How do you write a SONA 2008 Reaction Paper?, Part 2

by Rainier on August 3, 2008

At this point, you should have already read: Part 1.

It’s really very easy to write a reaction paper, makinig kayo sa lola. As discussed dun sa Part 1, nag-kaka-iba lang sya sa BODY of your reaction paper. Now, if you are familiar doing a Book Review Report, then walang pinag-kaiba to sa Book Report.

So, where do you start?

1. Start by reading the SONA 2008. Saan pa nga ba. Wag Kislap. Or listen to it then take notes. A lot of notes. Ang haba eh.

2. As you read the SONA 2008, identify the topic being discussed. Por ejemplo, if it talks about money, it’s Economy. This way, you could easily see that she touched this topic and that topic and you’d know kung what topics were left out.

3.) When done, review the notes you made and see if you find some patterns of any kind.

If I am the one writing a reaction paper, I will write a reaction on the speech based on just two (2) factors:

1.) Coherence

Understand that she’s got a number of Cabinet Officials. These Officials know the state of their respective departments and everything. Essentially, I would have organized my speech according to how the Cabinet Officials presented their reports. Since these are all based on the programs and performances nang mga ginawa nang cabinet nya, I’d rate the speech, say by Transportation, Energy, Education, Science, etc., etc.. So, my report would start with someting like:

  • a.) “In my opinion, the speech was very well written and very well organized. She presented it in a very well organized manner according to blah, blah, blah, that could fully be understood blah blah blah eklavu chuvalais chorva chorva. Or”,

  • b.) I honestly need to calm down myself, because I would like to fire my bloody speech writer for such a blatantly dis-organized speech. I can’t imagine how they could not cover energy, religion, Paris Hilton, ek-ek-ek, chorva-chorva, whatever.

2.) Empirical support.

Why am I including empirical support? First, empirical has got nothing to do with emperors. Next, I’m not really looking for some high-flying scientific findings. There are a number of studies, researches and actual and official calculations out there. You can check independent websites, government sites, pati na Central Bank, NEDA, at kung ano ano pang ahensya nang sanglaan dyan. Hahanapin nyo lang to support much of the claims on the SONA 2008. Getz nyu naman ako di ba? A case in point, yong 50 cents. That’s one perfect example. So you’re report would say something like:

  • a.) “On the texting side, she perfectly shown the significant gains that people receive with the reduced cost in sending text messages. These economic gains were Smartly supported Globally hahahaha! Charing!” Or something like…

  • b.) “On the texting side, the speech did not cite that this was all nothing but you think you can dance that was shown on Philippine Idol and it looks like there’s nothing to support the assertion. To prove my point, Simon Cowell has this to say “That was horrible horrendous!!!” “. Sort of ganun.

And when you compare SONA 2008 to the previous ones, you could say something like: “Compared to SONA 2007, there is an enormous amount of independent research, figures and numbers to back up the assertions and achievements on the speech.” Of course, kelangan sabihin mo kung ano sila. And when you say something like: “It has all the elements in it” heck you better mention kung ano man tong mga elementong radikal na to ano? My point is, estudyante ka, you better be able to make some convincing pronoucements.

Bottom line, if you’re not a wide reader, you might have some problems but you can easily do some research. Hahahah! Wag kang mangopya, I’m telling you, lalabas at lalabas sa report mo that you did not prepare.

Now, I just cited two. You certainly can add more standards as you see them fit or kung ano pa man ang hinahanap nang titser mo sa report mo.

From there, I would move on to looking at the overall speech according to the following:a.) Major Points; b.) Strong Points and c.) Weak Points. Why? There are a lot of stakeholders in this speech. Each and every single one of us are looking for that magic something that will make us happy and gay. Well, maybe happy at hindi gay. I think this is easy enough, korek? The teachers are looking for something on Education. The farmers are looking for bra, este something in Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, etc., etc., and the teachers will certainly not be interested with what the other is getting. Alam nyu yun?

So, where do you start?

Major Points

You will probably have to start with something like: “The President scored some major points in the following...”, then list them down. Again, as I have said, you need to be able to justify and back up your own assertion also.

You do the same thing for the the Strong Points and Weak Points. What’s the difference with the Major and Strong points? Major is something out of the ordinary that essentially benefits a much broader scale and much bigger implications. Strong? Good but not great. Weak? Things like mga pasaring lang or those that were completely omitted pati na mga pantasya.

Finally:

When you write a SONA 2008 Reaction Paper, ignore your political inclinations. Read: kunyari professional ka! Hahaha! Majority of your professors will probably want you to be objective which is honestly what you must do anyway, dahil mga estudyante pa lang kayo. Hindi pa kayo kasing ganda kagaya ko. Marami pa kayong NFA rice na lalamunin. So, if you could present your paper in a very objective manner, complete with some convincing fact, figures and pictures ni Reyna, let me tell you, Summa Cum ever ever Laude ka. For WORLD PEACE, sasabitan kita nang Tanduay.

Pahabol: I’m not writing a SONA 2008 Reaction Paper, dahil alam ko, kokopyahin lang ninyo at babatuhin na naman ako ni Miss Alpay. However, I’ll share you some techniques in reading and analyzing long speeches. It’s very easy. Of course, sa next entry! Abangan! Hahaha!

bwahahaha! there’s certainly nothing wrong with taking that risk and actually if you can do it convincingly baka halikan ka pa nang professor mo eh hehehe, i’ve seen that in college, me dalwa akong kaklaseng very vocal and one of them medyo me kayabangan, pero magaling mag-inglis nun and honestly di ko maintindihan ang inglis nya noon, na-remind tuloy ako sa kayabangan nya hehehe
