Are you serious with your apology Carlo Ople?! I was very hesitant to accept your apology given the nasty experience I have with a double-faced Manila blogger. What I have just read on the Philippine Daily Inquirer seem to validate my perception amongst certain group or individual who are Manila bloggers who don’t have FALAVRA DE ONOR?! You know what’s worse? Considering that I am from the outside looking in, I seem to get the feeling that some bloggers are using Patay Gutom Bloggers for their own fame and fortune and then stab them from the behind. Is this a fair assessment? Am I right? Am I wrong? Tell me! For one thing, I believe that you should be happy, that the real DEAN in Cat, had accepted your apology. That was one FALAVRATIC HONORIFIC. The sad truth was we all believed when he said he would take out the word PGB from his post. The naive me actually admired him when he asked for an apology to Reynz and Cat.

Why don’t we leave comments in the inquirer blog? Baka kasi hindi alam ng inquirer kung ano ang ibig sabihin ng PGB dahil hindi naman na-define yong acronym. Isnt this term, PGB (term meant for patay gutom bloggers) which started a chain of reactions from the blogosphere?
I thought this patay gutom term-slash-PGB has been removed since it really sounds offensive nga.

How can one go to media and offer its views without checking potential flaws? Like the use of PG term… and re-use it again in another form?
‘Di ba Reynz, for example like you… may field of expertise ka di ba?
What contributes more to you in such greater skills?
1. Years of experience in the practice?
2. Or your academic embellishments?
I know both are great factor. If you got real experience with many years invested, you are already part of the trend/evolution. Academics (like PhD, MBA, MA) comes next for peership purposes. Combining both is the ultimate credential!
I wonder what’s with the 3 months, 10 months, 7 months, 1 year with this Carlo’s resume and he goes out and evangelize marketing like a Martin Lindstrom of the Philippines?
His style seems to be a new religion with a false prophet proclaiming big time that the second coming has a final date and the holy grail is just around the corner, if you would listen to his marketing ideas blindly… hah! Is that the case, Carlo?
If you will attend an international marketing convention, you got a good chance to be eaten alive by other marketing people who can easily spot your novice ways. Believe me, there are more cruel, skeptic, discerning people outside, other than us… take this as an opportunity to make amends.
How about an erratum as your redemption?

I’m not being uber sensitive, pero to be typecasted as a PGB is ibang klaseng insulto. i don’t care if the (PGB) term is intended to warn the marketers, the point is PG or NOT, lahat tayo may karapatan mag blog at may karapatan makatikim ng free meal at bag hahaha. Ang sa akin lang, equal opportunity. Yun mga so-called PGBs, pinaghihirapan din naman nila yung mga posts nila, nagbabayad din yan ng internet connection at nag s-spend ng time para gumawa ng entry. If they receive invites in some media events, good for them, it will be a great opportunity for them to grow. I agree, they will not be beneficial to the Marketers, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to call them as PGBs. Besides, ganun ba katatanga ang mga Ad agencies to invite 10% lang of “non-PGBs” in a particular event? I don’t think so.
sabi ko na nga ba, yung hilatsa ng mukhang yun eh hinde masyadong mapagkakatiwalaan hahaha. ang matapobre, kahit nakangiti sa avatar eh matapobre pa din whahahha, anybody can say sorry, pero not everyone can be sincere.
gusto kong marinig ang explanation nya, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, baka kase may bago na syang meaning sa PGB harharhar, hintayin naten ang rebuttal, it’d better be good and acceptable.

Hi guys, honest mistake when we were editing the article. As most of you know initially there was an entire section dedicated to it but it’s no longer there. It was just one instance that was overlooked but its now edited.
Basically we thought that there were no mentions of the term anymore but we missed that one sentence. ><;
Yes, I was very serious with the apology RE. I took out the term in spite of several friends and readers asking me not to.
There was really just an slip-up with the editing. I believe the editors in the Blog Addicts post already fixed it. We’ll also correct the initial article on the new media philippines blog as well.

i don’t who this Carlo Ople is. I hope wala syang relation dun ki Blas Ople who we know is probably one of the good senators we had.
but i am beginning to believe na baguhan lang ang blogger na to who is trying his best to social climb kaso he fumbles and fumbles bad with no knowledge of what’s politically correct and what’s not.
i also believe that this blogger is probably hanging out with the wrong people kaya napi-pickup mga NEGATIVE ENERGIES kaya he is now looking as fool as ever.
i honestly believe that ELITIST BLOGGERS exists and it’s disappointing because at a point where you would think that they would be at the forefront of what we want like CHANGE, sila pa tong promotor nang Illustrado/Indio mentality under the pretext na kelangan there has to be certain silos where you can simply categorize people like this and like that.
wala akong issue categorizing people for product marketing or target demographics but the labelling has come to a point na masyadong mal-edukado.

@Johnonymous: That’s why I choose to come back here bro, it’s because I was really serious with what I said when I apologized. I mean, despite the stinging words and personal attacks, I’ll bare all of that just to prove that point that I was really serious when I said sorry.
I know that I can’t satisfy everyone with an explanation, especially since this is a very sensitive topic, but I’ll never hesitate to acknowledge if I made a mistake and apologize. Again, that’s the reason why I went directly to Cat and RE when I heard that they were offended with the initial post. If in the future I make a mistake again, and anyone corrects me, I’ll own up to it, explain, apologize, and thank the critic for making me a better person/writer/blogger.
I’m did not apologize back then just to be “politically correct”, I apologized because it was the right thing to do. This was an honest mistake because we literally overlooked that one instance of the term being mentioned in the article.
@RE: Other than apologizing endlessly, let me change the tone a bit and thank you for pointing this out so we could make the necessary changes/corrections.

Sincerity in apology is a moral virtue. A virtue is a character trait or quality valued as being good. So if you are sincere, you are good.
But sincerity in the apology may just be a mere construct. What is the difference between a virtue and a construct?
Sincerity is when you talk about your own feelings; how sorry you are for the wrongs that have been done.
A construct is a mere reaction after the evaluation of the behavior. Just like a small child who anticipates that punishment will continue until he promises to change or behave, some adults are quick to apologize to avoid further humiliation. The excuse is always “they want to move on.” “ So sorry na. hindi na sila uulit. Forget the past na. Now na.
I can live with both. One is a virtue and other one is an ideal. Give them some more time and hope that they will learn that ideal may evolve to virtue.
But I can tell you ladies, stupidity starts also with S. I do not want to elaborate anymore.
Next time they apologize, they should switch off from microblogging, refrain from commenting further on related issues and do not send the same article to a broadsheet with the controversial word even though it is in acronym.

Hi C at, you wrote that comment well. I’m in the process of writing another article (based from John’s suggestion). Hopefully it can address this issue once and for all and at least mend some wounds that were made on both sides.
Let me stress though that I did not use the term (even in acronym form) in the post. If you check the current post at New Media Philippines, it is still there. It was a mention that I overlooked when I edited, and when I sent it to Inquirer, it was still there.
Like what I said earlier, I know this won’t be enough for a lot of people, but I will make the effort to connect and explain because I owe that much to everyone since it was really a mistake on our part in the process of cleaning up the article.

I could see that Carlo Ople TECHNICALLY did not repeat “Patay-Gutom Blogger” phrase into writing, but instead he made this into ACRONYM…
Speaking to Carlo frankly, as a friendly advise… you should not use such term and whatever words that fall on the same meaning… Man, get your attitude right on this matter… I can understand your frustration seeing people just for the freebies in a certain event, but that’s the concept of giving (it’s gifting, not a paid task)… but I think it’s cruel and unfair to describe them as ‘patay gutom’ or bottom feeders…
Your article in Inquirer sounds like a PR tactic as described by some — “call for action”. If you’re calling for positive action, you better be in a moral high ground! No PGB’s please lang…
I got a feeling that the said article is based on Carlo’s experience as a brand steward — rounding up the bloggers, making an event, providing freebies and expect brand visibility though bloggers’ writing… this is really cheap shot!
Carlo, perhaps if he was involved to a flop bloggers’ event, could have given freebies. Then tell bloggers that they will be paid in another occasion accordingly — depending on how the blogger made it popular… Pay-per-visit or pay-per-click, statistics… draft the contract and get those bloggers work for him… I think that would appear to be professional and motivating to the bloggers you tapped…
I really got a strong feeling about that Inquirer article is about Carlo’s past mistake and blamed out 90% of bloggers as PG.
We are not perfect. We have our UP and DOWN moments… We get ‘hungry’ at times (not just for food or material gains) but in many aspects of our individual existence… you might have your ‘hungry’ moments soon, be reminded…
People like freebies, don’t expect measured returns. If you offer gifts, don’t expect equal gains… change your marketing plans if you can’t be generous enough or if you have budget constraints…
Most of cases in marketing success, it’s not given by the books or academics. Success is mainly driven by attitude on certain deliverables…

@carlo – Since you speak of an honest mistake, believe me, I believe you on this one. How do you explain the process in which you chose the finalist on the last Level-Up! Gaming blog awards category? Was including blogs with 3 posts and not even a month old in the list of finalist compared to our 10 year old website/blog an honest mistake too?
I’ve been silent for all these months, but since Reyna Elena has brought this topic back, I’ll ask you now, why were there no explanations during those times? Even after the event itself, you’re all quiet like an Australian marsupial.

I know I should be annoyed with some of the comments and insults but I’ll take it in with stride because this is my mistake, not yours. All I can do is to really apologize and try to rectify the mistake. I hope the post finally lets us move on from this issue, because I personally want to move on. So, again, I humbly apologize to all those affected and thank you for making me a better writer/blogger/person by pointing out my mistakes.

I read his original entry. I don’t think the whole thing changed. It seemed to me that he’s defending yong pagkakamali nya and justifying it just because it started from somebody else. That does not validate anything. It’s still the same. Therefore ang may I conclude ko is that : NONE.

For me, the fact that Carlo forgot to remove all references to the offending term is just an honest mistake. The saying, “never attribute to malice what can be explained by more benign reasons” is particularly apt here. I don’t think Carlo intended any malice here.

In the first place, who in their right conscience would say or write an offensive word such as “Patay Gutom” in the first place?
Once does not need to be called out nor be reminded that the term is offensive. It’s like calling someone “puta”, “hayop ka”, “siraulo”, “hampas lupa”. It’s demeaning. Period. It wasn’t just a slip of the tongue (or keyboard), it was meant.
By labeling the entry as “a helpful advise to marketers”, it was basically implying that companies should only give gifts to the elite group and not the unknown bloggers. Typical Filipino crab mentality. I believe everyone started out as “unknown bloggers” with some growing to become popular. The popular ones like him might just be afraid they’d be surpassed by these PGBs in the future.

So I was able to read Carlo Ople’s blog on INquirer. And it sickens me. I left a message, I don’t know if they publish it (sans the grammar -LOL). So I am copying and pasting the same after the following paragraph.
Its sickening to see people talk and think like they’re the authority on the subject. I think its a stupid idea to label bloggers – blogging is just child’s play – these guys want to impose standards (and censorships) on blogging? They’re stupid.

It’s funny to see people who try in vain portraying themselves as experts on things like, blogging…
Then they start name calling, branding, and look down on other bloggers just because they don’t fit to their idea of what blogging is all about.
To tell you frankly, blogging is nothing. It’s just a hobby, its a journal, it can give a patay gutom some money to buy food, its not just for people who writes english well, and it’s not just for people who are associated with big names, politicians, marketers. In other words – blogging is just a means for individuals to express themselves online – for whatever purpose, noble or not – who cares? and who wants to classify them? who wants to censor them?
They Who try to impose their authority and judgments on bloggers are just plain – stupids…
