Admiration for China
Who would not have an admiration for China? With their ancient civilization that continues to awe everyone of us to their meteoric rise as one global economic power capable of dictating our food on the table. One thing I like from them is how effective their anti-corruption is. They hang them. Sure it’s still a problem but they have a strategy that works. Us? Fk that shit. We got nuttin’. Poverty is another area where they continue to do wonders. It’s still a problem, but they continue to work very hard on it. Us? Fk that shit. Our politicians need poverty and squatters for their election campaign. Whereas China is moving on with modern society. Up there for the world to see and admire.
Barbarians
WAIT! Admire?! Have they really changed for the better? As one of the world’s role model? Or they continue to be bloody, ugly barbarians?
The xenophobic writer
Chip Tsao is a best-selling author and columnist. He is a former reporter for the BBC and his columns have also appeared in Apple Daily, Next Magazine and CUP Magazine, among others. For a respected columnist in China to write a stinging, xenophobic and hateful comment for Overseas Filipino Workers is beyond me. This is what he wrote:
Spare the Russians and the Japanese
The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.
But not Filipinos
But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.
Luisa, OFW, International politics degree
As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.
Fomenting hatred on Overseas Filipino Workers
Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.
China as Britain, Philippines as Argentina, Spratlys as Fakland Islands
Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.
I blame our never-ending, in-your-face government corruption
Look, Borneo Sabah was even sucked up by Malaysia and included in their Federation! Spratlys?! No matter where my country fight for ownership of these islands that really belongs to the Philippines, they’re not being fought in any United Nations roundtable or World Court. Who they gonna fool?! Moi? Ah-ah! Spratly’s will be sucked up by China. I even read that parts of those were even “sold”.
Weak nations are always vulnerable
For as long as these people in our government do not clean up themselves, make the Philippines a stronger nation and make our nation and its people the priority, we will forever be belittled, insulted, hated and our islands grabbed one by one. These 800-pound gorillas out there typically pry the weaker ones and fry them.
Hang this guy. Give him hugs and kisses! Castrate him.
I don’t condone the barbaric remark of this asshole Chinese columnist who claims to have some BBC sparkles, who is promoting and fomenting hatred amongst Filipinos and Overseas Filipino Workers. I really would like to give this bloody asshole some seriously umpht hugs and kisses!!!
Let’s just suck it up!
So my fellow Pinoys and Overseas Pinoys?! Altogether now! Let’s just suck up this ugly and xenophobic Chinese remarks and continue cleaning their fucking toilets, save the water and use it to cook for their food.

Teka, teka, let me have him!!! Hahhaha….
If China want this f*cking pieces of rocks scattered on South China sea, then let this matter be settled on United Nations or any global governing body. Not everything in South China sea is purely theirs. That is so f*cking arrogant and egoistical.
What’s wrong working with domestic household work? At least, we (most of us), Filipinos, despite the irregularities in our f*cking government are trying to earn a living in an honest way. We are not like some f*cking chinese guy who would write something atrocious like this or some other chinese guy, involved in slavery, corruption and drug trade.
Wanna trade bombs with Filipinos (OFWs and bloggers alike), Chip Tsao? Be prepared. Because the Philippines is not a nation of slaves and maids. We, too, are a proud race like your Chinese guys. But insulting our people, I wont forgive it. Calling yourself patriotic? Bullshit.
Mudra..
Pero sa totoo lang, corrupt man ang ating government pero this does not give license to that Chip Tsao to berate or belittle us.

Darn right! And what I am afraid of is that, with billions of Chinese and OFW’s working in China, Hongkong and Macau, and with all the unreported atrocities of Chinese employers, this bloody barbarian is just fomenting another round of hatred against Filipinos.
We’re a weak nation. We don’t have jobs. They were in this position many centuries ago with Chinese labor used to build railroad tracks in the United States. This writer is totally fucked up!

We’re rich on professional talents.
We’re weak because we cannot protect ourselves. We cry to America for help. We can’t replace our tiradors with real thing.
Our gunboats to patrol the Spratlys are more like banyera and dilapilated palangganas hahaha
Why? Funds and monies for our national defense have been in-your-face stolen brazenly by these assholes in the government.

Otherwise, what would prevent them from hiring Chinese amahs from the Mainland? the women would not be able to teach something new.

Having 130,000 filipina domestic helpers does not make China our masters. because if that is so, we can call china, the nation of tainted milk that killed children, we can call it a nation of cheaters for using low quality materials to earn more profit.

If the article meant to be a satire, then it is a very bad one.
When he said that he got a map and gave a harsh lecture to his maid, yes, I can say it was maybe a satire since it is pretty obvious that the Spratley is no way near mainland China. Perhaps when he said that Filipina maids work 16 hours a day, perhaps he meant to criticize HK Chinese employers. Perhaps, he meant to make them ponder on how they treat Filipino domestic helpers. Perhaps, he meant to tell us, Filipinos, that we are powerless against the booming China. When he spares the Russians and Japanese, perhaps it was an irony. Just perhaps…
But when he said that the Philippines is a country of servants – we should not mess with our master– that my friend, tells us that you are deluded with arrogance. You are trying to say that we are inferiors and that offends/hurts us so deeply. If that was meant to be satire, then you have a bad taste and you are a bad writer. Your attempt at irony failed miserably. The article is carelessly written and is very offensive to us Filipinos.

That’s right. At least for me.
To me that was not a satirical piece at all. Not from the way the writing came out. He might have a completely different intent – but I did not read it from his entry. What came out of that entry was one sick xenophobic and barbaric comment trying to foment hatred and possibly violence against OFWs and Filipinos. I’m furious with his entry. We Filipinos can distinguish what is satire, what is a joke and what is humor. As English is one of our official languages, I think it’s fair to say that who is he to teach us something about writing a satire? We know better.

1. someone should remind him that during those years when mao tse tung was their leader, millions of Chinese died of hunger.
2. those who survived were eating spolied rice rationed by the Red Army because the good ones were for the privileged people. the men of mao.
3. if mao did not die and his followers still implemented his principles, china would still be in the dark ages.
4. even today when china is considered an economiclly developed country, poverty and hunger still abound in several chinese provinces.
5. where he is, in HK, he should be reminded that HK is self-governing independent from Mainland China except for the military defense.
6. HK was a dependent territory of UK from 1842 to 1997.
PWEH.

China’s claim over the Spratly’s and Scarborough Shoal are way out of line and does not make sense at all. The spot is clearly nowhere near their land mass and all they want is definitely the oil underneath those small pieces of rocks.
Losing Sabah on the other hand was a case of blackmail. Malaysia threatened to arm the Bangsamoro people for civil war. It was a direct result of Marcos’ Jabidah massacre which backfired with Malaysians arming the MNLF during that time.
…and now they are supposedly brokering for peace in the south

Looking at it from a different perspective, I think the author is a sleek and witty writer. I think this satire got what it wanted to get in the open. We Filipinos are very passionate ultra patriotic people when it comes to defending our “honor”. Why of all the countries that has a claim on Spratly’s group of island did he single out the Philippines? Why not Vietnam or Malysia? Hindi kaya dahil hindi tayo nagpapautang ng salita and we can help him in his subtle agenda of criticizing his own country?
As a nation, it seems that war of words is our forte and he saw that and capitalized on that. Remember how our people obsessively criticized Daniel Smith? Remember how our people reacted to the hoax spam supposedly written by Art Bell (Filipinos Make Me Puke) before we even checked the authenticity of the email? If anything at all, the article got us talking about the Spratly’s in the open. In addition to that, the Filipinos were able to point out other sensitive issues including the Chinese people’s discrimination towards the OFW’s, the atrocities, the substandard products, the drugs, the smuggling, and all the things that his people are doing without it coming from his mouth as he is not at liberty, hence he’s terrified to do so.
I don’t condone what he says about us as people. A formal and objective protest letter on the issue would suffice. But the more we berate China, the happier he gets because we give him what he wanted. Think about that. And don’t be instruments to this person’s hidden agenda. If he has issues with his people and with his government, he must be man enough to say it directly rather than instigate it using the sensitive and zealous Filipino spirit.

Exactly! The article forced us to look at the glaring truth that we all chose to ignore for years…. That instead of creating more jobs, curbing corruption, driving our economy to the right direction, to collect revenues, our government chose to send our people abroad to work and send home the almighty dollars! And our government found this profitable so we do it in frenzied urgency without proper legislation and safety nets in place to protect our OFW’s. We of course become vulnerable to abuse. So then the government who we vested power to protect us, will once again have the opportunity for grandstandingand put their protest chorva.
On behalf of the OFW’s this is what I will say to our president, our legislators and other elected officials: You have allowed this to happen to me, pati OWWA funds kinukurakot pa, you did nothing to protect me so THOU HATH NO RIGHT TO BITCH ABOUT IT!

For a media person, he is not only history challenged, he is current events challenged too.
He wrote that the minimum wage of a Filipino domestic helper is is HK $3,580-a-month. That is below the minimum which is HK$3,670 set by the Hong Kong government..
How could he threaten his domestic assistants of termination when maximum contract is only two years?
How could he say that he is making her work for 16 hours when there is a specified number of hours required for them to work, otherwise, he is not only violating the minimum wage law but also the labor laws in his very own countrt.
Di ba bobo at istupido.
If this is satire as claimed by other writers, then I have also a satire news.

Sa akin lang, this is some sort of a personal thing sa akin dahil my mom used to be a maid kaya no wonder I instantly reacted furiously seeing that article. Kumbaga, may personal sting sa akin ito.Calling us a nation of servants / maids is not good satire at all. That’s way below the belt.
If his intentions is to write a good satire (and he used those kind of words), then, as Reesie said, its not a good satire at all.
This writer, has a history of getting negative comments because of his shock-jock approach in writing satire. He should have known that there is a thin line between satire and insult – he should be careful. There are also westerners who reacted heavily against him when he wrote an article way back in 2005. Not everybody appreciates this kind of humor.
http://www.asiamedia.ucla.edu/article-eastasia.asp?parentid=31608
http://hk-magazine.com/feature/politically-incorrect-chip-tsao-vintage-year
Dapat from that time, natuto na siya na he should be careful in doing satire – or else, somebody, someone or some other group of people will retaliate towards him.
And then, bakit nataon ang article nyang ito sa kasagsagan ng Spratly issue when China is bullying our country? Can you call that satire or plain pang-iinis dahil gusto nilang makuha ang spratlys?

Thanks sa pag agree ha. Actually kanya kanyang reaction talaga yan based on our values and life experiences. I chose to read not only between his lines but beyond his lines and see him for who he is – a user and a coward and I refuse to be used as his tool.
@ Silver:
It’s just me as a person. Kung kasi may hindi magandang opinion ang tao sa akin, I tend to look more inwards first and assess kung valid nga ba ang observation sa akin. A lot of times, secured naman ako sa aking capabilities and personhood kaya deadma na lang. Magngangawa sha hanggat gusto nya, mapapagod din yang panga nyan pramis. Ang mga maniniwala sa kanya without fact checking are equally ignorant bigot so their opinions don’t matter either kaya kiverr!
I salute your mother for confronting the situation head on kahit gaano kahirap. And you are who you are because of your mother’s sacrifices. Tell your Mama I’m proud of her for raising a smart child. Go Silver!

They have a long way to go or either that pag di naten nilabanan ang mga practices nila, we might be sucked into it, gaya nga nang mga ibang opisyales dyan na nababayaran na nang mga intsik sa kurakot nila. honestly, wala ka namang dapat ibahala since halos lahat tayo me dugong chinese, just like my mother. pero, di na ako intsik. uragon na akong pinoy. hahaha

This is not the only article where he was accused of being a racist., it is not true that he does not criticise his own counrty, In fact he did in this 2005 article
“”Hong Kong used to be an international city and English was important. But now we are just like the mainland. We talk about loving the motherland. In today’s atmosphere dating a gweilo is like selling out your country.”
He’s just trying to be controversial. IS All. and if his intention is to criticize his country, he has not right to do it at the expense of our domestic helpers.

This has been a very sensitive issue that nobody wants to discuss in the open. Spratly group of islands are geographically closest to the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam, but after the Philippine leaders kicked the US bases out of the country, China seized the opportunity of the region being vulnerable and they openly built permanent (military?) structures in the area. While I myself am slighted by the harsh words used against us Filipinos, the words used by the author is nothing new. I blame my leaders for fattening their wallets while allowing this to happen to us, OFWs. I have mixed feeling on the writer for pointing the sad truth out in a very harsh way…but I don’t blame him.
To the OFW’s out there, there is nothing to be ashamed of as far as cleaning toilets, being a nanny, or working literally the dirty jobs to earn a decent living. I will not even offer a single word in defense of that because there is nothing to defend. It’s a decent way to earn a living. It shows our resilience during tough times… Keep your heads up and do what you got to do to the best of your abilities.
Now, going back to the Spratly issue, ideally, individual islands in the Spratley’s should belong to the country closest to it for security purposes. But the other half of it is: Does our country have a distinct and secured border in the first place? Don’t illegals come and go as they please in our country not only via the real port of entry, but a lot of times through the back door, the side door, at kung anik anik pang door? Are we truly capable of securing and protecting our patrimony? Are we really capable of looking after the welfare of our people – the people that we wanted to stay with us? Mindanao nga gusto ng humiwalay due to decades of neglect, gusto pa natin mandamay ng mas nakararami? If we can’t even secure the 7,107 islands that we have right now, what difference would the Spratly’s make?
As for Borneo and Sabah, depending on what historical documents we look at, it can be seen as acquired illegally by the crown colony. But didn’t our government, along with Indonesia, witness the UN sponsored election in 1962 where the Sabahans along with four other major islands belonging to the protectorate chose to belong to the Malaysian federation? The result of that election made UN rule that Sabah belongs to Malaysia. Being a Mindanaoan who grew up in a predominantly Muslim area, I’m happy for the Sabahans. I’m sorry to say this but I think their lives are better under Malaysia than they would have been under the Philippine government.

alah kung nasaktan kayo, ako hindi kasi..
‘The War at Home’
“The reason: There are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as HK$3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong.”
abah hindi pa sya nakuntentu…
“you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.”
“gave her a harsh lecture”
harsh lecture? or torture? he mean that his kabayan now doing harsh things against Filipinos! dahil ingit sila! or baka naranasan din nila eto noon!
“but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher”
oh they have big nuber of hostages ever since, we oftenly hear real news regarding some ofws ikinulong at sinasaktan ng amo nila! ganun din nangyari sa ilan nilang kababayan sa kanilang mother land nuon!
” paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day”

It was full of irony, sarcasm and caustic wit. And I am convinced that either he failed to consider our temperament and culture as a nation OR he did it on purpose to bring about the exact reaction that he got. Either way, he was successful on making us debate about it.

Update:
Chip Tsao issued a public apology Tuesday night, which was aired over ATV’s 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. ATV is a private television network.
“The ’servant’ is a good term. A Hong Kong government official is a civil servant. We are all servants to God, right? I’m now aware that I’ve crossed the line and I offer my public apology,” Tsao was quoted as saying.
Read it here:

Opinion ko yun and you should respect it…

I don’t really understand why Spratly’s is worth such a fuss. Seriously, it would be more valuable to take back Sabah which if my geography is right, is much larger, and with more natural resources. Besides, Sabah is legally ours. Let’s take back Sabah now.

@Esbern,
Spratlys is a group of islands that are reportedly rich in oil and natural gas deposits. No wonder why countries like China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Philippines are scrambling over those islands.
Spratlys can be a key towards independence from Middle Eastern oil.
