I did not get the job in Washington, DC. What I got instead was a confirmation that I made the right decision to leave my former work.
DC asked for three (3) references and I have some super people to back me up. A Senior Vice-President of CBS Radio in Atlanta, a Vice-President of MMA Financial and another Vice-President of John Hancock. The last two were two of the largest investment houses in Boston. All of them I have worked with very closely, on a professional level. An excellent relationship. The one from CBS became my very good friend since 1990 until now.
DC asked for more. They wanted to talk to somebody from my former work. When you quit your job, as in my case, chances are that you will not get anything good from them. Given the history of my former employer with their former employees looking for a job, I have heard so many horror stories. I explained to DC that I don?t want them to talk to my former boss. They understood me.
We settled with two (2) names. The Finance Manager that reports to me and a Senior Vice-President who I worked with very closely on a lot of deals. Both of us attends to two (2) major meetings on a weekly basis and are members of two committees. We have a professional rapport. We would have drinks occasionally, had dinners with the rest of our teams and I felt that we had a very good professional relationship. I knew very well that he was very happy with my work, he said it many times in our meetings and I felt very comfortable of giving his name. Even my superior gave me a stellar review. Heck, my position at my former work was actually a promotion! And I passed several people then at work, they thought I was superman!
So, I left a message on his phone yesterday about the DC people calling him. He never returned my call. Not that it matters, but he was Vietnamese and the guy reporting to me was Caucasian. I knew, I’d be ok.
The Chicago offer arrived and is waiting for my signature. I was just waiting for DC to make a decision. DC told me and emailed me that they really liked me. The President told me that he had a great conversation with me. We were talking about what happened in Wall Street. He was talking about subprime. He was stunned when I told him, that although subprime was “a” real culprit; it was actually the CDS (credit-default-swap) that brought down Lehman Brothers, AIG and the other big-named investment companies. He loved that conversation. He talked about the bailout. I brought up the car racing track tax breaks. He was laughing his heart out. Going home to Philly that night, I knew I nailed the interview.
This afternoon, DC called. He said, the Finance Manager gave them a very good response. Of all the references who gave me great feedback, there was only one who was very negative. He mentioned the name. But he did not discuss in detail what it was. Just a few hints. It was the Senior VP at my former office. I was stunned. I didn?t know what to say.
I called his Project Manager and I told him that I was so damned pissed. I felt like I was stabbed at my back. This was the guy I drank with, I dined with, and I laughed with. This was the guy who I helped save the company about $6.9 million one weekend where I had a car accident and the company would not even pay my bloody cheap $500 deductible for my car repair. This was the guy that I really thought I had a pretty good relationship with. This was the guy that I thought was a friend. If I was fighting to win DC, it was all because it was closer to Philly. But for me to lose the job because someone fucked me up, that was bloody ugly. I was pissed but I felt relieved because I am now more comfortable that I made the right decision to leave that hellish job, otherwise, I fear I would be influenced by their sick mindset.
A few hours ago, I signed and faxed my acceptance of the Chicago job offer.
