Doctor na si Manny Pacquiao!
Huh?! Panong nangyari?
Cebu’s Southwestern University (SWU) has decided to confer an honorary doctorate on boxing champion Manny Pacquiao on Feb. 18.
Me nagreklamo
Dr. Aparicio Mequi, dean of the graduate school of Foundation University and a former chair of the Philippine Sports Commission, said that conferment of a doctorate in human kinetics (honoris causa) might be a violation of a policy of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and it cheapens the degree daw.
What is this policy?
CHEd Memorandum Order 52 series of 1996, which limits the conferment of honorary doctorates to law, humanities, music, pedagogy and science. Human kinetics is a study of sports, fitness and health.
Me humingi nang exemption
SWU president Dr. Eldigario Gonzales submitted a letter to the CHEd seeking exemption from the policy. He appealed to the CHEd to allow the conferment of the degree on Pacquiao in recognition of the dynamism and evolution of various disciplines in education.
Ano ba ang human kinetics?

Human kinetics = P.E. (Physical Education)????

No offense to Pacquaio..pero dapat ang mga ganyan degrees (PhD. at Masters) e dapat pinaghihirapan, hindi basta basta na lang ibinibigay…
Parang insulto na rin kasi sa mga taong nagpakahirap na mag-aral for their masters at PhDs.
At ang alam ko ang binibigyan ng honoris causa e the people who have already attained their masters and PhDs…yung talagang mga specialists na sa kanilang field like law, sciences and humanities…
Minsan e nakakaasar din si Pacquiao. Tingnan mo, balak pang tumakbo bilang politiko. Wag na nga siya kako magpakain sa bulok na sistema ng gobyerno. Merong mga paraan para makatulong sa bayan na hindi mo kailangan sumali sa bulok na sistema ng gobyerno.
Bakit hindi na lang niya ituon ang pansin at yaman niya sa pagpapaunlad ng sport na boxing (like boxing clinics etc) at pagtatag ng livelihood at foundation para sa mga beteranong boxers na kinalimutan na ng Philippine Sports Commission?
Hindi yung sumasali siya sa mga publicity stunt ng mga abnormal diyan.
At please, sana mawala na si Chavit Singson sa tabi niya kasi nasusuka ako sa itsura ng punyemas na yun.

i think i-set aside muna naten aspirations ni Manny to be a politician. di ba naka-reserve na sa kanya ang Congressman slot sa Quezon City?
ang drama kasi about sa pagkadoktor nya is drama nang Southwestern University at eto naman SWU eh atat na atat mabigyan si Pagquio nan honoris chorva so i think it’s not Manny but the university hahaha
pero i agree with you – nagmumukha kaming cheap ano! as in haller! dugot pawis at utang ang inabot namen makamit lang ang mga lintek na diploma na yan noh?

I don’t know much about the CHEd regulation or Manny Pacquiao so can’t comment on the honorary degree issue. Kailangan natin malaman kasi yung criteria bago natin masabi kung deserving ba o hindi.
May College of Human Kinetics sa UP-Diliman. Apart from PE, meron din silang sports science program, na pre-med course actually. Hindi lang puro laro at exercise, it’s also about physiology and anatomy. Seryoso yung course actually, nagdi-dissect pa nga ng cadaver eh. (Reynz, I know because Cliff was a sports science major.)

Human Kinetics? Yan ba yung dating SPEAR? Naalala ko noon sila Benjie Paras at Ronnie Magsanoc, PE ang kinuha nila para lang ma-qualify sa Varsity (transferees from San Beda). Last time in two centuries yata na nag-champion ang UP sa UAAP basketball.
Pwede naman mag-honoris causa kahit hindi tapos. Si Danding Cojuangco maraming doctorate na h.c. Kahit si Kit Tatad, may PHD h.c. rin. Parehong hindi nakatapos.

Nung panahon ko (kelan lang, hehe!) Ang UP SPEAR ay Sex, Premature Ejaculation And Rape. Hindi pala, School of Physical Education And Recreation pala.
I doubt kung mero nang at least one Doctorate ang nai-confer sa Human Kinetics tapos ang kauna-unahan honoris causa pa. Me anomalya yan!

hey reine,
i know in my school (Temple U) they don’t admit PhD students unless you have a masters degree. however, this is not an absolute rule because they say that unless you are one exceptional student, then they’ll move you up from bachelor’s to a PhD program. that’s also the rule at cornell u in new york and several other known schools.
and problem with SWU is that, first, they are not even allowed to grant a PhD on that line following the ChED circular. so dun pa lang, babaguhin na to accomodate Pacquiao.
the fact na they are trying their best to “accomodate” Pacquiao for a PhD is ridiculous. to me, it’s not Pacquiao, rather the school, unless there are hands at the back you know.
