Charlene goes to Harvard
While reading today’s online papers, I ran across this news about Charlene Gonzalez schooling at the Harvard University in the United States. I have no problem whatsoever with Charlene’s dream of going to Harvard. Personal yon and I respect them for that. Although one can get Business Entrepreneurial classes sa UP, Ateneo or even at the Asian Institute of Management and I’m sure meron sila nyan. Purbida gyud kung wala sila nun. So, I said, “wow!” But as I read the article, I noticed something which to me does not sound right. Something’s weird. Here were the keywords that I was curious:
- taking up a Business Management Entrepreneurship short course
- getting accepted at the prestigious university
- pagbukas niya ng email niya she got accepted sa Harvard
- to pursue the month-long course
- to study at Harvard
- for a fairly long period
Well, TEKA LANG! Hahaha!
Let’s get rid of the easy ones. “month-long” is 30/31 days and “fairly long period” as in, huh?! Nakikiliti ang bola ko nitong fairy long period ha?! Fine. Hahaha! Pati one month was embellished! Hehehe!
Getting accepted
Even the sound of “getting accepted” was fancy. It did not say kasi sa news kung anong requirement chorva. Me GMAT ba? TOEFL? Entrance exams? Kelangan ba nang laminated diploma? Cedula? Voter’s ID? Pano?! It seemed to me, by reading the article, na merong heavy equipment requirements bago ma-accept. Am sure, pag Harvard, heavy ang US dollars. But the tone was different! The news sounded like there was some heavy chorva ever to get into this course! Hahaha!
Taking up a Business Management Entrepreneurship short course
Then it goes to “taking up a Business Management Entrepreneurship short course”. Well, Pwede naman di ba? There are a lot of courses around. Me one-minute to 20 years. So, it’s really possible to have a one-month course. Kaso “course” was misleading to me. Degree ba to? Or non-degree. It did not even say kung leading to “credits” para ma-justify ang “studying”.
Readers are not abno
The article written by ABS-CBN was misleading and is giving the public some wrong impression about getting to Harvard. You have to understand na me mga Pinoy here in America who are not abno about getting “accepted” at some “prestigious” universities. Am sure even back home, meron. Getz?!
Seminar
It would have been more meaningful to the readers had ABS-CBN put a link to the particular course at the Harvard University website para if they don’t know how to write an article properly, we (the readers) are able to digest it upon us na lang. Why? Because I could easily claim that this is not a course leading to a degree, rather nothing more than a seminar.
My point?
The real crux of what I’m talking about is that, is this: typically ganito ang ibang mga Pinoy who would embellish and creatively broadcast and write on their resumes things like these. Over-bloated, uber ever and embellishment to the max to the point na ginagago ang Pinoy public. Some of the contents of the resume are so over-ballistically embellished masabi lang na napunta sila nang isang university sa Amerika or ibang bansa. It’s also the same as, do you really need an MBA at say, Ateneo to open an Ukay-ukay business?! Well, I guess. Right?
Note: This is just an introduction to what you will be reading soon.

I know right?
Mahirap pumasok if your credentials are not qualified. Pero with University Grads (ADMU, DLSU, UST and UP) tapos maganda pa grades, madali naman pumasok, madami nga lang extra credits, requirements, credentials at tipong added curriculum from some us based schools etc.

I have seen Charlene during her Binibining Pilipinas days, hanggang sa Miss Universe days nya. I have also read a few of the articles she wrote in the past – mga ala Martha Stewart ang topic bah… Sa personal na assessment ko (na of course di ko kayang i substantiate) tingin ko lang matalino sha. I wish her all the best.

Tinanong ako kung Harvard school of entrepreneurship? wala akong makitang short term course. the shortest is two years.
Baka seminar kamo?
Well seminars in Harvard cost around US 6,30o but the longest seminar is 5 days.
chineck ko rin ang Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship- Harvard Business School, wala akong makitang scheduled short term course for may about entrepreneurship o nakalimutan nilang i-update ang kanilang website?
maloloko ako.
Problem with these celebrities pag medyo bagsak ang kanilang popularity, punta kuno sila sa States ay mag-aral as if studying in the US is that easy considering getting the student visa these days ay hindi madali after the 9-11.
I admire Charlene, she is one of the decent actresses i know and intelligent too. she does not need this kind of publicity where public is made to believe that she is really going back to school.

They do not call the seminars–seminars.. they call them programme because they’re given in module forms to be included in the degree or diploma offerings.
Acceptance for leadership training programs have criteria who should apply.
for different programs.
i am really wondering if there is such as short term course. For a short term course, it should at least last for two months.intro to entrprenuership , itself is already a course for a semester.
The advisory among international attendees says that visa may take
longer time to get .
who applies for a student visa:
Those who are attending even just a seminar which is more than 18 houts per week.
a tourist can attend if it is less than 18 houra per week.
if she is a citizen, she could easily fly as the writer claimed.

Totoo yun.
PUP has the lowest tuition fee in the Philippines. 12 pesos lang per unit.
So if you have 5,000 pesos, that’s enough tuition fee for you to enroll in a course – for full 4 years. Murang mura. Abot kaya.

I can’t understand why Charlene G should go to Harvard. She should go to AIM, a lot of super successful Asian business people went there — it has a highly reputed fellowship. She should be with her family at the same time enroll to any fine, local business school.
It does not connect to me well — going Harvard and only for a month? What will you get for a month?
Or, maybe there’s a new business school somewhere in Harvard St., Cubao? Maybe there was some ‘error’ in the press release…

hi renz, i read that article online too, as usual, i just skimmed it and didn’t give it much thought, the only points that register was that she was going to harvard for a “long” time, so natawa ako when i read your blog it was just a one-month course pala.
personally, i think charlene has nothing to do with this publicity, remember, she didn’t even dignify the comments of kris aquino when the latter said something to the effect na “pa soshyal sia” when she wore a different shade of gown in one function.
most probably it’s the job of those publicity hungry PR (what an oxymoron, of course, being in the PR they are publicity hungry, he he) who in his haste to publish a newsworthy article, forgot to check it for inconsistencies

Look at Katrina Halili, may usapan ata sila ni Hayden na i-deny ang issue about them. In the end nilaglag si Katrina ni Hayden kaya masama ng loob ni Katrina
Tapos si Hans Montenegro before, he’s denying na sya yong nasa video ni jojo veloso tapos noong nag showbiz comeback, he admitted it. One time may show sa TV wherein binigyan ng task ang mga artista. One task is to convince an artista friend na sabihin sa press na magkasama sila at a certain time and place kasi nga may isang issue na gustong i-deny.
That is their world – world of intriga, gimmick, publicity, denial….Siguro 70% ng mga artista news hindi totoo. So si Charlene baka may ibang purpose ang trip na di pwedeng sabihin sa public or baka nga nag-seminar for 3 to 5 days tapos the rest is for other purpose.

Reyns,
I read this article and it raised my brows too. Cats have brows you know.just like
when I read an article that a popular singer is not just singing in a nursing home receiving 35 dollars per hour. yong balita ay parang kinarir niya ang pagkanta sa NURSING HOME? sus ginoo, hahabulin siya ng mga matatanda na nasa wheel chair niyan.
There are activities for the nursing home residents which include entertainment but these are done on a volunteer basis and it is only good for an hour. Mostly activities are those which appeal to sight and not to the ears. kasi karamihan sa kanila at hearing impaired na.
What these people do not realize is that were are already in the age www where the news from all sides of the world can be accesses with just mere clicking of the mouse.

I now can see your point. It is not about Charlene. Precisely, I agree with you, why go to the US for an entrepreneurship education when business environments discussed are different from that of the Philippines?
Say for example the ukay-ukay business.
Here, the ukay-ukay or second hand items are not that popular because your competitiors are the biggest non-profit Goodwill and Salvation Army which get their supplies for free from donations of deceased, from those who would like to get rid of their attics and closets and those brandnew items which have defects.
They provide employment to newly-arrived immigrants and to their other charitable programs.
Whatever they get from those donation boxes are sorted in their big warehouses.
they chose whatever will sell in their branches and sell in bulk to enterprising people who export these to third world countries.

Eggsaktimo. I’m not saying though that Harvard is not in a position to hold “Ukay Ukay”Entrepreneurship Classes (kung ukay ukay man an pupuntahan nya hahaha), for any other US school are also able to address key strategic theories on issues around “ukay-ukay” kung kinakailangan pang i-adress and “heavy” issues na to hehehe. As you’ve pointed out, they’ve been around in the US for a long time. This is just one “phenonomenon” (wrong choice of word pa siguro ako – but sorta) in the Philippines that went big. Rather, I believe that “ukay-ukay” could far better and effectively taught on a more localized basis as in back in the Philippines for they have the touch and feel, if you know what I mean. I’d say, mas specialized na ang knowledge nang mga tiga Pinas on local entrepreneurship, ba’t pa US.
But it’s a personal choice on Aga’s and Charlene’s part – that we cannot argue. Hands off. Which is obvious that they’re really after the name “Harvard”, which again is upon them, kevz, kaso the meat of it all is something funkilicious. Paturo na lang sila ki Aling Unding.

Nahuli ako sa klase!!! Shucks!
Ang alam kong shortest courses sa Harvard are two years or dun sa summer school (kaso pang bagets etech ata – para sa highschool guys and gals – which requires 5-8 weeks to finish – parang prep lang to college)
Parang napakaimpossible naman na si Charlene is going to the summer school. And knowing Harvard? that’s more than the prestigious school’s here combined!! Nabasa ko sa isang article that Charlene had a degree in Psychology and took up a one-on-one mentorship program sa AIM. Nothing wrong there. Its the article that made me doubt so much about the details.
Something is wrong with the article. Harvard is one of the stringiest universities lalo na pagdating sa application, requirements at admission. And then short course on Business Management Entrepreneurship? In just one month?? That’s crazy. You cant learn all the business stuff in a month – kulang pa nga ang 4 years eh.
However, I do not doubt Charlene’s abilities pero I doubt the details in the article.
Check nyo itong article na ito na I have found. Its an article about a Filipino who studied at Harvard, this time, sa Harvard Law School. Kalurkey ang taong ito.
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/45413/Young-Filipino-lawyer-addresses-Harvard-law-grads
It discusses about Filipinos na nakapag-aral sa Harvard Business School..

Harvard Business School under their executive education program (open enrollment) offers short courses that could take up to 4/5 weeks with a few days break in the middle.
for example; Business Strategy: building and sustaining competitive advantage COST 12,000
she may need it because it is so competitive in Manila Showbiz., yah know getting older and all…. hehehehehe
courses require no formal education and only requiring you to satisfy the selection criteria ie achievements and responsibility blah blah. she was allegedly a supermodel and a real Miss Universe runner up.
they donot count towards any degree credit, she will receive a certificate of participation tagged Harvard Bizness Skool after 5 weeks.

hello!!
anyways, I have nothing against Charlene, and she is really a fine woman.
but the way the media tells this to public, it seems to me that it is unlikely for Filipinos to be accepted to such prestigious schools. It is wrong…
they put too much glamour to their articles (which adds more publicity) that it makes an average person or some one lower think that it is unattainable.
WTF! Do they think that the people watching the news and reading papers that stupid? haizttt

basta ang alam ko, nanalaytay pa rin ang dugo ng mga prayle at pinaglalaruan ang mga mahihirap dahil ayaw nilang tanggapin na globalization na akala nila sila lang meron internet para mag research, marami na rin akong na research at nalaman sa buong mundo, aba eh pwede ko na ring idekclare na marami akong pinuntahan na seminar dito sa US but I will not kalat wrong information sa mga kababayan ko dahil ang katotohanan eh ang mga Pilipino ayaw tanggapin ang katotohanan, hindi tayo claro sa mga statements natin, kaya walang pag-unlad. my friend have just attended a seminar for 4 days in Atlanta Georgia where she spent at least $3,000.00, seminar fee $700, plane tix $1,200, $700.00 hotel, plus nfood, boboisky ako sa matiks so im sure she spent more =seminar is about financial lectures relating to insurance she sells insurance in the Phils, the other lady who was with her sells insurance to showbiz personalities and people in the higher financial bracket jan sa Pinas kaya mas marami siyang bonus

sa kayang sikap at tiyaga eh marami na silang napuntahan na bansa pati sa Beijing Olympics, daig pa niya ako dahil napanood niya yong US Dream and Redeem basketball players. there are different ways to make money as long as na malinis at walang ginagago, not like the Ponzi scheme. the other advantage of attending the seminars here in the US, aba eh nakuhanan na niya ng visa ang mga chikiting niya, unfortunately wala silang kamag-anak na nagpetisyon sa kanila to come here to US, so gawa siya ng paraan to at least makatapak dito sa US and I’m very happy na they got a visa

Hi! nabasa ko rin ang news na yan, and i was surprised na ganon ba kadali maadmit sa harvard, dito sa germany, there are lot of requirements and it takes month bago nila inapprove ang application ko at ang madugong requirements, sa MBA kailangan business related ang natapos at di lang yon, kailangan finish ka rin ng isang masteral course sa pinas, just like malen and silver, I’m proud na graduate rin ako ng PUP, di talaga hadlang ang poverty sa success, they know ang hirap kung paano maadmit sa state university, at alam kong when you took your graduate studies sangkaterba din ang requirements, siguro nga seminar lang yung kay charlene pero smart at talented siya talaga.

Hindi ba if you applied for a short course, the only hindrance for you to get in is the cost? There are no need for transcripts and letters of recommendation, as opposed to getting in into the university for collegiate studies. Its an open admission daw eh, according to the site.
So its really no biggie, except that she’s a high profile showbiz personality pursuing additional academic credits. Something we don’t really see everyday.
Nakakainis lang kasi they’re sensationalizing it.

nothing wrong wanting to feel the walls of Harvard. But I’d have admired her more if walang publicity. Goes to show how they want to remain in the public’s radar. any publicity will do including trying to impress the public. whether or not accurate yong report, nasa may katawan yon whether she wants to downplay or make it a big deal.
in my work experience, i have seen my fair share of expert’s CV. normally those who want to prove more, have longer CVs, those who have nothing more to prove, shorter. there was this international academic conference i attended last year, yong keynote speaker had the shortest CV, shortest presentation, and the least fancy powerpoint. but he was the one i most understood. sa totoo lang, sakit lang ng ulo napala ko don sa conference na yon. wala ako naintindihan halos.
puwede ko ihalintulad din sa pagba-bloghopping ko, the more the blog sounds intellectual, the more na di ko magetz. kaya aliw ako dito sa kaharian ng barrio siete queen elena eh, mas may naiintindihan pa ako.

I think that with prestigious universities like Harvard, they don’t just email you and tell you that you’re accepted; you get a letter of acceptance in the mail. I know pa nga na when they email you, it means that you are NOT accepted in most cases. Saka one month course only? Then why go all the way there to get such course? Pwede naman dito sa Manila.
You are right about the requirements. TOEFL and GMAT are required, unless Ms. Charlene had already been to an American school before, which is highly unlikely.
I hate to say this pero they make it seem like applying to Harvard is so simple, when in reality it is not.
Tsk tsk.

Um, “Fairly Long Period” referred to the time she’ll be away from her fam… Give her a break naman po, she’s a mom, and a month away from the family IS fairly long. Heck, a week is already pretty long na nga. Mercy lang, mga dudes. It wasn’t in reference to her Harvard thing kasi, it was in reference to the time she’ll take away from her family.
