What’s the buzz?
I was blog-hijacked by both the marketing company and a social networking site with a blatantly bad business social climbing strategy. And I am not happy. The organizer of that networking site and the business owner has to explain to me why they lied about their true business intent. I am not their property nor their inventory.
What happened?
I recently joined a social networking site for purely social climbing reasons. Nothing else. I met quite a number of really funny, wacky and outrageous bloggers who were of the same blog-bloodlines with me. I was enjoying it. I was having fun. At 80 years old, they made me feel very young. Like 79 years old young.
Invites started coming. Friend requests flew in. Surveys started flying. I responded. Joined in those wacky discussions. Even posted samples of my funniest entries on Reyna Elena as contribution. Yes, I was supporting the site. Even advertised it in my one blog entry which was heavily commented. Little did I know, there was $omething else behind this social networking site. I was so stupid to have not realized that there was business intent.
Survey
First, I was sent a survey of which I responded. Notice that right below was another invite to join a Bloggers Network. I did not join that network and this was the only email I checked on that site.
Starting a business?
Then, I received this email on gmail with codes attached!
“Starting business?”
“Partnership?”
WHAT?!
Did I miss something in that social networking site?! The email sent to me was “SURVEY LANG POH!“
Confucious
What in the world did I do? When did this happen? Have I signed some commitment papers while drunk? Bewildered, I responded!
wait a second! this is your business?
The truth behind the networking site
She responded:
Yeap ? I am managing an advertising and marketing company out of the virtual world. Currently, I am creating a large community of Filipino Bloggers where we can market the small medium and large company here in the Philippines then soon around the world.
Creating?! Was she the organizer of that networking site?!
No transparency
I shot back an email.
NGEK! You should have told me before hand kung ano ang plan mo. You cannot just use me or us without explaining to us what your intent was. I suggest you delete me from the list, otherwise – if you plan to use me in your business, then it calls for something that is “just and fair”. In business, you must practice transparency. I don’t want to be associated with any marketing company na di ko kilala kung ano ang drama nila. It will take time for you and I to get to know each other. I honestly don’t want you to take offense and I assume magagalet ka sa bluntness ko. Hahaha! But if you are doing this for business then you need to be careful and practice fair dealings. So here’s my request, please delete me from your list for now. Saka na lang. Reynz
Mr. X what are you doing?!
She responded with a rather perplexing statement. Mr. X created the social networking site hiding the true business intent? What gives?
:
Okie reynz, I’ll be deleting you now in the list. Just a question? Did you not get the message from [Mr. X] in [Cybersphere] about the nature of the business?
Nature of the business??? That was a social networking site! Where did I made a mistake?
Flavor of the month: Credibility
I responded:
No. And if this is the idea of [Cybersphere], then I am quitting that site too. Please understand me. Mahirap na talaga, especially na mainit ang credibility issue sa internet, so before we all join kung anong association or group out there, medyo we should all be careful.
Aha! Huli ka Mr. X!
She responded
You don’t have to quit the [Cybersphere]. [Mr. X] partnered with my company to create an adverts for Filipino Bloggers which is almost like a Google AdSense. I am creating a note for everyone about this issue. I am sorry if you did not get the whole message but I will be posting it in [Cybersphere] about the complete idea of the business. Hope you understand everything. Thanks anyway, if you are still going to join the network. Contact me and I will be the one who will give you the exact nature of the business. Again, the [Business] Marketing Solutions Company is sorry about this kind of issue. Hope to see you still around. Regards, [Miss Business Owner]
Thanks anyway?!
I was annoyed by that response. Thanks anyway? Matapos akong lokohin? That was it? I was angry now.
But what you guys did was not right. You hijacked me. I thought it was purely social network. That’s what it says. Business pala. I’m angry.
And a follow up
You and whoever your [Mr. X] partner has a lot of explaining to do to me with regards to [Cybersphere] and your business intentions. I am really upset with this hijacking.
I joined the affiliate?
She sent me another email essentially claiming that I joined the affiliate which to my knowledge I didn’t because I only responded to the survey:
I did not received your survey form answer but I received an affiliate form. All survey answers are not included in the affiliate members. They are being sent to different email address.
Email that I did not receive or opened?
I went back to the networking site and opened my mails. This was what I saw.
I NEED YOUR HELP WITH THIS.
In able for us to start the ADVERTISING BUSINESS and be paid by the ADVERTISERS.
We need to earn their trust.
How are we going to earn them?We need to show them the numbers. Ano ung numbers na un? VISITORS.
I need each and everyone of us to access the [BUSINESS] website in a daily basis. Ito ung address, http://www.[URL].com
Kelangan magkaron ng maraming visitors and mga comments ung site. Once nakita ng mga advertisers ung dami ng visitors and proven nila na madami nga talagang nag-vvisit sa site using websites like http://www.alexa.com and/or http://www.google.com/analytics dun lng sila magtitiwala sa atin na mag pa-advertise.
Kahit 1 month lang ang visitation period, malaking tulong na un to earn the advertiser’s trust.
Gusto nating kumita ng malaki using our own adverts, right? In that sense, mas maraming advertiser mas maraming pera papasok sa mga bulsa natin.
Makuha lng natin ung target na minimum of 100 advertiser monthly malaking pera na un for us.
Based dun sa monitor ko, 1000 impression in an average of 50 to 70 visitors kayang maubos ng 2 to 5 days. So, sabihin nating after 1 week, mag-rrenew ulit sila ng advertisement nila.
If yes. Paki-email ako sa [EMAIL]@gmail.com for further instructions. Subject should be HELP IS HERE
Maraming Thank you po at madaming salamat sa suporta na-iiyak na ako.
Why did I not know about the email?
Because it was sent dayssss after the survey.
Did I get an apology?
It looked like it. That was what the title of the email. It was a link to what’s supposed to be an apology.
This is the apology???
This message is to clear everyone about the business that me and [Mr. X] created just recently. I think everyone did not get the message that was sent to everyone. I received emails that they did not get the message clearly that [Business] Affiliates Network is an advertising business of [Business] Marketing Solutions Company.
The following is the nature of the current project:
We are helping out Filipino Bloggers to create a large community of Bloggers who wants to earn money while blogging. We are currently in the Beta Test state where we are monitoring the value of visits, clicks, and transactions made by the bloggers and their visitors in their web or blog site.
Once the Beta Test state ends, we are going to publish the proposal by emailing each members about how they are going to be paid. The Network Affiliates Member will receive the value of per impression or per adviews of their web or blog site every 30th of the month or whenever they want to withdraw their respective earnings.
The Beta Test of this project is FREE for all advertisers in able for us to know first the commodities of each advertisers who are doing business with our company.
The Affiliate Network Member will not pay any monetary value in an obvious reason of being a publisher of our advertisers ads.
This project is like Google AdSense, however, the only difference is your web or blog site is being paid per Ad Views, nothing more nothing less. You are also part of the community where your web page will be advertised to all of the members’ website. If you know Entrecard, where you can advertise your blog for free to a certain website and paying them EC points, then you know how it works. The only difference is that you don’t need to earn EC points to advertise to their website. Your webpage will be advertised to all of members of the networks for free to earn visitors.
Let’s say for example BLOGGER1 is a new blogger and BLOGGER2 is a tenured blogger and BLOGGER2 have 1000 visitors, as part of the Network, BLOGGER1 will earn visitor from other Networks in able for them to earn cash in viewing the advertisement that our adserver is dropping in the BLOGGER1′s website. In that sense, we helped BLOGGER1 to earn visitors and be known to the public at the same time earn money from advertisers.
If you’re an SEO, of course you can manipulate the Google AdSense like what we are doing BUT how about the others?
[Business] is a company who helps people market their chosen career. We are being paid by our advertisers and partners HOWEVER, as a Filipino Citizen, We Help each and every Filipinos to become successful.
If there are questions regarding this matter, you can either contact me via my email at [HER EMAIL]@gmail.com or post in this topic or PM me.
We in the company hope that everyone knows what our business is. We apologize to the people who didn’t get the exact nature of this project.
Again, [BUSINESS] Marketing Solutions is sorry about this issue.
Thank you.
My affiliations
This site is not associated with anybody other than the typical advertising companies that we all write for although I don’t write for them anymore. I am also not associated with any politician. The only group that this site is associated with, of which I am proud of, are the wacky group of the Lafftrip of Kwentong Barbero, which is just the logical choice for me, given that this is a humor blog.
Business affiliations
None. And I have no intention at the moment. There have been a number of bloggers already, who approached and invited me to do business with them. I declined them all. I received numerous invites to join blogging group but also declined, except one. She’s from Maryland, Leche! Kaisa-isang tinanggap ko! Hindi pa natuloy.
Why am I angry?
I felt betrayed. I felt that someone put one over me. The business approach was not only wrong, but it was also unethical. I was such a fool of joining and even supporting that site!
- The business objective was missing on the social networking site. None. You won’t see anything.
- Surveys did not include disclosures as to how it will be used, rather, there was a misleading statement that my site will appear on their site for a week. I did not realize that they were simply collecting information to be used for their business!
- Intent was never communicated from the beginning. Members should have been notified about the intent of the organizer. I don’t speak for all the members of the networking site, but just the same, I am not an “inventory” of that social networking site.
Lousy social climbers
I hate the fact that some visitors here are taking opportunity of me. Some have already tried to use me and by that, I get really angry. It’s a fact that some visitors here need to enroll in Social Climbing 101 because they are just plain lousy social climbers.
- Hi! Nice site! Pwedeng pa-link? This won’t work. I move them to spam.
- Patulong naman mag-promote nang site ko! Depends. If you’re a regular here, or your name sounds like The Kennedy’s or Barack Obama or Bill Clinton or Huffington Post or any of my close blog friends, then you will have my support. If you’re a one-time visitor, kiss Akismet.
- Users I don’t need to explain. One time, I came very close of spending a good amount of time and money.
- Link me and I will link you! And after you linked them? What happens? Manny Viloria calls it, nilag-blog
Noble mission?
If you notice, this marketing company is very noble in its objective.
We are helping out Filipino Bloggers to create a large community of Bloggers who wants to earn money while blogging.
Helping? What kind of company is this? I have no idea. I don’t even know who the owners are. You see, I am aware of bloggers creating non-profit companies yet, advancing their own business agendas using these non-profit platforms. I refuse to be associated with them. Almost always, there’s the noble mission. But at the end of the day, it’s really all about their own self-interest.
How to start, promote, advertise and market a business
We are not only touching some very basic social climbing lessons here, but this is Business Ethics 101. And my readers are intelligent enough to tell these people, the proper way how to start, promote, advertise, market a business or gather contacts following some ethical rules. And not by creating some social networking sites and rounding them up as if they are their inventory.
And yes, Bluepanjeet and I need to finish the Social Climbing Omnibus Code soon, as reference to future social climbers.
Whereas, I apologize that there were some Reyna readers who joined that site because I promoted it here, but some BODIES need to apologize to me before I start plastering their websites here.
Obviously, when I wrote this entry, I was angry and so I completely forgot about Janette Toral. Yes, I joined her Digital Filipino Network. However, given that I am in the United States, I am one very inactive member. Apologies to Janette for not mentioning this in my post.

Hindi ko pa naiintindihan ang buong detalye pero this is my opinion so far. Normally sa social networking sites, like myspace friendster or multiply, they can run ads and you don’t have to be paid for impressions you’ve made dahil when you use their service (social networking, i.e.) hindi ka naman nila sinisingil. So you become their asset. But the ads should only stay within the premises of their free pages and service. In some sites, if you pay for premium membership, nawawala ang ads. Ganun din ata yung site ni Claudia Coronel na laging lumalabas sa Google ads na nakahubad sya for the Pinoys. hahaha!
In your case however, I don’t know whether the codes they gave you is supposed to be placed in your own blog (reynaelena.com) or just within the confines of your profile in that social networking site. Also, I’m not sure if you have the option not to place that code in either your own site or you profile pages on that social networking site.
Although at this point, I still believe they should have informed you about their business strategy (and whether they want to give you additional incentives or what is another issue) because your own blog (i.e. reynaelena.com) has already reached a certain reputation that whatever group/business you become affiliated with, more or less, susunod ang mga followers mo with matching placards (bearing the words WIN SANTO NINO! which later on, ninanakaw para gawing punda ng unan. hahaha!).
Yun lang. Sana nilinaw nila kase, you’re right lalo pa ngayon, mainit sa mga pinoy bloggers ang issue about credibility.

ninang… you didn’t even have the courtesy to talk to me about this. i’m a little disappointed.
this is nothing but lack of communication and it’s blowing out of proportion. i don’t know how your conversation with mr. joy of linqedpotatoes went. but on my part, i don’t think i did anything wrong…
anyway, i am open to dialogue. and please, try calming down. ayokong matulad sa mga kawawang palestinian na binomba ng walang kalaban-laban.

ano ba yan… hindi ako mapakali… ayokong may nagagalit sa akin…
*kamot ulo*
anyway, for the record, buladas and linqedpotatoes are two separate entities.
mr. joy (he is a man nga pala. or so he says. hindi ko pa sya nakikita sa personal.) just approached me seeking for my help.
from what i understood, hindi kami direct partners (yung may say ako sa mga hakbang ng company niya kasi obviously wala). i just agreed to help him gather support by opening the forums up for him.
i have no fuckin’ idea about the surveys. if i had known, i would’ve not approved of them.
at times like these, i wish i had turned on the archiving option of yahoo messenger.
mali talaga yung choice of words niya at lalo na yung marketing strategy. maayos pa naman sana yung concept. if the smoke clears, i hope matuloy pa rin yung project (or something of similar mechanism).
kasi kung magsucceed yung ganung klaseng project, tayong lahat makikinabang e. if i only have the time, ihahands-on ko yung ganyang project.
ito na lang e… kapag lumago ang blogging industry sa pinas, sino bang makikinabang? lahat tayo! that’s what’s driving me to continue buladas and that’s why i wanna win you back.
yung panloloko, ako na siguro ang pinakahuling gagawa niyan. isang katarantaduhan lang ang pinagkakalat ko – ang pagkamatay ni stafano mori sa isang car accident three years ago on his way to a practice session for the upcoming jcs reunion concert.
yung success ng buladas at ng ganung klaseng advertising system relies solely on having a huge member base and maintaining it. web traffic is the key. at kung manloloko yung organizer nito, he’s doing just the opposite of what these kinds of networks are meant to do.
i know business. and i’ve done business. i’m no expert but i do know that credibility is always first and foremost.
and buladas is no business… it’s supposed to unite us pinoy bloggers not cause rifts such as this. if ever i intend to compensate myself for my efforts on the network, it would come solely from the traffic generated not from the members themselves.
linqedpotatoes is a business – a far from perfect business…
i am really so sorry. i’m taking full responsibility for the mix-up. i don’t know how i’d be able to make it up to you. but i will. god darn it, i will.
ninang, peace na tayo! i’d really love to have you back with us. i was so elated when you signed up in the first place. and i’d be really happy if you did so again.
please, please, please… accept my apologies…

This is my response to Gugol on number 11:
Gugul,
I could see na nakita mo ang comment ko that I wanted to talk (write) with you in private. I actually sent you an email here: halikinuboyz@yahoo.com. Obviously di mo nakita. Which is ok. I’m sorry you were disappointed with me blogging this, but the turn of events made me pretty annoyed sa what happened and I should have waited for your response – kaso we live in different time zones – you are about 12/13 hours advance at pag gizing mo, tulog ako.
True – lack of communication – dapat naka-disclose ang plans ninyo dun sa social networking site. All of the “come-on-join-us” articles na sinulat mo were just that.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting a business. Offline and online. But when the intent is not properly disseminated to people who are using the site – either through a page on “About Us” or “Disclosure” or “Policy” or even a blog article then that’s wrong because it misleads people.
Nakita mo naman how I was enjoying one project that you did and I reciprocated with advertising your social networking site on my blog. Why? Because I love what you created at ka-dugo ko ang mga tao dun who are just wacky and crazy and funny. That’s how I was enjoying the site.
But that “talk” and “agreement” and “partnership” you have with Joy of linqed potatoes just made me feel na para bang isa ako sa mga properties or inventory ninyo and to think that I even supported this survey. Again – hinanap ko yong required disclosures, wala akong makita – just in case I missed. Yon ang source nang galet ko. And the emails sent to me by Joy did not even quench the pag-ka-inis ko sa strategy na ginawa. It made me feel more like, aba! Kasalanan ko pa at ayaw ko mag-join sa network when in my mind, indi ako kasali dun? Something was totally – totally wrong. This is now between you and Joy. It’s your word against her word. Labas ako sa usapan ninyo.
No question, kung mag-succeed kayo sa plano nyo, it will be another money-making entity for Pinoys sa internet. I’m not saying na it’s wrong to partner with her or vice-versa. I’m not saying na it’s wrong to open and start a business. What’s wrong is the way this whole thing was conducted through blog-hijacking.
What should have been done?
1.) I will register the company and get the required licenses and everything.
2.) I will open a website for the public to see re: transparency. Names of the people who manage and operate that company should be listed there.
3.) I will approach Gugul kahit na informal email and introduce my company, what it does and what are its plans.
4.) Gugul will announce the letter to the social networking site so everyone will know. Tawag dun press release.
5.) Gugul will make the required disclosure kahit isingit dun sa ibang page about the business intent or plans nang networking site para indi mag-mukhang tanga ang mga users nang site na yon.
6.) If Gugul partners with Joy – then a press release should have been made at ibalandra dun sa site.
7.) The Survey. – The Survey must not be misleading because it was.
8.) Watch the language about the business. Ano yong sinasabing mina-manipulate ang google adsense? Would I want my name to be connected dun sa mga gumagawa nyan? Nevah.
9.) Create a DISCLOSURE PAGE at dun mo i-disclose ang mga business plans and projects ninyo why you opened that site at ilagay mo ang mga business partners mo.
10.) Create an ABOUT US at dun mo sabihin na that is not just a social networking site but also a business project in the making.
Finally, etong buong blog entry na to ang buong nangyari between the email conversation with me ang Joy at kung pano ko nahuli tong mga business projects na to. I emailed her that even the “apology” na pinadala eh para pang nang-ii-nsulto.
Apologies accepted. Pero number 9 and 10 are my special request for the benefit of those people na mapadpad sa networking site mo.

hindi ko po sya partner. the business was solely his. as i’ve said, buladas and linqedpotatoes are two completely separate entities.
i was plainly offering support and encouragement to him dahil naniniwala ako dun sa purpose ng project. i had absolutely no hand sa mga ginawa niyang hakbang during the recruitment process.
ito po yung announcement ko –> http://buladasphere.ning.com/forum/topics/pangkabuhayan-showcase-para-sa
nakalagay po dun yung “beta testing”, “data gathering” at “wala pang kikitain during the phase”, all of which hindi niya naisama sa mga messages niya sa mga sumali (na hindi man lamang niya kinunsulta sa mga kasali sa buladas LALO NA SA AKIN).
judging from the lack of replies dun sa announcement ko, inakala kong hindi bumenta yung concept. so, i tended to other more important activities (offline and online).
i was not getting any feedback from mr. joy about the progress of the project until eto nga, naargabyado na pala ang ninang ko.
parang ikaw, i felt used. but i know his intentions were good naman. nagkamali lang talaga siya sa approach at inamin na niya iyon sa akin.
i won’t be making any “disclosures” and “about us” kasi buladas is not a business. at hindi akin yung business ni mr. joy. kanya lang yun. sumusuporta lang ako sa kanya. i made sure na everything had links to his site’s company.
hindi ako humingi ng disclosure sa kanya dahil magdadata gathering pa lang naman dapat siya. the program (the earning and payment system) was not to be operational pa. depending sa magiging result ng data na magagather kung dapat ba niyang ilaunch yung advert system. dun ko pa lang hihingin yung legal mambo jumbo.
sorry, ninang. masyado akong trusting e. pati tuloy kayo nadadamay. i’ll be very careful next time.
gets a martilyo and makes pukpok head. *lesson learned*

Gugol,
Honestly, I like all those members there, especially the wacky ones. Alam mo naman kung nasaan ang dugo kong tikbalang sa mga kautotan, you know. But I’d rather not.
First, this is not fair dun sa mga bloggers na dinek-layn ko ang mga invites. Isa na dun si Kenjebs of Pinoy Expats. Can you imagine na I declined him? But he was very gracious with my email and understood me.
Good luck na lang sa site mo and many thanks.

This is a response to the issue sent via email by an anonymous commenter:
——————————————–
This is considered fake traffic. They are trying to manipulate the “so-called visits” just to present it to the prospective advertisers. Think of it as a glorified doorway page. Google will be able to identify this thru their email referral (saan ba una nagumpisa ang traffic ng patatas marketing na yan? eh di ba nalink bait sa survey/
email). Pulling in some notable bloggers para nga naman may credibility ang network.
Frankly speyking they wont be able to pull this off.
Why? Check the survey form (dyusme!) if they can’t provide a decent form/ survey, what made them think they can come up with their own ad-network (this involves a lot of scripting, more complex than a simple contact/ survey form).
Kung back-up nila ay nasa pagitan ng faction abe-jv, not really sure. Nakita naman natin kung ano nangyari sa mga binuong network ng magkabilang panig, what more galing sa n00bs.

natulog lang ang pandak, dami ng kabulastugan, RE, I am very sad to say I have really lost hope with some of our Kabayans, kahit na physical na nakikita mo or dito sa blogosphere, panay may mga maiitim na balakin, panay liars, liars, denials, denials. kaya ang pinupuntahan ko lang eh ikaw at si Ca t. during the time that time I summoned my kapal muks to add comment to Ca t, I e-mailed her my phone number, at least me assurance ako na totoong tao si Ca t, since I’ve noticed you always add comments on Ca T site, I felt and reassured by my gut feelings na totoong tao ka rin
when it comes to businesses either on line or those inaalok ako like yong ytb your travel business aba lintek na tumataginting na $500.00 ang hinihingi, ive tried to decline as professionally as I can, pero pag meron pang nangulit, isasampal ko na sa kanila ang katotohanan na pyramid lang ang mga yan. Hopefully before the end of January 2009 eh bumawi naman at maging good news ang mga entries mo, you have so much talent and knowledge I’m sure you will be rewarded accordingly much more than you ever deserve. oh sige tulog ako ulit hindi para tumangkad but to wake up early to watch O’bama Nation sa television tomorrow. di ba nga kasabihan, If it sounds too good to be true. …. beware, kaya ayon marami nang nagsuisuiside or make themselves vanish after losing a lot of money sa mga investment nila.

one of the worst social climbing na sumambulat saken was befriending my officemate, yong Vietnamese, not sure kung nabasa mo yong entry na yon.
friend friend ang gago, naniwala naman ako, drink drink pa kami, then nung nag-resign ako at look nang work, i used him as my reference. kampanti ako na he will really tell the truth about my work and everything – leche! tinira tira ako!
up to now, my ex-officemates believe na sya ang reason kung bakit bumaliktad ang Chicago. ganun kalupit ang baliktad nang social climbing sa muka ko.

anyway,
Im a member din (a moderator- actually) of that site. I had that coming kaya hindi ko pinansin. And besides, i wasnt really interested in making money thru net. I agree with this post coz from the moment i read that letter saying that i should visit the site everyday, or making that site as my homepage i know there’s already something wrong w/ it. Its as if im compelled to do something that isnt really clear to me kung bakit.
anyway, in fairness to all concrend, specially dun sa promotor ng site na yun, i really do think he wasnt informed as well, i dont know him personally but alam ko nabigla din sya. and to that business minded guy, he didnt really put up a fair show, but still i have to give him credits for trying. (lolz)
anyway, naunahan mo kong iblog ito. hahaha. But simply because im sure that u have a lot more readers than i do, i know maraming naabot tong post mo.
hehe.
o pano. paalam muna.
im still supporting the site though, its still a wholesome and wacky site para sakin . nagkataon lang na nabahiran ng kung anong hindi magandang business proposal.
