I don’t claim to be a journalist, nor do I claim to be a professional writer. I simply am a blogger whose hobby is to aggregate interesting celebrity and factual information across the net and post it on my blog for everyone else to enjoy.
My readers have the same interests and they do come in droves to find the latest news about their favorite celebrities, share their views, opinions and what not.
I have attached a hyperlink to the source above to let you know that I DO NOT and WILL NOT CLAIM that statement to be my own. Additionally, the same Wikipedia entry reads:
On the other hand, plagiarism is concerned with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author’s reputation that is achieved through false claims of authorship.
And why are we talking about plagiarism? Let me explain.
There was a post that I made on my blog which is a reaction to an article that I read (forwarded to me through email) from the Financial Times. I was shocked to find out that there was a chance Imelda Marcos would be reunited with her jewels after 23 years since Ferdinand Marcos was ousted from power. The history of graft and corruption by the Marcoses left our country in the state that is in today. In shambles.
While the article (FT.com / Asia-Pacific – Marcos and her gems to be reunited.) was the triggering factor to my reaction of dismay, I noted how I felt upon reading the news and how disgusted I was at the current administration for even providing the possibility or an avenue for those acquired jewels to be returned to Imelda Marcos knowing full well that the money used to acquire such precious jewels are ill-gotten and was made through corrupt and illegal means.
I provided my dissatisfaction/opinion and posted the said article VERBATIM within the post for the readers to understand why I am reacting as such, and then provided the link to the SOURCE as credit to the rightful author.
I was invited to become a guest blogger / writer at BarrioSiete.com. While speaking with one of the council members (Reyna Elena), I had shared with him the article I recently read and provided her my reactions to the news. You may not know this but I am a lurker at BarrioSiete.com. I may not post comments but I read the entries. I am proud that such a blog exists where everyone and anyone has the chance to say their peace. In fact, right in their ABOUT page, this is written:
Understand that “World Peace” is our vision and it’s important that Barrio Councilors and Barrio Council are required to work together as a team as directed by the Barrio Capitana. Our categories ranges from the usual to Parlorista. That’s our Celebrity Councilor.
The fact that their ABOUT page states the word “Parlorista” would imply to the readers that anything goes (with certain limitations of course). Yet this recent event has dimmed the nature of what THEY are about. It would have been the main reasons that sets them apart from other blogs who claim to be gods of the blogosphere yet criticize their own as if they do not and cannot belong because of such and such. You get my drift?
I told him that I posted an entry about it and he asked persmission if he could use it as my first entry for BarrioSiete.com to which I gladly obliged.
Immediately after it was published, I was told that the entry is being rejected. Now, I understand that certain individual(s) would think of copy and pasting as an act of plagiarism. To some, it may be but to others who understand the true meaning of plagiarism would read the context upon which I posted my entry would say, “Definitely not.” And why do I say that?
- I didn’t re-write the article and posted it with the “intent or representation” to claim as if the article is my own. I didn’t claim to be the author of the article or posed as such.
- Referencing an article for the readers to understand my reaction would be easier if I posted the article rather than a link that would take them away from the site to which they would comment (agree or disagree) with their reactions. It is a gesture of “convenience” for the reader and not to take away the rightful ownership of the article.
- I provided the proper link to the original post that gives proper credit to the author himself/herself.
If you use Wordpress (version 2.7.1) to blog, you may have noticed that there is a feature there where one can use the button called “PRESS THIS” while reading an article or a post on the net, when used, will immediately copy the article on your site PROVIDING the LINK to the source at the end of the post. This feature was created with the intent that one can react or republish an article but must ensure that the link posted at the bottom of the article remains intact. I use it primarily on my blog to aggregate interesting information I would like to share with my readers. From time to time, I will post a personal entry which I have solely written when prompted to do so.
The Wikipedia entry goes further to say:
It is important to reiterate that plagiarism is not the mere copying of text, but the presentation of another’s ideas as one’s own, regardless of the specific words or constructs used to express that idea. In contrast, many so-called plagiarism detection services can only detect blatant word-for-word copies of text.
It does not apply (except in the legal sense) to public-interest texts, such as social, professional, and cultural opinions usually published in newspapers and magazines.
I must admit that permission from the website owner (Financial Times) was not sought when the published item was reposted in my entry. However, my post was merely to provide convenience to the reader in order that they may respond and refer to the article fully while they state their reaction.
To receive a blatant rejection of the blog entry with the claim that “plagiarism” is the issue is an insult as I know that it is not the MAIN reason the post was rejected.
I have requested Reyna Elena to remove the post if it violates their terms but I will not FOR A SECOND believe that it was rejected due to its “copy and paste” content. It is a reaction of an intellectual elitist, who would only accept entries that are deemed to be written by and proven to be an intellectual. I would have more respect for the person who rejected the post if I had been told that my reaction, though brief and firm – was not up to their standards. That would earn my respect, not otherwise.
It is with total respect and humility that I ask Reyna Elena, a Barrio Siete Council member, to remove my post. It is an honor to be asked to write for one of the Most Influential Blogs of 2009 and I am certain that it would be a fun ride.
Nevertheless, I find it more honorable to decline such a privilege if I would not and will never be considered a part of the team in the long term as long as I don’t write BIG words and display any intellectual prowess. It really is a shame.

chuva, kung citing an article, as long as there is credit plus you added you opinion should not be plagiarism. I think.
Is the issue really plagiarism or double entries that google will penalize? But if you add 10% of your own writing, google does not think its a copy paste issue, you were simply reacting to the story.
So, it boils down to the intent of the writer and in this case the intent of the BS council. If the BS council would like all original content without citations to other sources, then it should be specified. It might not be an issue of a specific content, there is a probability that BS just wants pure unadulterated climb on the PR scale.
Just a speculation. Wag nyo po akong panain. Nakikisawsaw lang. Di ko rin alam ang puno’t dulo. Nakikireact lang po sa isyu.

Ang saya saya talaga rito sa Barrio Siete. This is what draws me here. Kahit may kaguluhan, people here tries to look at both sides to understand the issue. This is what I call “freedom”.
Hindi na importante kung sino ang naghusga na “plagiarism”. My point is, do not charge “plagiarism” when it’s not the real issue. Pero thank you sa mga nagbasa.. iaappeal natin sa barriocouncil yang suggestion na yan kasi maganda yan. yan actually ang sinasabi ni Manuel V. dati pa about disclosures when changing something in an article. Kaya mahalaga ang suggestion at comments nyo para mapaganda ang barrio.
Pero please forgive bario for that this particular flaw kasi it was the first time that reynz has to do it in the barrio kaya siguro di na rin nya na isip yung comments section. the main goal was to delete the entry as per request of the author and not to save the comments. but in the near future I think the council would consider the comments before deleting the post.
regarding the comments, I think the council has all the power to edit our comments in a way that it would not be offending to anyone. pero senseless comments are not moderated as far as I know because it consist of freedom of speech unless of course if your words are offending. these words may include but not limited to racial discriminatory words (the N word for instance), sexual vulgarity which has a bad taste of delivery (case to case basis), expletives which is not “generally” accepted in the usual tasteful conversation (the f word especially) and some other considerations that the council may deem necessary
Now about the tanod, our only responsibility as a tanod is to serve as spokesperson in behalf of the barrio when the barrio is attacked in the comments area. we dont have the power to moderate comments since its beyond our tanod functions already. suffice it to say that if one reader has rubbed elbows with another commenter, we will be the middle men, bouncer kumbaga to maintain peace. But if a certain reader/commenter will not abide with our reminders nor would respect the tanod itself then saka lang namin irerecommend sa coucnil either to moderate the comments and kung hindi na talaga kaya, block the guy or gal. Yun ang sa tingin ko ang role namin as tanod. pero never edit comments because its in the sole power of the council.
regarding this issue, both parties meant well. Its just that sometimes we have to make a decision that will be beneficial to everyone and not only to a group of people. I think this article expresses fully the freedom that one can have in barrio siete, even an article questioning about the issue inside the barrio can be expectedly published on its pages. This just shows that the Barrio gives freedom to anyone who wants it, even if they are just readers or contributors.
about the plagiarism in relation to seo chenes ng google: Mahalia is right, 10% of the article must be original. this means you can post any article you want as long as there is a source link, a 10% original entry (opinion) and that your title is not the same as the original source. Read some seo blogs about these stuff and you will find out what to and not to do when citing an article in your own blog.

It is the simple reason why Barrio Siete exists dahil kailangan ng platform ng mamamayan at hindi elitista. Each and everyone of us has a voice and this site gives way to that voice to be heard. The issues really wasn’t a plagiarism issue.
