Please Note: The first part of this entry is this one: Philippine Blog Awards Chorva. There is a follow-up entry also: Jester-in-exile entry is full of lies.
Here’s my response to the Juvenile Economist:
Juvenile Economist,
First, thank you for visiting and congratulations on your new blog.
JE, I expect economists, juveniles or experienced, to be well-versed in reading comprehension. After all, economics takes a great deal of analysis and, well, ahh reading. I’m pretty sure, you understood my opinion. After all, I wrote it in plain understandable language. But i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and explain it in English.
Here’s my opinion on this one JE:
Nominees should just stay as that. Nominees. Judges should just stay as that. Judges. You mix the responsibilities of the two together, it won’t work. Clash of objectives. The two will fight. Just like what Kutz had said in her comment, what the nominees think to themselves as the best, will probably come out as “beast” in so far as the judges are concerned. Bottom line, the judges rule. Not the nominees. So, why ask the nominees to pick? Let me bring Cat’s comment again. If the judges don’t have the time to review the blogs and read the entries, why come up with the awards?
Again, as an economist or aspiring economist – I’m sure you’ve ran across this one in your business subjects – ETDBW. Look for it. It works pretty well in business. I’m sure it will work in a situation where you want an awards body to have a lot of entries, so you’d have a lot of choices. Just one way to gain credibility. Like what Leo had said in his comment, why make it difficult? What’s the point? I could only think that:
- the organizing committee are probably pretty lazy with what they are supposed to do because everyone of them are busy with their blogging career
- the organizing committee probably refuses to take responsibility by giving the selection to the nominees because they’re afraid to take the heat if they make a mistake in judging. At least, if a blogger did not win, they could always blame the blogger – “Hey, you were the one who sent us the entry!”
- its possible that the organizing committee just have no clue on what to do and just came up with some awards because of some personal gains. read: they probably have some businesses or sponsors and making this as platform for their marketing objectives
- all of the above
Judging a blogger as best of this and best of that, especially with the criteria set by the Philippine Blog Awards Organizing Committee as let’s say “Best personal blog” takes a lot more than reading 5 entries unless of course you’re pretty well connected with the organizers. Trust me, that’s like a no-brainer isn’t it? If you ask me, my personal opinion says that they should just rather change their awards name to: The Philippines Best Five Blog Entries.
- “The Philippines Best Five Blog Entries” is owned and patented by Miss Chuvaness and Miss Cat. Anyone who uses this without their express authority ay gugulpihin ni Malen at kakalmutin nang kuting.”
- I’m pretty so I’ll win this award. Unfortunately, I’m not “user-friendly”, so I’ll lose this award. Hehehe

I would like to apologize if my comment was offensive (enough to merit a post on your blog).
The Philippine Blog Awards is just on its second year. There are surely lots of kinks to be ironed out. However, I think Abe Olandres and the other heads have done a great job in rallying the Philippine Blog Community.
As for the nomination process, the 5 posts were asked in order to best approximate the quality and content of the nominees’ blogs. Anyone would find it taxing to read 300+ posts. Multiply that by, say, 10 categories with 10-20 nominees each and you’d have an even bigger problem.
Now, the committee can just randomly select a number of posts. However, that would not be a fair approximation of your skill and prowess in blogging.
As for the prize, there’s a trophy to be had. More importantly, it would generate traffic to your site (which translates to money if you have ads).
I think you should submit your five best posts. It’s the least you could do for the people who troubled themselves to nominate you.
Again, my apologies to you and your supporters.

i think the best way is to present the finalist with a short description why it was nominated for the blog category so that readers can have an idea why they qualified, not just a list.
and then on the single post category, let the readers nominate what they think is the best work of the blogger and then have it reposted on the official blog awards site para kitang kita kung bakit sya nanominate hindi yung nominado mismo ang pipili.
pag five ang isusubmit na post tapos single post category di ba parang sala naman?
the nominees should be well presented in a way that even the readers could judge for themselves who the real winner is (at least for them).

Oks lang yan JE, I admire your candor in speaking your mind. The blogging community needs people like you who are not afraid to speak up.
Anyway, in my opinion, any award-giving body will always be subject to criticism because it is made up of people. These people can have faults, principles, beliefs and reputations that others may find unworthy of their support.
But don’t get me wrong, neither side is right nor wrong. All these is just a matter of choice. A conscious decision on who you want to be associated with or not.
Parang buhay lang natin ‘yan na pinipili natin kung sino ang gusto nating maging kaibigan.

The last time i read about abe olandres is, i missed his endorsement for this event. i wonder why.
Many of those who won last year did not display the logo and their “trophy” of the award in their blog.
i wonder why.
I appreciate the efforts of the organizers but in order for a project to last and to establish credibility, it should be open for reactions, violent or not to incorporate suggestions to eliminate suspicions of biases.
The rationalization that these organizers are also too busy to read the blogs is not acceptable for award giving bodies.
Blogs’ templates are tweaked for easy browsing. Categories are in the sidebars…archives are available.
If the judges of the oscar, the famas, the palanca and other competition which requires judges’ personal attention will just rely on the “praise releases” of the agents or by the nominees themselves, the winner will be the ones who gave good reviews about their own.
Last year, the winners come mostly from the organizers’ group themselves. I wonder why.

Of course reynz can win. But it was his decision not to comply with the awards committee’s rules and forego his chance to be an official nominee.
Just to clarify, the association that I’m saying is not the burden of the awards committee but by the nominated blog / blogger.
For example, if I was nominated as best blog by an awards committee whom I believe are composed of good for nothing bloggers who are just trying to make money. Then I wouldn’t accept the nomination either because I don’t want to be associated with these kind of people.
In his case, reynz believes that the PBA rules are wrong. He also said other things about the organizers. This is his opinion. And this is the reason why he made a conscious decision not to participate and I respect him for that.
Personally, I believe that his arguments are valid. Why judge a blog solely on 5 entries when a blog is really more than that. It is indeed a limited criteria. Nevertheless, the organizers must have their own reasons for doing this. By voicing out our opinion regarding this rule, we can perhaps help them make next year’s awards better.
But regardless of who gets nominated and who wins, it doesn’t necessarily mean that those blogs are the best. It is the best from the perspective of the judges and the awards committee. Whether we would accept that or not, is still our choice. But with a lack of any other blog awards with the same breadth as the PBA, then it’s inevitable that we will be subject to influence by their results.
To end on a related note, perhaps this is the reason why there are many award giving bodies for films – Oscars, Golden Globe, People’s Choice, etc. It’s because each one of them have different rules and made up of different people with different perspectives on what they believe is the best movie. The PBA is just another award giving body. Whether we believe their credibility or not, it is our choice.

“What does it mean to win the BEST BLOG AWARDS chorva? Honestly, I don’t know. But in my opinion, it really depends on the judges definition of what “THE BEST” means.
If I will be the judge, my criteria will be very simple: it should be something that catches my interest and the interest of many. It’s something that will remain popular and will resonate with readers for years to come. Kelangan bang morally, grammatically and intellectually correct?
Because I am soo babaw, NOPE. Buti na lang hinde ako judge, else, my blog will be the winner. LOL.
it’s like winning the BEST PICTURE trophy sa FAMAS AWARDS. para masabi mong best piktyur sya…you have to watch the whole movie, you have to feel it and love it…and judge it base sa buong konsepto ng pelikula…kasama ang lahat ng technicalities….including the background music at costume design. Kesehodang panget ang acting ng ibang bida or forgettable ang ibang lines. You don’t say it’s the best movie kase gwapo ang bida, sikat or whatever.
Hinde nanalong best picture ang Inagaw Mo Ang Lahat Sa Akin ng dahil si Maricel Soriiano ang bida. *shucks, sooo jologs talaga, hahahah*

albeit your comment is quite mild and courteous yet reading between the lines one can’t help but notice your implicit hate with the queen.. Is this personal? hmm this is not the first time we saw such subtle sarcasm from you here on her blog.

The Philippine Blog Awards is just on its second year. There are surely lots of kinks to be ironed out.
Reynz – Exactly, so in other words, this whole awards drama was haphazardly done, you guys were unprepared. I don’t see it as truly rewarding bloggers. I see it the otherwise.
As for the nomination process, the 5 posts were asked in order to best approximate the quality and content of the nominees’ blogs. Anyone would find it taxing to read 300+ posts. Multiply that by, say, 10 categories with 10-20 nominees each and you’d have an even bigger problem.
Reynz – Again, the taxing problem and the best way to solve the problem is to let the nominees be the judge? Wrong. What you guys need to do is create a Selection Committee that is independent. Independent meaning, don’t just look at your friends and relatives blog. The Selection Committee should do “THE SELECTION” and not the nominees. If you can’t absorb and solve the problem which is inherent in this type of awards, why do the awards in a truly kalabasa way? I’m sure most of you are intelligent and are better able to come up with a rather, credible selection process of blogs whether you consider them as friends or enemies.
Now, the committee can just randomly select a number of posts. However, that would not be a fair approximation of your skill and prowess in blogging.
Reynz – Again, I think I answered this one already – you cannot judge a blogger based on 5 entries. I read your rules and it included the word “totality”, unfortunately, your “totality” is confined within the 5 entries or just the 1 entry. I don’t think one could justifiably make a rational decision based on just those very limited entries.
As for the prize, there’s a trophy to be had. More importantly, it would generate traffic to your site (which translates to money if you have ads).
Reynz – I agree. Count me out, I think I already have a respectable traffic. Besides, I blog according to my own wishes and caprices, grammar or no grammar, traffic or no traffic, awards or no awards but I must WIN badoodles best humor or else! Grrrr!
I think you should submit your five best posts. It’s the least you could do for the people who troubled themselves to nominate you.
Reynz – No, thank you, I thanked those who nominated me already. I am the nominee and your guys are supposed to independently select it yourselves and be the judge. I’ve pointed that out already. I look at who organized the awards body and from there, I know as to whether or not they are credible. They could use my criticism to improve their rules so they can be be more credible. Hahaha!
Again, my apologies to you and your supporters.
Reynz – You got nothing to apologize JE.

The rationalization that these organizers are also too busy to read the blogs is not acceptable for award giving bodies. –
Real funny talaga, but this was pointed out by JE dun sa taas. This essentially dries up the juice nung awards nila. If they find it very taxing to do bloghopping and do the selection and read blogs and understand bloggers Hahaha eh paano na? Hahaha!

Fitz:
First, bitter ang lola. Hehehe. I guess I don’t deserve some personal commendation from you for standing up against some of your friends. It’s ok Fitz Hahaha! If you were offended because I believe I truly had a point in my argument which you guys could really use to improve your judging procedures, that’s up to you. But I guess, considering that you guys are graduates of best schools na sabi nyo nga, I was expecting much better rules and judging procedures. I guess best does not equals best. I stand by my opinion that nominees stay as nominees and judges better do their job as that. Judge. Otherwise, I don’t see any point in bringing my 5 biggest kalabasa.
Second, sorry Fitz, I’m not a Yes person. My criticism as far as I am concerned is justifiable considering that you guys were using the word “Philippines” in your blog award. As Filipino, I own that word too you know. Believe it or not, you might have been very unhappy with my opinion, but if you look back several months from now, you should be happy that someone like me pointed out your mistakes.
Third, mukhang out of place naman ata ang comment mo about “All these is just a matter of choice. A conscious decision on who you want to be associated with or not. Parang buhay lang natin ‘yan na pinipili natin kung sino ang gusto nating maging kaibigan.”
We all have that choices who we want to be associated with and sometimes that should no longer be questioned oe explained or even proven. One should not take offense if another prefers not to be associated with someone. No explanations needed kasi baka personal na yon.
World Peace Fitz!

Reyna Elena (and Ely too): Though it may look like that I’m defending PBA, I am not. Neither am I part of their click. What I was trying to rationalize is their method of getting the five best posts.
I still think that getting a limited sample from a blog can approximate the blog’s worth — and that it is acceptable from a statistical point of view (though sample size should vary depending on the total number of blogs for one year). Sure, there are better ways to do things. Given the PBA’s time and resource constraints, I don’t think they have a choice. I think what they’re after is a structured framework that is sustainable (that they can do it every year) and resource efficient (that they can execute it with little financial and volunteer support).
I guess the word “nominee” is the culprit in this debacle. They could have said that “your blog is being considered for the Philippine Blog Awards,” and that to be considered for the short list of nominees, you must give a sufficient sample of your blog. Then again, we’d be going back to arguing that a sample (however large it may be) will be insufficient to judge a blog.
On a lighter note, I was considering posting a formal post in my blog as a reply to this entry of yours so I can at least get traffic and decrease bounce rates. I decided against the idea for the reason that this doesn’t fit well with my blog’s theme. Hehe.
So yeah, thanks for the plug. I look forward to sharing/arguing ideas with you in the future. You seem like a nice lady.
To avoid further creative banters like ““JE and friends best blog award”, I’ll stop commenting for now. Lets leave it at that (at least my contentions). May point din, I think, ang mga organizer. Sa Asian TV Awards, halimbawa, the TV stations are required to submit at least an episode of the TV programs (5 episodes kung isa siyang sitcom o soap opera). Ang mali lang ng mga organizer, binulaga ang mga “nominee” (I’m sure may idea sila kung sinu-sino papanalunin anyway). Sana sinabi na AGAD na blog entries ang i-submit at hindi lang ‘yung URL nila.

the asian TV awards is different because the awards are not meant to determine the Best TV Network. It only applies to the selected programs and productions and with these awards, the TV stations are not judged as the Best. Applied to blogs, you do not judge a blog by one or five entries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Television_Awards
in the Asian TV awards, the panel of judges meet closed door before the awarding and the results are audited by the price waterhouse.
i do not mean that they have to go to that extent but asking the judges to spend considerable time to read the blogs are really expected if they mean to award the best blog in different categories and not only one blog post entry to represent the whole blog.

i understand what you’re saying. the judges should do the judging themselves. but they can’t really go through each and every post. just as the voters for the emmy awards don’t watch each and every episode of every nominated show. what they do is they ask each show that would like to be considered for an award to submit their best episode(s).
ang mali ng awards committee is they should have asked the people nominating–from the very beginning–to submit not just a link to the blog they are nominating, but also the five best posts that they think best represent the blog. there’s room for improvement. world peace =)

vonjobi,
thank you for visiting. the reason “can’t really go through each and every post” is a totally unacceptable justification. we’ve all gone through this issue in the comments already.
but i do agree with your proposition, one way is for the nominee to submit the 5 best entries the blogger made, at least there’s a certain level of independence in there.
again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. that was a good one and hope they pick it up.
world peace! hahaha!

hello po! just a newbie blogger here but the discussions prompted me to put in my two-cents-worth on the topic. huli man daw at magaling, huli pa rin. hehehe.
i agree with ms reynz that 5 blog entries do not speak for the entire content of the blog itself. on the other hand, for the judges to sift through the entire blog itself is impossible as well.
but we must understand that pba is still in its early formation, “still learning to walk” so to speak and it is a given that glitches will abound. glitches that, in due time, will be ironed out eventually by the organizers and heck, even by the consolidated effort of the pinoy bloggers out there. two years’ running is not sufficient to judge an award-giving body’s reputation.
while one may not rule out the possibility of collusion or favoritism, as a lot have been hinting at (lutong makaw?), one must also accept the fact that in every award-giving body, despite the organizers’ best efforts, it is always impossible for everything to run smoothly and perfectly. hence, the cliched room for improvement.
so what is the best criterion to select the winners then? i choose the lesser of two evils, so to speak. i propose that organizers stick with the 5 best entries per blog but with an independent panel of judges to dissect the merits of the finalists’ entries. this is the only feasible standard to determine who will be the winners and in fact, such standard is being practiced in all award-giving bodies.
pba will eventually live up to its name, just give it some time. in fact, i find it remarkable that finally, an avenue to recognize those pinoy bloggers who have contributed much to the Internet blogosphere’s furtherance has been created albeit one that is still establishing a firm foundation. that’s still a nice start. we conquer the blogosphere today; tomorrow, world domination! lol.
my final say: award or no award, sana tuloi ang ligaya! ms reynz keep the laughter coming. dadalasan ko na pagtambay sau ngaun. hehehe.
