Unemployed Philippines: Bahala na

by reynz on January 3, 2009

11 million Filipinos will be out of work

Former Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said that millions of Filipinos would either go unemployed or be underemployed as the export sector would continue to slow down. The number? 11 million. That’s almost the entire population of Metropolitan Manila.

Electronics: Layoffs planned

The electronics sector currently employs about 420,000 workers, the garments sector has 120,000 workers and coconut oil processing sector 12,000. They plan to layoff workers this year.

Cebu exports suffers

And when you have ninety percent of your products exported to the United States, chances are that your industry becomes in trouble too. That’s what’s happening to Cebu exporters. Exports like furniture, electronics and fashion accessories to the US were affected.

OFW employment: gains and losses

This news says that 50,000 OFW’s are expected to lose their jobs this year. Relaxation of visa requirements for nurses does not help the projected slowdown in the hiring of Filipino nurses in the United States. While in the Middle East, there’s 20,000 nurses that’s needed. Health care workers job lookout is on a positive side. They’re also needed in the United Kingdom.

OFW remittances: big help to local economy

One good news that will continue to bring hordes of shoppers to Philippine malls is that OFW remittances that’s been helping the Philippine economy be afloat will break the $17 billion mark this year. It’s a big chunk, unfortunately, that big amount of money just would not spark the Philippine economy totally.

Don’t care attitude?!

Interestingly, despite these dire forecast and predictions, one would think that risk management from some economists would immediately trigger some pro-active actions. Think again for this is all what they have to offer.

“No one can really predict with certainty what lies ahead. The important thing is that we all unite and prepare our countrymen from worst case scenarios that the global crisis may bring,” Dureza said in a statement.

Cellphone welding

That’s it?! I was expecting more about jumpstarting the economy to create jobs. I heard that there’s an economist in the house! I honestly don’t want to sound sarcastic but an advice coming from a graduate of Georgetown University must be good. “Be a welder or try cellphone repair!”, that what she said. Huh?! Cellphone welder sure is an eye-catching employment position!

“For those of you who can’t get jobs in caregiving, try other forms of training like welding, automotive, cellphone repair, the demand abroad is high,” she added.

Will reintegration work?

Not all is bad. The Department of Labor and Employment has said it would be dispatching “reintegration teams” to companies employing overseas Filipino workers who face layoffs due to the global financial crisis. Have they been dispatched? What exactly are they going to do?

“We will get ahead with the situation by sending our staff into the worksites even before the OFWs get laid off or decide to head home. We will profile them, ask them what other jobs they could do and determine where they could be redeployed.”

Reintegration?! In a landscape of unemployment?! I say, good luck, especially if they’re from OWWA. The most hated agency by Overseas Filipino Workers.

Peso continues to tumble

The Peso continues to fall because of the gloomy and our continued vulnerability to the world’s economy, especially that of the United States. That’s the reason why NEDA is having some troubles with their forecast of 5% growth.

Are you prepared to dance?

Listen, I have one crazy la vida loca right now and I’ve been out of work for 6 months now and if I tell you that it’s tough to find a job in America, you better believe me because there’s more than a million of us buying Sunday papers to look for a job. I don’t know what’s in store for me this year, all I know is that it’s really tough if you don’t have a job. Of couse, you know that already. So, if you’re an Overseas Filipino Worker, just how prepared are you when faced with a lay-off? Take it from someone whose experiencing it right now and do not ever ever do the trick that Reyna did. Here are some of the things that I can tell you:

  1. Update your resume and references.
  2. Do I still have to remind you on this? Sometimes, opportunity might knock and then you don’t have a ready and updated resume. Guess who’s got more chances of getting the job?

  3. Don’t panic.
  4. You need your stable mental mind to map out your next strategy. Who knows, this could just be temporary. After all, heard about cycling? Ups and downs? This could be a blessing in disguise for you to find a more fulfilling job or a rewarding business. But you certainly won’t be able to explore your options if you are in panic mode.

  5. I hope you have enough savings.
  6. You don’t start cutting back discretionary purchases and start savings after you were laid off. You should have done this already before. Financial planners recommend that you should have enough in your emergency fund to cover your expenses for between three and six months. Some say, even more. Lucky you if you have a severance package. But the rule is, the more you were able to save away, the more peace of mind you’ll have if the axe falls on you.

  7. Be level headed.
  8. Don’t burn your building. Don’t punch your boss. Don’t even cuss them. Don’t you ever wield a bolo. Layoff decisions are based on so many factors and with the global economic slowdown, as an Overseas Filipino Worker, you are far more tuned in to the economic news that anyone else. Don’t let rumors consume you. Don’t lose sleep and waste your energy on what your employer is up to. You should rather be mapping out your next move with a series of “What if” scenario.

  9. How’s your Social Climbing Skills?
  10. Sometimes, it’s all about network, connections and the right people to know. They have inside knowledge of hiring. Were you able to network with the right people? Were you able to gain their respect? Now, be careful with social climbing. It borders between being a “user”, that’s not what I meant.

  11. Do you have another set of skills?
  12. I remember our friend James. His passport for US employment was the Y2K. After several years, there was a huge displacement of programmers in the United States. He saw the scenario of him being laid off. He studied part-time at the Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Nursing. While some of our programmer friends have been moving from one job to the other, James graduated last year and is now working as a nurse at the Jefferson University Hospital.

Bahala na

Bottom line, prepare because it will be a difficult year. Mabuti pa yong iba, malaki ang nakurakot. Ikaw? Nag-iisa ka. But, you know the drill. Bahala na. I still believe that we will survive.

Welding is a special skill lalo na yong pang-industrial such as tig welding.

AKo naghahanap ng mga 30-40 ka tao who are willing to be trained for SAP and Oracle. Fresh graduates or those with experience but want to shift to Consulting, Preferably with Accounting background, CPA an advantage. Pwede rin Management, Industrial Engineering. But you know what, ang hirap maghanap ng mga gusto mag “re-tool” or fresh graduates.

Hehehe.

Kidding aside – tayo talaga una matatamaan since our economy is dependent on employment – either overseas or local. Sana ang gobyerno will make good of its promise to help people start their own business, and also develop our agriculture sector, put most of the money in there. Huge amount of money were allocated to micro business and agri business financing, but nobody seemed to benefit from those billions of pesos.

hayyy. Mag boxer nalang kaya ako. :-)

You know what’s lacking with Pinoy? Creating VALUE for themselves. Mahilig kasi ang Pinoy sa easy money. They choose money over career. They fail to realize na kung magtiis muna sandali sa maliit sa sweldo pero magandang experience they will have better oppurtunities in the future.

Uu Kamahalan, hirap talaga maghanap – training kasi so inaayawan. Gusto talaga ng karamihan eh malaki sweldo agad. Kung nung time na nag start ako mag work at may trainings na ganito, di bale na kahit 2 yrs maliit sweldo ko, titiisin ko. You know what I mean, SAP/Oracle Consulting is probably one of the best career in the industry pag experienced kana. Sobra nga lang yung experienced, asking salary nila average of 3,000- 4,000 USD kahit dito Philippines. Kaya talo rin ako sa bids ko sa U.S. – kalaban ko Indian and Chinese wla pa sa kalahati.

Hehe, kaya I decided na mag train ako – mga 3-6 months training, then they can be very marketable. I need to start the training this January esp for SAP. A client in the Philippines is asking me to give them like 20-30 people to support their implementation.

Tama sabi ni Nina, kung sana marunong muna magtiis ng ilang buwan, there’s a bigger opportunity later on. I’ve done it a long time ago. Whats amazing is, ang daming new grads even business related courses but they don’t know what’s SAP or Oracle. Kahit di pa uso masyado internet nun, I always made it a point to know what’s the latest in business, acctg, etc.

Ngayon iba na. Kabisado kung ano latest gadgets, games, social network site. Hehehe.

That’s true middle east is hiring nurses.

Anyways, I think nurses are still in-demand. I know some nurses doing volunteer work kahit walang sweldo para magka experience kasi sa abroad experience ang basehan.

Karamihan sa nurse US ang target. Kala kasi nila pangit sa Middle East. ME is not that bad lalo na kung open country like Qatar.
