patience, kami talaga wala o yung iba naman meron pero wala talaga hilig sa debate.

I’ve responded, they’re around. Either in the background, holding on to their ignore buttons or listening to Manny’s song.

You must have not liked the responses by rob, mel, cora, rosa and the rest that’s why you’re doing a psywar, sort of taunting to still prove that my barrio mates left me in the air which is alsot not true.

And even if its true, I believe in what I believe. I also have explained that above.

haha.. pinagtiyagaan ko kasi basahin yung 180+ comments, nahilo lang ako sa paulit-ulit at paikot-ikot na usapan doon.. hehe.. hindi ko parin naintindihan yung point nila.. just goes to say, barriotic nga ako..

nga po pala, i hope you receive the respect you deserve, La Kapitana.. you’ve done a good job maintaining this blog and have been hospitable enough with us lurkers.. i also agree that this may be the right time to “moderate the hate” dito sa blog nyo.. pangit din talaga tingnan na kami pang mga bisita ang nanggugulo dito sa barrio..

@jules,

i hope so.. in my work (i work at a bank dito sa pinas), i know a lot of people that are smart, have good credentials but are still very unethical.. and they are even proud of that, because it means that they don’t have to conform to society, it’s the society that conforms to them..

UPDATES:

There’s a BIG LESSON to be learned with the new blog that BongV has created. It’s a lesson on HOW NOT TO START A BLOG.

I visited the blog called: Unmoderared Filipino Voices and BongV made it appear on the blog that I have responded to his entry.

BEWARE: I did not sleep with that woman! Errr… I did not ever made those comments in his blog. BongV is probably hallucinating.

Can anyone now tell me how to detect a paid hack???

Haven’t decided who to vote din. Nagririgodon na sila uli! heheh…

bongv, paid hacks or not, it’s about time. in a democracy, one also had the right to know who he’s arguing with. i don’t think it’s about silencing the opposition.

it’s just leveling the playing field and getting rid of the hooligans.

BURAOT November 17, 2009 at 5:27 am

mob rule, democracy, popular democracy.

they pretty much are the same.

BURAOT November 17, 2009 at 5:32 am

we are here benigno.

the difference with us barrio folks is that we don’t have to agree on one specific intellectual viewpoint (like some does).

nagkataon siguro na the most vocal among us do not agree on a single candidate. and that’s nothing really. we all disagree. pero we don’t go at each others throats when we do.

while it is clear upon most of us the presence of the mob, it should then be incumbent for the admin to pull the plug on those anonymous commenters in the name of fair game.

We all have a right to raise questions and voice out our opinions but sadly a majority of the so called anonymous “mob” lacks the cojones to stand up for themselves.
