The world is never short of dumb people

The world is never short of dumb people. I’m sorry for my rants. But, am fine. I maybe out of work, but the only stress I get is from blogging! I know, I know, kanya-kanya tayong dumbassness Hahaha!

As you all know, my full-time job right now, is to look for a job. Before the bloody Chicago fiasco, I was all over the place. From Boston to Chicago, Delaware, New York, New Jersey and in and around Philadelphia. I have been out of work for 6 months now.

When I came back from Manila in late October 2008, then finding out that the Chicago job offer was a kaput, I have not even adjusted to the jet lag, but I was already out there in the streets, attending job fairs. I actually never stopped looking, even in the middle of non-stop blogging.

Qatar

Last week, I received an international call. From at telecommunications company in Qatar. A certain Luke. He interviewed me on the phone. Said he liked my credentials. It was about 2:00 am EST (Philadelphia/New York Time). I was half-asleep, half imagining what Jeff was doing. The finance job sounded perfect. After about 45 minutes on the phone, I will have another interview in the morning. From there, they will fly me to Qatar for a face to face interview. And then, if things went well, there will be an offer. He asked me how soon I could start. There seemed to be an urgency. He already told me about where to look for an apartment of a “villa”? (first time I heard villa) and buy second hand cars. But before we finished the call, he made two final questions. He apologized for one question because they don’t ask these types of question in the US. One: he asked me about my nationality. I told him, I was American of Filipino ethnicity. I think he was confusing ethnicity with nationality. Then he asked me about my age. The following day, I received an email. He said, they’re putting the hiring on hold. So, age or ethnicity?

I have heard all types of rejection stories already that it would be enough for a year’s blogging content. Some of them, I will actually blog. This, was one of those.

Biggest job challenge

Sadly, it is the more challenging now to look for a job because there are about a million of us looking for a job. So, it’s an employer’s market. Meaning, they will price you down to your bare ass. Throughout the course of my job search, the biggest challenge was essentially, how to keep upbeat and keep my spirits high and shrugged off rejections. Yes, rejections. Job rejections. I believe, I have excellent credentials from Temple U and GWU. But this time around, those are not guarantees.

Networking

In a job market like this, MBA, PhD, best schools does not matter anymore. You need to start making calls to your connections. Who have you networked with before. They would play an important part of your job search. Because they are the ones who have the inside knowledge. When they’ll post and advertise the job. In America, companies are required to post the job. It’s part of the equal opportunity ruling.

Is there equal opportunity in Manila now?

In Manila? I was no graduate of best school. I come from the Barrio. But some of my nephews and my nieces were now the ones who were lucky to have gone to the best schools. Not me. So, back then, looking for a job in Manila was a nightmare. At least for me. Scholarship and medals were not good enough. They are never good enough. They won’t ever, ever be good enough. Nor my school. And as always, I hate it when they put shit like “only graduates of chorvalais”. Gawd!!! I feel so like on the other side of the fence! Like barbed wire fence! Like live wire fence! That kinda fence. Freak employers who knew nothing about equal opportunity! I don’t know if it is still the same. I get treated differently now. But then again, my resume has changed. Reyna na ako.

But the world is never short of dumb people.

Washington DC

In my Washington DC interview, I had to explain the Uniform CPA Examinations which was similar to the Philippine CPA Licensure Exams. I had to explain the 6 years in elementary, the 4 years in high school and the 4 years in College. I had to explain that we started learning English since Grade 1.

Boston

In my Boston interview, I had to explain that English is one of the official languages in the Philippines. That English is the lingua franca in business, in church, in print and broadcast media and yes, even when you cuss people, its better said in English. Although mas malutong pag Bikol. Sa b’ray ka ni ina nya an!

Chicago

In my Chicago interview, I have to draw the map of the United States and tell them they don’t need a passport to go to New Mexico. Hahaha! Charing lang! I just bloody hate them! Grrr!

Philadelphia

At work? Some of the people have no clue where the Philippines is. They thought we are somewhere in the Caribbean. I said, No! It’s in Eastern Europe! Sa b’ray ka ni ina nya an!

So true! Some people are so ignorant they don’t know this country with 90 million people! Ako naman, despite my “European education” (dalawang master’s), hindi pa rin natanggap for PhD sa kahit anong Ivy League dyan sa US ‘no. Kakainis! Kahit parang ruler and grade ko nung undergrad (sige na, payagan nyo na ‘kong magyabang ng konti lang, hehe), hindi nila pinansin kasi ano ba naman yung Unibersidad ng Plipinas, never heard yata nila. Anyway, sana mahanap ka na nila Reynz, and by nila, I mean yung mga tulad nating smart, hehe. :D

sa ivy league kasi, kelangan malakas talaga ang backer mo, importante kasi yong letter of recommendation.

eto maipagmamayabang ko hahaha gumanda ang GMAT ko dahil i have some really really uber talino friends, yung isa math prof sa DLSU at yung isa naman UP scholar who went to a school in London, tinuruan nila ako how to take the test at hindi yong how to answer the test hahaha.

so, good enough sa Wharton and i have 2 really good recs. reason why opted out Wharton? leche! ayuf ang tuition nang MBA hahaha indi naman ako Gokongwe noh? so i settled for Temple which was also good, halos half the price and top chorvalais naman yong MBA nila in the world.

Heniways, the first time I went to US, I attended a conference in Texas. I introduce myself and mentioned I am from Qatar. Then the emcee asked me again where I am from so I repeated – I am from Qatar. He replied back – can you tell us where in the globe is Qatar. So I said, it’s in the middle east, near Dubai and Saudi. During the break a guy approached me, so you are from Dubai? Duh?

And to think Qatar has the third largest gas reserves and among the countries with the highest per capita income.

With regard to job hunting naman – I was lucky na all of my job including my present job is sariling sikap – no connection. I said all – kasi kahit may job ako na recommended ako ng friend ko dumaan pa rin ako sa interview ek ek kaya I would still consider it as sariling sikap.

The problem with our educational system – it is not recognized outside the Philippines. Why? Because we only 10 years of pre-college education. That’s why if you want to study college abroad, either you attend an international school with the standard 12-grade level or you attend 2 years of college in the Philippines before you get accepted in the US or Europe.

Problem talaga ang lack of qualified teachers at good facilities.

Both locals and expats here have high respects for Filipinos kasi alam nila na hard-working tayo.

Next time pag may nag-interview na company here in Qatar, sabihin mo American Nationality period.

That’s the main reason why I opt to stay and study here even if it takes extra mile and over hundred bucksss student loans to pay back atleast I am sure that if I’ll pursue further education I wouldn’t have to worry about those crap! Even in undergrad school is hard to get in, maraming eksamen na dapat pagdaanan, accreditation of previous subjects taken from out of country schools/university, which means shit dahil imbes na 3 units, its equivalent credit would only be 1.5 or if you’re lucky 2. Suma total kelangan ulitin at magbayad ng limpak-limpak!

Yes, you really need to use your connections if you want to apply for a job on top…

Companies now a days are so full of crap when they are turning down the applicants.. They should not go beating around the bush about crap..

Time is very valuable now a days.. Nobody wants to work a lowlife blue collar job forever right…

Grabe nga din talaga ano. Biro mo, may isa ako project sana for a US Client, they were very eager to start, tapos, may nag submit na Indian at Chinese companies, wala pa sa kalahati ang consulting charges nila.

Just the other day, many US companies have laid off average of 8-12% workers.
