These people are just envious. They don’t know your caliber. If you will just lay down your card, I’m sure these people would bow on their knees.

Ms. Reynz, you?re not a typical Pinoy guy who got the chance to go to the US, went to George Washington Univ, finished an MBA at Temple U and landed a really cool corporate job although you?re currently unemployed. I?m sure, knowing that Fitz is from UP, that could be one source of envy: he is stuck there, while here, you go places. I could be wrong. And yet I’m always right!

I mean I’m not against that Fitz guy since I don’t even know him. Darn I don’t even heard of him because I go around the whole blogosphere very often. You are famous and these people wants a piece of your popularity. Salve just linked your blog on Inquirer Blogs and that I think is one of the reason why you should be considered famous, hence this smear campaign. OMG, even Hilary Clinton Blogs linked your post. I mean what more can you ask for?

In the same vein, in defense of bluepanjeet and Cat, they just wrote a very scholarly take on awards which I think should not be taken personally. After all blogs are personal opinions. If they have quoted that Fitz guy some way, he should be happy and grateful instead because they have noticed a non-existent and unknown blogger like him… and yes I’m talking about fitz.

You see the backlash of these awards is that they make people humble and at the same time they make others bloated. Paradoxically those who are humbled are those people who really deserve to win the awards. The bloated people are just those who continue to convince themselves that they deserve the award even though the whole world knows that they don’t.

But the total irony is this: You rose from the ashes of a typical provincial Barrio, while they grew up in Urban Manila. Talking about breeding eh? It’s their minus not yours.

Pissed be with you. I come in FISH. May nagbait daw kasi. hehehe.

I do not know these people except for karla redor who was our youngest buddy then in our community of bloggers.

I have always maintained my independence of mind, never patronizing anybody, not beholden to any gods or celebrities in the internet because I think I should be objective when I express an observation . When I blog, I see to it that I have basis. Force of habit of being an auditor…there should be supporting papers/ evidences to back up statements.

As you will agree with me reynz, auditors will always look for conformity with standards. And this is what I have been meowing about… conformance with the set rules/criteria or eligibility requirements or whatever they may call it.

These are not preconceived opinions.

It is not being smart. It is showing them how to make awards credible.

My position has been very clear, i refused to be associated with some blog awards that are lacking credibility and are more seen as “may the best friends win” types.

These people are justifying cliques.

TO clique or not to clique. True, there is no problem with clique. Cliques are everywhere. But when you change the rules of the game like expanding/changing categories to accommodate or assure the victory of some friends in the clique, then that
is another issue. Assuming that it is expected from cliques to be working for the advantage/promotion of their members, then don’t flaunt it in social networks clandestinely and at the expense of other bloggers.

They should bring it to the open like what you do and what I do.

I hate it when people say that ” says try kaya nila sila mag-organize kung di sila maloka :-D.

Why, do these people know us personally? Did they ever entertain the idea that we’ve been there that is why we have the guts to criticize them. Did they ever wonder that it may be the reason why we can afford to criticize. Do they know the word TEAM SPIRIT and not the I am the best so follow me culture?

Did they ever wonder that we are shaking that Filipino culture na makaraos lang pwede na. That pwede na attitude makes them come up with lists of blogs that are not even eligible to join as long as they can boast that there are several participants.

It is different when you sponsor awards to promote your own blog as in social climbing because that is one strategy in drawing traffic. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE blogger-SPONSOR SHOULDERS THE PRIZE MONEY. That is a popular strategy recommended by some expert bloggers.

It is also different when a group promotes awards giving as prestigious with all the sponsorships and media coverage and with Philippine in tbe awards title. It has to strictly observe the criteria and not the my-best-friends-win kind of award.

With the “my-best-friends-win” scheme, it encourages ass kissing, patronage of people, emergence of
powerful gods worshipped by new bloggers para sila rin manalo in the future. The results become predictable.SO VERY PREDICTABLE.

Kinukumpetensiya ka nga nila pagkareyna and at the end of the day, mas maganda raw sila saiyo? hekhekhek.

So the failure of coming up with the list of the official winners hours after the awarding does not indicate trouble within the organizers for being disorganized?

Again, may you have WORLD PIECE.

i won’t disagree with what Prudence said about it. it’s as old as any oldest culture that we know, yet i don’t understand when she says “It’s just that their notion of clique and what’s cliqueish is a bit frustrating” - my point and I will always slam it wherever entry i go was that, it now seemed to me that the rules were made to make it easier on their friends, their clique and not the rest of the “cliques”. what’s my notion? what their notion? i have no idea what she’s talking about. i’ve been commenting on the selection process the very bottom of their awarding chorva. had they worked out that issue maybe their awarding would have been more believeable.

alas even me? moved to OFW??? halller!!! what gives???

they can’t gain any credibility on their awards by convincing people when from the very start the selection was riddled with ??? and for as long as the bloggers perception is “May the best friend wins” why do they insist that “it’s either our way of the hi-way?” coz the winners have already been decided the comelec way??? any sane “BEST SCHOOLS MIND” would have worked on some risk management measures already to preempt exactly what they’re going through right now. Hallerrr!

Hi, Cath. I sure hope you’re not generalizing with your sweeping statements. Not all bloggers who organize, volunteered, or participated in the Blog Awards have the mentality that you think of.

And I am irked that you think that the organizers are out to award their best friends. I don’t actually know who the majority of the winners are and have not read their blogs, and I personally know most of the volunteers and organizers. I think the judges (and they are composed of respectable people, like MLQ3) have done quite a good job this year.

Why was the list of winners incomplete?

Then all of a sudden, another partial list was released with some more awards which are not listed in the Philippine Bloggers Award.

Now who is resorting to ad hominems? Why can’t they answer the issues raised as to the non-conformance to the eligibility requirement?

Is someone listening or reading to answer the issue or are just brave enough only in plurk and twitter.

A: These people (and i mean, the cliquesh group) has turned my 2 blog entries about the PBA into a personal fight and I refuse to stoop to that level. My arguments as well as yours were essentially directed at the selection process. A dozen bling-bling does not justify the “it’s our way or the highway” attitude. For as long as they call themselves the “Philippines” chorvaloo ever, I have as much right as a stakeholder as the next airhead in their group. If they can’t answer our issues, I could only surmise that indeed “May the best friends win” was right after all because they have no interest of making them fair. That my opinion Cat.

The best-friends-win scheme is so shallow that last minute of judging they move the blogs in the categories where no one among the members of the clique will be competing head on.

as to the best network blogger, someone has to explain to me the rationale of giving this award.

One, the network for which the blogger is writing for is owned not by the blogger but by the media.

Remember eligibility rule: it should be owned by a blogger and not by a media or organization.

Two, if ever there is one body that should award this, it is the meadia network itself but it won’t since the network bloggers are being compensated monthly for specified number of posts a week.

Should the award be based on the number of the networks they write for?

I don’t want to ruin my day with these people. They are non-existent to me. As you can see I never bothered visiting their blogs. What’s important is I’m having a great time in blogging. It’s not my fault that they are sensationalizing everything. They have the choice to ignore us, but instead they made a big deal out of this. Sino ngayon ang hayok sa Pansin? Di ko man lang ata nababangit o napapansin yang mga yan.

I don’t want to stoop down to their level because I know what my parents and mentors have taught me. My values are higher than theirs. My chosen responsibility in the blogosphere is to be a critic. If people are bashing me or plurking behind my back and thinks I’m haughty, well it just shows that I’m an effective critic. Kung hindi, they won’t even mind what im writing about– if I’m really nothing to them (basic logic). The mere fact that they are pissed, its because maybe there is a truth in what I have written. So will this hoopla stop me from writing and criticizing what I see is wrong? hell no! I’m more motivated now than before, see the traffic surge?

my blog will go on as usual. One of the best lessons I learned in life is to ignore charlatans who doesn’t give a damn to change for the benefit of the greater good.

Ako, Im not affected by all of these people. Haha goodluck na lang senyo. May karma din yan. believers or non believers alike. Life is mysterious and sometimes Divine Justice comes the least you expect it.

God Bless to all those who hate us. My prayers are for you. I assure you that all of my priest, seminarians, and nun friends are praying for you right this very moment.

what can i say - tumpak ka sa effective criticism, otherwise, i don’t think these people would not resort to character slinging and everything to a point of even treating you with irrelevancy in their plurks pero wala namang ma-ibanat to all the issues that we raised.

i have some pretty valid issues with this ridiculous selection. yet, all i hear from the burds of the same feathers - magtayo na lang daw tayo nang blog awards.

i am beginning to think maybe we should! we shall call it - THE PATATAS BLOG AWARDS.

simply, the Great Filipino Divide. This is what I found out in all of these mudslinging. It’s real and it’s existing.

Cath, I’m not saying Jayvee is innocent but I don’t think that just because Juan Mandaraog blogs for b5media and that Jayvee is the b5media Tech editor means that Jayvee unnecessarily used his influence to affect that particular award. Also, the nature of the award implies that it is exempt from the media-owned requirement, but I agree that the organizers should have spelled this out clearly.

As for the rationale of having the award in the first place, Filipinos are making their mark in various blog networks such as b5media and Splashpress Media. Such a Special Award (not a Regular Award) recognizes those bloggers who wouldn’t be eligible for the regular awards because they don’t own the network blog that they write for.

These network bloggers have blogs of their own aside from the blogs owned by the network.

So pray tell me, what’s the basis of choosing the best network blogger ? Is it the number of network that they write for, the product or topic that they write about…i.e. health issues against technology, parenting versus games…etc.or their closeness to the organizing committee members.

The network blogger category is merely added to the special awards not the special awards created to accommodate this type of bloggers.

These issues would not have arisen if the board members did not use one yardstick for all and make exemptions which are not properly spelled out for every category.

I am disappointed that these people who pride themselves to be from the elite schools can not come up with mission, vision, rules, standards, procedures for one event that is held only once a year.

Don’t include the judges here in the finals because many of them have not even visited the blog of the finalists. Reyna ELena can attest to that based on his visitors, page views and hits statistics for the period of screening up to the awards night.

The judges merely relied on what were furnished to them on the belief that these are already the finalists, duly chosen, screened and verified by the committees. Are there even ad hoc committees to check the “About” and profile of the blogger-winner. The meat is in the screening.

It’s also presumptuous to say that the judges did not even visit the blogs. For instance, the 5 posts requirement (that Reyna is critiquing) is given via URL so the judges would definitely visit the blogs just to read those entries. It might be even safe to say that at least some of the judges even read other posts aside from those 5 submitted.

1. Do you know why I use sitemeter in all my blogs instead of those hits measuring websites? I am not only after the number of visitors and the page views but most importantly, the referrers, where they are coming from and how long they stayed in my website. Even if someone use google reader, still they would be tracked. Reyna Elena as a finalist, I think was not visited by the judges.

2. You want me to believe that these judges really visited
all the finalists’ blogs?
Not with Manolo who was abroad for two weeks, so busy with his MBA and his commitment that his website was turned into a forum of mish-mash issues for lack of updated entry.

3. Have you ever sat as a judge in the finals? Have you ever feel the frustration why it is difficult to select the winner because you are pressed to choose from a bunch of finalists who just made it to the last leg of competition because the “screeners” screwed ups in their jobs?

4. Can the busy judges, honestly tell the bloggers that they really sat down to visit each in every blog and tell me why they blunder in choosing as winners those who did not meet the requirements?

How could you as a pinoy blogger be out of touch that in this whole discussion of PBA?s great blunder is the revelation that a Great Filipino Bloggers Divide exist and it?s a reality? I could plaster these so-called elite bloggers conversations to justify what i said about US and THEM. This whole notion that bloggers come from the THAT SCHOOL makes the rest of the bloggers as coming from ?OTHERS?. I’ve never judged at the PBA before, but I did talk to the some of the judges, including Manolo, during the first and this recent Blog Awards. They do NOT judge ALL of the finalists. For example, I don’t think Manolo’s would really want to judge the tech blog category, right?

So yes, they do not visit “each [and] every blog”. The screeners may have not done their job properly, pero grabe naman ang pang-aalaska mo. It’s bordering on malicious.

I’m all too aware that the Pinoy blogosphere (and I’m using the term blogosphere loosely) is not one big happy family. The various controversies last year made me painfully aware of that so I’m definitely not lost with reality.

Also, I’m aware (though not that well-informed) of your huge spat with Noemi last year. I just hope that that did not figure into your beef with your original 5-post PBA blog post.

I am happy that you agree with me with my observations but i am offended by your use of the word of “alaska’ and malicious”.

I believe that our exchange of opinion is on a higher level than those of plurkers who merely dismiss the attempt of some people to crticize constructively as “inggit”.

iba ako kung umalaska. nang-iinsulto ako na the people would not realize what hit them.

i have no beef with the organizers. i am criticizing their output. in a work environment, it is just telling them, your work sucks, revise it.

i do not affiliate myself with any group.

if i am too outspoken, fault it in my upbringing and self-confidence that i could not be intimidated by anybody and i could howl a protest if i think there is something wrong.

Pray tell me what is the malice?

Am I not speaking the truth?

Will it not help the organizers in the future not to tread in the same path.

i have been controversial that i was enshrined by some UP studes in the museum of hoaxes. don’t get me wrong. i have nothing against UP (I was a UP student in the doctorate when i left the Phils, subtle ba ang pagyayabang), four of my siblings are from UP in fact they are celebrating the centenial in oct. So i do not need the controversy anymore.

Traffic? When i was inundated by 50,000 visitors in one day, my website crashed. So I don’t write so much popular traffic and i do not engage in debate in my blog.dito na lang kay reyna…mas mahal ang bayad niya sa webhosting. kaya ang bandwidth. hahaha

It is unwritten law that if you come from schools with good reputation for graduates, expectation is also high.

Sorry to say this but when you have been screened from the time you were admitted and have struggled to keep your enrollment in a prestigious university, would people not expect better graduates than those who are paying expensive tuition fees just so they can get the diploma ?

I know you’re not the type who’s banking on getting anything out of this issue, except maybe that the organizers will do better next time. I’ve been actually aware of your blog since 2003; I knew that you were blogging even before I started blogging in 2004. So I know that you don’t care about traffic or fame or whatever.

The thing is, the awards is still in its birthing pains and I personally see that a lot has improved this year compared to last years. (There’s actually a helluva lot more controversy about last year’s awards than this year’s.) So it seems a bit of a poor form to always point out the bad things without acknowledging the hard work and the good stuff. The organizers and especially the volunteers find it insulting when you say their work is poor and “raos lang.” Constructive criticism does not work that way; you just turn the people you want to help off.

Also, to impute that the organizers were out for their own selfish interest is the one thing I’m peeved about. You might have grown cynical and I might still be naive, but I personally know that the organizers took the necessary steps to avoid conflicts of interest. For example, One of the blogs that I run completely on my own was disqualified because its domain name was still registered under the one of the organizers (I’m still in the process of transferring ownership) even though I’m not an organizer nor even a volunteer.

Anyway, I guess we can just agree to disagree on some points, right? Thanks for the conversation (and to Reynz for letting us use his comments space).

thank you eugene aka seav. there, we have proven to you that were civilized people and would resort to ad rem than ad hominems when properly confronted.

i can understand your passion to defend the body and i admire your guts for coming out because you are a winner in the philippine blog awards and could also have volunteered in the event.

let me just say that my criticisms when taken noted could make recipients proud of their awards.

No one would like to be acknowledged as the best among the mediocre because the awarding body failed to articulate important information and screening process was not properly carried out that would minimize doubts on the credibility of the winners.

To me, the word is disgusting.

I read the links and now I have to change my statement about best friends winning the award. I am changing it to best-friends and volunteers awards. Reyna ELena’s sumtin’ for sumtin’. From what I have gathered is “You volunteer and you are guaranteed of special awards”. Is that the reason why it took them a day before the final list of the winners were published in their own website. Meron pa bang burdahan, gantsilyuhan at tagpian moments bago inilabas ang mga para sa volunteers.

Last year, same thing happened. Some volunteers also took home the awards.

I did not create the noise last year so patuloy pa rin pala ang raket na ito? Invite the volunteers gratis and give them awards. Funny. no incredible and disgusting.

And some plurkers accuse us of being malicious when we criticize their awarding body.

Even Accusing me that I do not know who the organizers are.hahaha Nasa website naman yan. Nasa incorporation papers naman yan. Ako pa? Some people treat other people tanga dahil akala nila kagaya nila. In this age of technology, information is just at the tip of your fingers esp. if you are using a broadband internet.

@Empress, *sigh*. Ok, go on feeling “api”.

In the first place, he was not talking about your comment here (the one with “Weird, hindi ko nabasa ang award na ito sa site nila before”). He was talking about an anonymous comment on *his* blog where the commenter said that his award was a “joke”. So there was no “misquoting” going on: he was not quoting you at all.

Because of that, I don’t think he should apologize to you in the first place. It was simply you who misinterpreted his plurk instead of him misquoting you.

Nevertheless, he apologized to you twice for causing you inadvertent distress. And you still don’t accept his apology? And even implying it’s insincere? You’re already given an arm and you’re clamoring for the leg as well?

First of all, Gibbz Cadiz, who won the best Culture & Arts Blog Award, is actually one of the lifestyle section editors of a broadsheet. (And his blog, which is related to his work, really fits best in the Culture & Arts category, not the News & Media.)

Second, the Mar Roxas blog the quoted commenter refers to is not owned nor operated by Mar Roxas or his staff. In addition, not all bloggers/organizers/volunteers/guests/judges are necessarily going to vote for Mar just because he graced the PBA.

Unlike other people here, some just raise issues for the sake of raising issues.
