What public housing and broadcast music websites can learn from the new CNN

welcome to the new cnn
The New CNN

If you’ve seen the new layout and design of CNN, you’d be impressed. Continually being on top of their game, CNN changed their layout today to a much more deliciously designed online newspaper, great photography and a lot more crispier pictures, nice layout design and tons of videos. What’s more, it’s a lot easier to share the stories you like on facebook and on twitter! Truly standing up to it’s name as the global leader. I believe, they are really tops as far as leveraging technology in delivering news and information taking multi-media to a whole new level making story telling just as powerful as ever.

Easy to do business with

What does this mean? It means more value to the reader. Easier to get information and with the richer graphical information, the sense of personalization will captivate the reader. In my mind, this was exactly what Michael Hammer was saying when he wrote the book, The Agenda, making it easier on your customers – for CNN, their readers. What CNN has done was connecting more with its readers and with all the share buttons at the bottom of each news article, they were making it more social. There’s only one thing missing for CNN to make this a truly social media network, a comment box where readers could reply and make comments.

The radio broadcasting industry

Interestingly, broadcast media has not picked up on the new breed of communication platform. I was expecting their websites to be more connected to their advertisers with some very simple questions: how should one place advertisements on their radio stations? How should one choose which radio stations carries the demographics an advertiser is targeting? I did not see them on Clear Channel’s website and that of Radio One. Very one directional websites. Not much flexibility nor interactivity in there.

The US public housing industry

Not even public housing websites, who have not even heard about w-e-b-s-i-t-e-s much less blogs. You would think that the new platform of communication would easily resolve their communication problems with their residents. Now, there’s some big opportunity for you bloggers or web designers!

Social Media

Imagine our world before the computers, before the internet, before the mobile phones. All we have was print media. Or if we get lucky, an annual statement about a company of who they are and what they do. Technology does wonders and each day, they bring in some new breed of communication platforms making it all easier for all of us to share and communicate information. Yes. Share and communicate – because like what Reyna Elena believes, we all are social and so should we keep social climbing alive!

Communication is two-way or multi-directional

But see, here’s the thing. Before, information about a company is one directional. Whatever they give us is what we have. Not in these age. This is what communications should be. Instant, quick, dual or multi-directional or back and forth.

And CNN is teaching businesses in leveraging technology. In fact, most radio websites should better learn a lesson from them

Government websites

Imagine if our government websites could be like that too. They have a social mission after all, service to its people and to the community. People need to know. Now.

But theirs are still mostly jurassic. And will probably stay that way.

One directional.

No flexibility.

No interaction and very slow information.

Sometimes, they’re all for show.

Sometimes, what they post is what they want us to believe.
