Considering that I am now swamped as ever with new Overseas Pinoys, I thought I would bring to top an entry I made last year which will hit you if you are an OFW. Especially now that things seems to be not looking good on the horizon. So, if you are on Overseas Pinoy, this entry is for you.
Since Salve of The Inquirer’s Money Smarts ignited the OFW blood in us for a project that she did, I thought, “I shall return” ala-McArthur sa isang entry which I originally posted on May 27, 2007 - What made you decide to work abroad and where? I really enjoyed reading the responses by my wacky readers. I’m sure you’ll have a blast just like myself hehehe!
However, If we could add some twist and include those who are presently working sa Pinas, to give us some thoughts about staying or leaving on a jet plane if ever. So, why don’t you all share us kung ano man yang mga himutok nang buhay nyo why you left our turd world kawntri, kung ilang asawa ang tinakbuhan nyo, kung ilang mga pinagkakautangan ang tinataguan nyo, kung ilang child support and tinakbuhan nyo and respond to this Presidential Debate question.
So tell us…
If you’re an Overseas Pinoy:
“What made you decide to work abroad and where? Or, what made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why? FINAL QUESTION: Are you happy where you are now?”
If you’re working in the Flippines:
“What made you decide to work the kind of work that you do? FINAL QUESTION: Do you dislike OFW’s? or any negative perception about them?”

- the current work status of Nurses here in the Phils. — 3 applications pending: New York, Florida and London.Anywhere but here.
- (USA) My family is already there, most of my friends are there, and the dream that I’ve been waiting for my whole life is there. I guess I’ll just visit from time to time, yung magbabakasyon ba at mag tatravel sa ibat ibang lugar dito sa pinas.
- not anymore, aside from financial status here, I wanted to go abroad to breathe some new fresh air, start anew and leave the past behind. ganun lang kasimple. ![]()

What made you decide to work abroad and where?
- It’s hopeless in the Philippines unless you are related to the politicians, the more corrupt the better. That’s why I saved like crazy to be able to get out of the Philippines and go anywhere BUT the Philippines. Luckily, I landed here in the US.
Do you still intend to go back
- Yes, to visit. When that time comes that the Philippines becomes a civilized society run by honest to goodness true leaders, I will go home. In the meantime, I have no interest other than visit.
Are you happy where you are now?
- Yes and No.
- Yes because the US gave me what my country will never be able to give me since everyting goes to corrupt government and business people.
- No because I am far from home.

I made a desicion to stay here in U.S because of my husband who is a citizen here. I am happy since I got the chance to help my family and see the beautiful places in U.S. However, no place like home, i prefer to go back in our own country when I get old and spend the rest of my life there with my family, relatives and friends.
For now, I want to earn and save money for my old age hopefully.

Good Morning H/H Reyna Elena,
1)First of all, hows your internet caffe in Antipolo going on.
2) Response on Why’s
What made you decide to work abroad and where? I decided to work abroad for only one reason; THERE IS NO AVAILABLE STABLE EMPLOYMENT FOR ME IN THE PHILIPPINES.When i was still in the Phil. way back 1988 I was working in a construction company ( but never get regular )and when ever the building is almost finish I started wondering what is next. At that time my daily wages was 40 PHP.It just go on and on, sometimes there is job sometimes there is no job pero anak ng foto yung sikmura ko at sikmura ng anak at ina ng anak ko ay kailangang lamanan lagi, hinde pwede yung sometimes may laman sometimes wala.
Im almost 19 years now here in Abu Dhabi. WALA PA RING NAIPON KUNDI GRATUITY LANG.
What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why? Nasagot ko na po yung unang parte ng katanungan do you still intend to go back and why Contract workers lang po kami, on any given time pwede po kaming mapauwi due to either termination or finish contract, but then if i got a chance to have a local passport here babalik pa rin po ako ng pilipinas, I do believe na puhunan lang ang kulang ko meron na akong sipag at tyaga, kung yung ibang lahi nag bi bisnis sa pilipinas ako pa kaya na sarili kong bansa yun.
Are you happy where you are now? hinde po kompleto, Ilalarawan ko po.

I intend to go back home when all the kids have finished college. So far 3 have successfully graduated; one more to go.

Working abroad has occured to me as lucrative and easier money but with the discomfort of being away from your loved ones and those things that are familiar. I have tried to convince my husband to apply for a canadian immigration but two years has passed and he’s still thinking it over ;D The mere fact that I’m not pushing the issue means I am quite content where we are. But the longing for overseas wind is still tugging at my heart every now and then. Without consideration to anything or anyone else I’d prefer to live in Canada and work there. I’ve recently viewed a cross comparative study of benefits given to parents and saw how good it is to live in other countries where money and time seem to be easier. My child’s education -both formal and cultural- too is a main concern for migrating to another country where she can learn, live and strive without common problems that lurks by newly emerging industrialized countries as ours. Nonetheless I salute the country’s culture in rearing it’s youth to be respectful to elders, to show other people common courtesy and to understand the teachings of God early in life. For these reasons and more, every overseas trip I’ve made, I’ve always looked forward to coming back home.

1. Reason for going abroad is to earn a living where your efforts are more or less paid appropriately.
2. Philippines is still home, and will be going back in time.
3. Quite happy here in Hong Kong. So easy and cheap to go back home. There are ticket deals now that only costs you 10,000 pesos round trip.
Peace and order situation is excellent, healthcare services too.

What made you decide to work abroad and where?
and do you still intend to go back and why?

What made you decide to work abroad and where?
I am currently based in Frankfurt, Germany. I moved here because the offer was good; I thought it would be good for my career; and I was young and single.
What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why? Same answer as above. Yes, in 2009, I (along with my husband and 2 kids) are going back to live and work in the Philippines. The yearly trek back home for Christmas just was not enough for all of us. Plus, I had a good offer to repatriate so, we’re all taking the plunge and heading back home for good soon.
Are you happy where you are now? In a way, yes.

* What made you decide to work abroad and where?
Hindi ako nag-decide to work abroad. Andito pa rin ako sa lupang hinirang.
Now, since not all of my readers are Overseas Filipino Workers:
* What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why?
Hindi nga ako umalis eh. Ang kulit!
Intend to go back? Go back saan? Eh andito lang ako!
And finally, this question:
* Are you happy where you are now?
Happiness is in the heart of the beholder. Happy ako dito kahit mahirap. God provides our needs. That’s good enough…kaysa hiwa-hiwalay ang myembro ng pamilya. Parang tingting yan…pag nag-iisa, mahina; pag sama-sama, kayang-kaya. Bow.

thanks for the new word, “anak nang foto” ha ha ha!
pilitin mong mag-ipon pare.
Basahin mo dito: http://reynaelena.com/?p=209

@fibski,
canada is a great country and they seem to be easy on accepting immigrants. i’ve got relatives from mississauga to toronto and even my best friend is from there as well. the other thing though is your lifestyle in manila versus what it’s gonna be when you go to canada. will it be the same? there’s no question that education in canada is better that home, although, there are a good number of international schools in manila that are really competitive - that is, if you can afford them, you know what i mean. but it seems that migrating is not really the thing that consumes your mind and i could read between the lines that you seem to be happy and contented.

To ALL, thanks for the response, I hope more OFWs and immigrants responds to this question. But it seems to me that we are ALL successful in what we had become.
Like Arman said, “happines is how you perceive it”, And C5, “it’s in the heart of the beholder”.
But the fact that most (if not all) of us have gotten what we want (find a well paying job outside the Philippines) to me, that’s success and happiness is wanting what you get.

What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why?
And finally, this question:
* Are you happy where you are now?
pero bakit pa ako aalis?…kasi gusto kong malaman ang buhay outside pinas…if not, it’s just like a candy that i was not able to lick and taste….and by that time sana pag nagawa ko na yun, i can go back to where i belong anytime i want to.
yun lang po…^_^

- What made you decide to work abroad and where?
It happened when my mother’s cousin visited us and gave gifts, etc. This is a peculiar act for an OFW, I guessed. From then on, I thought that working abroad is a cool thing. The place I wished to go at that time was in the middle east. But after 3 years working in an audit firm, overseas opportunity knocked at my door and soon I was flying to Africa.
- What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why?
I was just barely 24 yrs old when I left Philippines: I thought it was a career wise- move to improve my profesional skills abroad.
Definitely yes!. I will still go back to Philippines. Pinas is my country and probably after more years of working away from home I will be back and stay finally like a migratory bird that find its final destination.
- Are you happy where you are now?
No. but, I won’t be happy either if I go back to Philippines. Happiness is not simply choosing the place you stay. It is the contentment of your heart and mind.
[Reply]
-what made me decide to work abroad and where?
it’s always been the money thing for me, as well as the career advancement. i could earn four to five times more here in singapore. and though i don’t have any pressing obligations in the philippines (like family to feed, children to send to school), the money i earn here gives me the freedom to travel, to speed up on my savings for the future, and to help out with other family expenses.
-what made me decide to leave the Philippines and do i still intend to go back and why?
again, i left the Philippines to earn a lot. why would anyone leave family and friends, and crazy chaotic manila, if not to earn more?
i do intend to go back, probably when i’m retiring and too old to bother myself with the country’s situation. right now, i have too much angst and am bewildered by what’s happening to the country, so baka mainis lang ako.
-are you happy where you are now?
yes. because singapore is not that far away from manila, and i’ve made a life, and have good friends here. ask me that in a year or two when i’ll probably be in the US, and i won’t know the answer yet. ![]()

you remind me of my niece from a second couzin. she’s a nurse here in philadelphia who just moved from florida.
many years ago, she’d marvel at how we dress and eat at fancy restaurants in manila (according to her) and she said, from that time on, she had this dream of following us here in philadelphia. it got stuck in her brain that all she does was how to get here. she was soooo happy when indeed she landed as one of the topnotchers of the nursing board and got her.

@ays,
why would anyone leave family and friends, and crazy chaotic manila, if not to earn more? - Definitely ays, I agree.
actually, that was the same reason why I went back to the States after living in Manila in 2005 because the best salary i could get was Php60,000 a month and get this, i was interviewed at makati bus club. no offense to them, but they know why i did not accept the job, simply because, i be in negative he he he

-What made you decide to work abroad and where?
My mom and I had a 4 years agreement in college. Whether tapos or not lipad ako pa Kuwait. So here I am earning my keep. I said, 1 year lng mag iipon ako at uuwi din. Four years later i’m still here, with still no savings and found myself sending my siblings to college. Waaaaaaahh.
-what made me decide to leave the Philippines and do i still intend to go back and why?
Whenever I’m asked with this question, SANCTUARY comes to mind. I’m going crazy sa Pinas, what with all the showbiz real and reel going around, it’s a wonder kokonte lng ang mental hospital natin. The highlights of my working year here in Kuwait is whenever I plan my Pinas vacation. Kahit 2 weeks lng bakaxon, I plan and psyched myself for 2 months. So yes I intend to go back and go to school etc. There’s no place like home, although naskwat na bahay namin.
-are you happy where you are now?
In a way yes. But i’d be more happier kung ililipat nila ang Makati dito sa Kuwait. Waaaaaahh. Inggit ako sa 10 grand round trip flight. Kainis. See, there’s more room for “I could be more happier”.
Galing mo talaga dakilang Reyna. Thought inducing chuva ka. Bow.

I was forced to take up nursing. The chances of a fresh grad RN of being a “regular” nurse are slim. I’ll stay here in the Philippines.
[Reply]
Hi Jen, so you mean, are you outside of the Philippines working at the moment? Ano ang work mo ngayon?
[Reply]
What made you decide to work abroad and where?
I am a regular employee in the Philippines that was just 4 months ago,sa isang malaking Telecom company don,di ko na imention hehe,I work as a Computer/Data Center Operator,ok naman, and the usual work sa pinas, talagang sulit ang sueldo mo,mdami talagang trbaho, wala naman akong reklamo sa work, since I know ito ang bread and butter ko, kaso I still don’t have my own house and my 2 kids is just starting to enter their schooling, ayoko naman silang tipirin sa education, kasi that is the best that I can give them, yon naman wife ko is just a contractual employee sa isang Government Agency, but good thing is malapit lang ang work don sa tinitirhan namin, but when my father died last year, and since ako lang ang panganay sa aming 3 magkakapatid, I have no choice but to make us of our company’s Bereavement Loan privilege, syempre kailangan kasi yong isang brother ko is still studying pa ng kanyang Law at yong isang sister ko naman ay hindi pa din stable sa work nya at may sarili na din family. So I decided to avail of the Bereavement Loan, para mabigyan ko ng marangal na libing ang father ko,that was August of 2006,kaso medyo mabigat, don ko naramdaman na lumiit na yong Take Home pay ko,halos eksakto na lang talaga sa pang-araw araw namin,eh nag-iisip na nga ako kasi 2 na sa kids ko ang mag sabay na mag school, hangga’t maari sana eh sa private school ko sila ipapasok kasi yon naman ang talagang pangarap ng isang magulang sa kanilang anak eh,tapos medyo ang laki na din kasi talaga ng hirap namin sa Father namin, biruin mo 3 years namin na inalaagan ang Father namin before he died, kasi 3x din kasi sya na stroke,on the 3rd time , hindi na sya sinuwerte, mahal na mahal ko father ko kasi sya mismo nag tiis sa abroad sa Saudi working as accountant for almost 20 years. Pero tapos na yon, just because of some monetary reason lang talaga ang reason ko for working abroad kasi sa pinas, mukhang malabo na akong makakuha pa ng sueldo na katulad dito, buti na lang nga at 4 months ago napunta ako dito sa Singapore at least nitong enrollment, natuwa naman ako at sabay ko ng na enroll ang 2 anak ko sa isang maayos na private school.
What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why?
US or Canada where some of my relative are already living.
Are you happy where you are now?
[Reply]
Wow! Di pa ako tapos writing the story and then you had this. This would help. Am sure the readers here would be amused - as in - ano kayang sinasabi ni Reyna?
Sinag, you’re a good kid to your father, a good brother to your family and a good father to your kids. I will not be surprised if one of these days your get lucky. It all just follows the same straight line - get mo ko? The “straight line” being that you’re such a good person in your heart and in your soul. I could see if from your writings. I mean, I don’t read writings like C5, but I could feel you from your post.
And to serve your father at a time that he needs it most, that’s a privilege kid. That’s is something special. Sabi mo mahirap? Hindi dong. He’s probably all smiles with you with what you have done.
It’s interesting because you seem to follow the OFW Story about Dad’s Little Girl, because ikaw naman eh yong Dad’s Son. Your kids will be very proud of you.
Tingnan mo achievement mo, in a very short period of time, nasa private school na mga anak mo, but one thing though, you should never EVER forget to save SINAG. EVER! I can understand giving the best to our kids. Heck! Ganyan din ako. I sent my niece to an International School in Ortigas - pucha grabe ang tuition!
But my point is, wag sobra Sinag, unahin mo ang konting savings because you never know when it will rain again. And sometimes when it rains? It pours.

On business?
Take if from me. Isang tanga. Na di matuto-tuto. It will be a bad decision to put up a business if you are not the one running the business. So, erase that from your memory. Save ka lang and then when you’re ready - go home - put a business and manage it like crazy. I mean, YOU manage it. Not your relatives or anyone else.
On pinoys?
I love pinoys back home at kahit na saan, kaso nga we are not perfect. Dala kasi nang kahirapan and pagka ignoramus nang pinoy about what kind of life we lead outside of the Philippines. Dala na rin nang mga kayabangan natin. Uuwi kasi tayo, painglis inglis na bali-balikwa, spend ever ever, so nagtataka tuloy ang mga kapatid nating naiwan thinking na ginapala at ginapiko ang limpak limpak na salapi sa labas nang pinas that’s why they treat us that way. Lahat kasalanan natin at nila.
On budget airfares?
Maswerte kayo, malapit lang kayo sa Pinas. My friend in Singapore, he goes home every month. Sana, I could find a job anywhere near Manila.
Finally, congratulations to you ang your family!

Ako ay kasalukuyang ngtatrabaho as Life insurance agent sa isang Canadian based company dito sa Pilipinas. Or pag nagretire na kayo?
I am not doing this to sell insurance to you guys, (but if you may want to I’m just here hehehe) Alam ko ang hirap nang mawalan ng kaagapay lalo na kung sudden change of situation and if you don’t have any means to continue living your lifestyle. Kaya habang maaga pa, maging aware kayo na mag-invest sa life insurance kasi ang pagbabayad ng life insurance premium ay para ka lang naghuhulog sa paluwagan, kahit sabihin mong may insurance ka na sa kumpanyang pinapasukan mo, once you stop being employed, your insurance stops also.
I hope this comment helps in a way ![]()

Reynaelena, ang cute ng blogsite mo. Very helpful and inspiring, and despite the “virtual-ness” of it all, I can feel the community spirit, pinoy na pinoy, hehe.
What made you decide to work abroad and where?
My friends and co-teachers have gone to work in the US, so I believe that once I put my heart to it, I’ll get there, too. Sayang din kasi ang opportunity to earn big and invest, di ba?
What made you decide to leave the Philippines and do you still intend to go back and why?
Andito pa rin ako, ha, pero I really plan on working abroad. The good thing is, wala naman daw age limit na naka-set, sabi nung mga nagbalik-bayan na friends ko.
Practical reasons lang. Soon, I’ll want to have a family of my own and I want my family to enjoy the best that life has to offer. The fear of getting married to someone who’ll turn out to be irresponsible or weak (you never know, based on stories from those who have married such men) is there, too. Of course, I’d like to have and keep my family whole just like the family I grew up in, but I also know that I can never be a martyr of a wife. So I’d like to prepare for single-motherhood din. Sigurista ba? Hehe. Kawawa rin ang future children ko who will have a lot of potentials if they will be limited by lack of money, di ba?
Self-declared sirena wanna-be ako eh, kaya kung makakapagtrabaho man ako abroad, babalik at babalik din ako, to live the life of a sirena once in a while. Saka, gusto kong malibot at ma-enjoy ang ganda ng Pilipinas, before I get too old to do so.
Are you happy where you are now?
Yes. But I’m also starting to feel the pressure of growing old AND wise. I can’t live for myself forever, I need to prepare to live for others (my future family) din.

Hi Reynz!
1. I went abroad for academic and personal growth. Honestly, money has never been my motivation to leave the Philippines. I swear, tamaan ka man ng kidlat! LOL! And given the sorry state of research climate we have, I had no choice but to take all the opportunities in being able to do first class research in industrialized countries. Do I intend to go back? Eventually yes, kapag nanalo na ako ng Nobel Prize at sikat na sikat na to the extent na pwede nang kumandidato for president of the pelepens!
2. Happiness to me is a state of mind. So kahit saan siguro ako mapadpad, if I choose to be happy, I will be happy. ![]()

Money. Pera. Datung. Anda. Para sa pamilya.

Are you happy now?

eh si Kuya Gabby, yes bagsak ang real estate (pero dito sa SF, hot item pa rin ang houses) kaya uwi siya sa Pinas, kung ako sa kanya nag sales clerk na muna siya bago ora oradang umuwi either sa Neiman o kaya Saks 5th, wala pa siyang sakit ng ulo and you never know he can be management level with his looks
