And so, I am reviewing a lot of application letters, pati na mga resume, at kung ano anong pahambalang na employment applications for the job opening we have. Puro Managerial, except sa isang kelangan na medyo staff level. Of course, nakasaad sa advertisement namen and sukat nang mga kelangan namen kung siete pulgadas ba or what. Kung anong kulay, kung anong kintab. Alam mo yon? Eto ngayon. Dumating mga job applications. Binato saken nang HR. Leche! Napamura ako!
I know, nakasalalay saken ang futuro nang mga taong to and I should be very careful at talagang equal opportunity naman ako dahil haller! sangkatutak po kamo ang rules na kelangang sundin kundi malelechehan ka hahaha! So, ayun, dalwang araw ko nang kina-kana-kana at pina-pana-pana ang mga to. Kaya, I know, andaming humihingi nang tulong sa lola nyo on how to write application letters or how to write resume. Nakaaa! Eto, basahin ang experience ko!
1.) Me nag-apply sa Finance Manager position. Isang binder ba ang ipinadala nang gago! Ang lecheng yon! Hindi ko nga binasa! Ano ako? Miembro nang Thesis Writing Committee?!
2.) Leche ang mga na-aaply! Walang ka-alam alam magsulat nang resume. They only have like 3 qualifications, inembelish pa nang inembelish, naka tatlong page. Leche oo! Eh kahit na gawin pang tatlong nobela to, it will just be the same! Grrr!
3.) They forgot to mention their school our course. One was a Controller, but reading the resume, high school lang ang tinapos.
4.) Tinapon ko ang resume galing ki bully19@cox.net, kiver kung me MBA sya . Siya si Annette Bullinger. Bully ha? Malditang tooo!!!
5.) Binasura ko rin ang cover letter ni Damian na halos limang pages! Leche! Pakealam ko kung anong ini-enjoy nya. Hindi ako enjoy magbasa nang limang pages na cover letter.
6.) Me self-employed, lahat nang clients nya inilista ba at pinadala pa saken! Wow! Tanggal din sya.
Dati na akong nag-ha-hire nang mga tao. Kahit na noon pa. That’s why, kalimitan na mga advice ko, make your resume one page. Isa lang. As in wan, isa, saru, usa – LECHE! WAN PEYDS! WAN! GRRRR! I know, marami kang qualifications. Summa ka. Lahat nang certificate na-earn mo. Lahat nang school sa university belt, inubos mo. Pwes! Me paraan kung pano isalpak yan nang one page.
Why?
Ikaw ba naman, one vacancy, makatanggap ka nang application na lagpas 500! Anong gagawin mo kung ang timetable mo to interview is 2 or 3 days aber? Alangan namang isa-isahin mo sya!
- Kaya, it’s very important na readable ang resume.
- Gumagamet ka nang fonts na nababasa at halller! Wag mo nang lagyan nang kaartehan! Leche!
- One page resume. Did I say one page? Oo. One page. Dahil wala akong panahong basahin ang 2nd page mo.
- Organize mo. Wag mong isalpak ang education sa gitna.
- O kaya pag-hiwalayin ang lecheng responsibilities sa isang paragraph.
- At isang paragraph naman lahat nang former employers mo. Leche! Puta pinag-binggo pa ako! Hmpt!
I know, mahirap mag hanap nang work ngayon sa Amerika. So, andaming naghahanap nang work. Entry level lang na kakarampot ang responsibility, i-bombard ba naman ako nang mga resume na PhD at mga MBA. This I could understand. Ok lang, di ba?
And hindi ko maintindihan, Accounting at Finance ang hinahanap ko. Nakabalandra na Accounting and Finance ang degrees na kelangan. Ba’t andaming B.S. Mathematics? B.S. Aeronautical Engineering? B.S. Criminal Justice? B.S. Anthropology? Master in Information Technology? Wait! Meron pa! High School Diploma. Ah, ok, I know, nag-hahanap nang trabaho. Eh, gusto pala to maging accountant, eh ba’t hindi nag-sipag-enroll ang mga to nang Accounting and Finance? So, pano ko i-justify sa boss ko and Aeronautical Engineering sa Accounting kung sakali? Leche oo!
Lukring na talaga ako sa ginagawa ko. Me deadline ang mahal kong boss. Kakanaain ko na naman sya bukas para matapos ako. Waaaa!!! Gusto ko maging famous, pero hindi ganito ka-famoso ang gusto kong nakaka-receive nang mga cover letters at resume na nakakaloka!

Sa Pinas Reynz marami rin ganyan, mga Tourism grad na napupunta ay sa branch teller sa mga commercial bank rito. Yung isang pinsan ko nga tourism grad pero hayun Treasury Supervisor sa SM dahil hindi natupad ang pangarap niyang maging flight attendant..hehehe….
Minsan kasi may mga taong kumukuha ng course na hindi pa pala sila pursigido na yun talaga ang magiging career nila. ^_^

Alam mo business management ang isang degree nang pesteng ito pero after managing a few stores responsibilidad ko daw ang HR (kasi nalaman nang boss ko na may HR major at saka naman lower ang staff turnover ko kaya ayun kahit hindi ko area andun ako naka iscreen nang manga resume at interview)
Ay after 3 years naloka ako nang todo.
Lalo na kung malaman nilang Pinays ako. ayun manga gaga (hindi lady GAGA) but major GAGA na personalin ka talagang pasukin sa opis mo kahit busy ka. Sasabihing I will apply. Tapos you ask did you bring RESUME???? Ay meron peron andun sa bahay and sagot.
tapos parang haharangin ka at gustong magpahire sayo itsapwera na yung manga requirements. Para bang Pinas style na makapasuk dahil “you know me i’m pinayz too” or “my daddy is lecheng gubernator”
Tapos pa you put “email or fax resume ONLY no phone calls”. And so ayun phone calls ang matatanggap mo bwesit to the max ka talaga

this is my current experience. pag nalaman nilang pinoy ka, esp in my position right now, tipo bang, i could just haul them at bigyan agad nang posisyon sukso dya! it does not work that way – well, siguro sa mga pulitiko dito dahil ang place ko eh madugo rin ang palakasan – pero alam mo na, ang hirap atang gawin yan! hahaha

kayo nga atleat kayo ang nagrereview ng resume – eh ako, ginagawa akong recruitment agency. gusto ihanap ko sila ng work sa Qatar at paalisin ko sila papaunta dito. O diba, bongga….tapos ako pa namomoroblema sa mga resume na walang laman. san ka pa?

Hi Reynz, naku parang ganyan din ang nangyayari pag nagpapateaching demo ako sa mga aplikante para maging instructor sa college, nakakainis kasi may dalang libro sa harap, haller ano yan reporting at masyadong bookish, hirap ng trabaho mo, kulang ang maghapon para salain ang mga applicants o baka naman tinitingnan mo muna yung picture kung guwapo o hindi

true! true! siguro ang strategy nang iba say me nautical or aeronautics PhD pa to apply sa accounting job is that – either walang makuhang linya kaya apply sa accounting OR baka walang mag-apply at sila lang AT baka sakaling kunin sila which is sooooo far na mangyari.
i mean, 4 or 5 years ka sa accounting taz nag MBA ka pa, taz papasukan nang PhD in say Information System is not equivalent kahit ano pang degree meron sya. kaya ewan ko ba kung ma-a-awa ba ako or mag-mumura ako? hahaha

Haha! I could just relate. Nung nalaman ng mga paryentes and prends na I work in HR everyone was like ipasok mo naman ang lolo at lola mo sa ganito at ganun position, pati taxi drive gustong ipapasok ng tita ko sa company namin. Anubeh. Friends would bombard me with “can you do my resume please” then sabay “pakihanapan na din ako ng work”. Eh?!
I don’t mind helping and most of the time I do it pero minsan talaga sobra na.
About sa CV’s. I tell people who asks that one page is enough kasi, I too would not waste my time going through the 50th page chock full of what nots.

Oo Dee hahaha! Pag ikaw na ang nagsimulang mag-hire nang tao, that’s only then and then mai-i=intindihan mo why resume should be 1 page, why cover letter should be 1 page and why you should be direct to the point and why you should organize your resume tapos use keywords.
Kasi ang resume kasi is just a tool to separate you from the pack.
Unang arangkada kelangan mapili ang resume mo para ma-interview ka.
Eh kung unang arangkada, basura agad ang punta nang resume mo, di wala ka na sa labanan. Hahaha

Medyo natulala me dun sa nagsubmit ng cover letter 5 pages na agad. Cover letter pa lang ha. E pano na un resume proper mismo. Ilang binders ang sinumbit?
Bat un iba inilalagay pati un elementary education nila. meron naman silang college education. Relevant ba un, Reynz? If so, hala, ilalagay ko na rin kung saan me nagtapos ng kinder. Advantage din un ah. Ahahaha.

Nepotismo – palakasan system meron din dito kaya lang kahit ordinary tao ka pag may proof na biktima ka or may nakita ka, you can do something about it without being afraid of being saksak or dedbol. that is all.

I kinda understand hiring relatives and lover ones though. At least makukuntrol mo yung environment mo, lalo na kung bossing ka. Kaya lang ma ou out of control din kung pareparehong abusado. Lalo na kung maliit na business lang naman diba? Kaysa mag chance ka na makahire ng axe murderer or M–anyakis, lalong nakakatakot.

noong less than 5 years ang exp ko max 2 pages ang resume ko. Ngayon – umaabot ng 5 pages (I think umabot ng 5 pages because of 2-column format, which is taking up space and because I listed some of the projects I worked on which I think is very relevant naman to my next target job).
I should really trim it down pero atleast the first page has my Areas of Expertise in bullet points and 2 paragraphs summary of qualifications – which is a brief description of my 10 years work experience (grabe, tagal ko na pala nagtatrabaho!) – the next four pages are just details about the first pages so I guess, if they wanted to look at the first page only – andun na lahat.

Dahil, the whole idea of sending a resume is to be noticed and to be selected for interview. Walang mag-babasa nang lagpas pa nang 1st page. If by chance isa ka lang sa nag-apply, well, maswerte ka dahil punto por punto, babasahin yan. But why give out too much information eh baka di nila magustuhan ang isang linyang naisulat mo? So, wala ka na sa first base. Di ka na matawag. When in a face to face interview, mas malakas na ma-win mo sila.

Seriously, resumes should be kept short. Pero hindi naman din siguro maiiwasan ang mahabang resume if you had a lot of job experience already.
I myself had a cover letter to introduce myself and so if the cover letter impressed them, then they would go on reading my resume.
Natawa naman ako dun sa isang thesis ang pinadala? Seryoso ba yun? Baka nagsusubmit siya sa isang professor? At hindi sa isang HR? LOL…
Grabe ganun pala karami ang job applicants dyan now. So I guess hiring staffs from other countries is really a no-no as of now.

Yeah, yong isang parang report, pinadala saken. Nag-aaplay nang work. Parang presentation. Wala akong panahon magbasa.
No one is telling you to limit it to 1 page. You can create 1 book out of your resume. Problem is – me magbabasa ba?
Like me? Hanggang one page lang ako. The rest na sinulat mo, kiver. So chances are, pag ang magandang summary nasa page 10, todas ka. Di ma mapipili sa interview.

impressed ang interviewer ko, and it was the main focus of the interview. i got the job. i saved him daw lots of time for highlighting the reasons why i should be hired. o devah!

merong nahire noon sa amin, Accounting manager. Hired noong HR, confrimed ng gods sa itaas. Yong naginterview na Controller (umalis na) at dating accounting manager ay on vacation.
Ako, first week pa lang din. magkasunuran lang kami.
Nakita ko ang CV niya, impressive. whoa may mga references pa siya.
Then came the day when she’s supposed to submit to me the financials for the board meeting.
First, she asked not to be disturbed. she was on phone for hours.
in the afternoon, i followed up. She said, she’s not done yet.
The second follow-up, she said that she ‘s going to submit it direct to the board.
I smiled, no notes? no analysis? these members of the board do not look at figures or the graphs. they do not understand the figures, what they read are the explanations why there is a change in revenue, why the expenses have gone up…blah blah. she’s bypassing ME. no siya sinuswerte?
came the day when it is deadline. She was not in the office yet. so i took it to myself to see what she had done.
Putragis, nakakalat lang ang financials of the previous periods…
To cut the story short, tanggal siya and i have to work overnight to finish the whole package.
yon pala ang gaga, nakakuha lang ng accounting na short tems course aka 6 months (meron dito noon), yong mga dating niyang trabaho na payable clerk, receivable clerk, pinalitan ng mga manager title.
Ang putragis, tapos lang pala ng online ministry tapos kumuha ng mga telepono ng kaibigan, kinausap para pag tumawag sa references, sabihing ganoon nga siya, blah blah blah.

Actually gurl, depende yan sa field. Noon, my resume was 5 to 6 pages long. Tapos, when I was last laid off, the placement trainor told us to cut it down to 1 page which I did. Leche ever, after kong ipadala, waz response. Yun pala, pag IT position, hinahanap nila lahat ng details ng work including projects worked on, responsibilities and technologies used dahil yung isang recruiter, hiningi yung detailed resume ko. So balik ulit ang lola mo sa 5 to 6 pages. O diva, tawagan sila ng tawagan at interview ever ever.
Thank God, I have not been in this position again for the last 5 years. Pahaba na talaga ng kuko para sabit ever sa job dahil kahirap maghanap ng work ngayon, no. dati nun, you can embellish dahil there is no way or it’s tough to find the true numbers (dito sa US – am not talking about sa Pinas kasi di ko alam). now, they will ask you about your last salary. and you better answer correctly dahil WE can find out HAHAHA to us here, it’s not invasive. typical lang. pero done during the interview at hindi sa lobby you know.

gurl,
we have so many consultants from orlando and the miami areas. they work here in new orleans and go home on the weekends. there are so many work available here in new orleans, kaso nga daming mga engkanto kaya ayaw nang mga tao hahaha
anyway, regarding the accounting graduate. i finished my undegrad – accounting degree sa legazpi city – that i call probinsya.
what i did is send my transcript of records sa department of education nang state of pennsylvania. nung nakita nilang ang ganda ko talaga, i did not have any problem nor have to retake any classes dahil nga maganda ako.
the only thing i did when i went to Temple University was take the TOEFL kahit na haller mas magaling pa kamo akong mag-english dun sa nag interview saken sa school hahahah eh kasi nga english talaga kami sa barrio hahaha but TOEFL is just for formalities dahil requirement talaga sya
then, i deretso na akong nag-MBA. after that, wala nang requirements when i went to GWU.
so, my advice is this, get in touch with Florida’s Department of Education, and ask them how.

hahahaha tama ka dyan walang gusto magbasa ng storya ng buhay mo lalo na ang kumpanyang inaaplayan mo at di porke marami kang napasukang trabaho na taon taon e nagpapalit ka kala nila e very impressive na sila.
wala, masisiyahan ka sa CV ko hahaha kasi yung pinakalast na educational attainment e gusto ko mang lagyan wala akong mailagay dahil wala naman talaga hahahaha.
2 pages ang CV ko, claro at wlang maraming ek ek.
pero malaki ang picture sa itaas hahahahaha.

kahit anong ganda nang resume pag libro walang magbabasa, kasi nga pare parehas so ang tendency mo maghanap lang nang keyword.

nice blog! nakakatawa lang… depende rin siguro kasi iba ang experience ko.
kasi ako, matino naman ang pagkakasulat ko ng resume ko gaya ng sinaad mo sa itaas. ang hindi ko lang lubos na maintindihan ay kung baket sa 2.5 yrs kong nagtatrabaho ay taliwas ang experience ko sa kung ano ang tinapos ko… 2.5 yrs akong nasa i.t./ece field samantalang philosophy ang natapos ko… naisip ko na rin na gawa siguro ng mga exam exam na yan… na naghahahire pa sila ng mga psychometrician o mga psych graduates para ievaluate ang kakayahan ng mga empleyado (desperado akong makapasok ng hr work dati) pero di pa rin nila ako nahahire ng tama… hahaha. intrimitida din ang nanay ko sa pagsasabing, “pasalamat ka at may trabaho ka”… pero leche pa rin!
minsan naisip ko na tanggapin na lang mapait na kapalaran at pano kung mag enroll na lang ako ng second course na i.t. para matahimik na ang buhay ko. kaya nagtesting ako, pumasa, at naisipan naman na baka i.t. o eng related ang landas ko… pagdating sa assessment, te, di daw ako pwede kasi di naman technical yung pinanggalingan ko… san ka pa… sabi ko naman, “sir, need ko po yugn course na yan to compensate for my work experiences.” at sa sarili ko habang iniimagine na kausap ko yung boplats na dean, “tingin ko mas marami pa akong alam sa i.t. kesa sa mga summa niyo.”
isumpa na lahat ng bpo companies dito sa pinas dahil panira ng resume. in fairness, kung walang bpo, karamihan ng mga grad dito sa pinas e walang trabaho. ang galing pa nila mang uto ng mga bagong grad at mga hindi grad.
anyway, leche yang mga test na at leche rin yung mga kumpanya na “course-sists” and “schoolists” if ever there is such a term dahil hindi naman mamemeasure ng isang papel ang abilidad ng mga tao. good thing na ngayong nasa 3rd year ko ng pakikipagsapalaran sa trabaho e nasa hr na ako at good thing rin na halos kaedad ko lahat ng mga bagong grad (18 kasi ako grumad) kaya kaya ko pang humabol at, somehow, may edge ako. pero kung papipiliin ako, sana nakapag simula ako ng maaga.

dito sa pinas, since hr na ako, although marami ngang trabaho na dito gawa ng mga migrations ng mga kumpanya, nakakalungkot lang na isipin na para magkaroon ng maraming trabaho dito ay kelangan maraming tao sa kabilang dako ng mundo ang mawalan ng trabaho.

…parang kasi sa kabila (us/canada ang hawak ko) nagpoprocess ako ng mga termination papers, pay-go, clearance, etc… samantalang dito sa kabila, mass hiring, b.i., interview naman ako (sakit sa ulong generalist pero keribels naman). minsan nung pinadala yugn sup ko sa u.s., kwento niya nung nitrain siya na may nagtanong daw na puti, “what will happen to us if they take their jobs?” ang sagot lang daw nung facilitator, “you will have otehr job roles” pero wala naman silang maibigay na specific na job role pos in a few months time, pinoprocess na namin yung termination papers nila… yun rin ang masaklap sa hr… you see people come and go.
