Meet Senator John McCain, 72 years old

by Rainier on July 28, 2008

Senator John McCain’s Vietnam Veteran status is well known in the United States. He talks about this everywhere and all the time and I do have a lot of respect for his war records. After all, my brother is in the service as well. However, at 72 years old, it’s obvious he is getting confused, admitted to be needing some anger management.

What are the qualities that I am looking for, for my next American President? Here:

If I am voting for my next American President, I want him to be not only well-versed and eloquent, but also focused. I don’t want him to be confused. Like referring to Vladimir Putin, a Russian, a handsome Russian as… well, watch:

Just like any average American, most important to me is that I want my next American President to not only be knowleageable on the economy, meaning understand not only about the US and global economy, but BASIC, I mean, BASIC Economics, because if you don’t, then I have no idea how you could even contribute to fixing the US economy or even discuss economic policies! Being President of the United States is not just about wars! It’s very much about economics. Watch.

Extremely important to me in selecting the next American President is how he projects himself abroad. Image is everything. And very important to me is professionalism. Mild mannerism. Classy. And so therefore, I want my next American President to be able to control his temper. Heck! He can push that darn nuclear button if he goes ballistic at any moment! What if those were headed to Manila by mistake?!

And I certainly don’t want my next American President to be well… listen to this one. And here, he knew and admitted that he needed some Anger Management!

So, when John McCain attacked and insulted Barack Obama’s “The Audacity of Hope”, which to me was a classic, classic speech that will go down in history as one the of the best speeches delivered ever, that provides HOPE to everyone in America, I was honestly annoyed and it felt like my hopes and aspirations for a better America was being attacked as well. I wanted Senator John McCain to tell me what his plans are: to talk about how he would resolve the economic problems in America, how he will deal with the subprime and the housing meltdown, how he would attack to bring back the trust in Corporate America such that major IPO’s don’t go to London, Asia or anywhere else, how he would improve employment in the country, provide more low income housing developments and how he would save us from future Enronites. That’s why I did not like the personal attacks. These attacks does not win votes. And I personally hold that “Audacity of Hope” of Barack Obama as special.

You see, that was Bill Clinton’s re-election moment whose thunder was stolen by Barack Obama and I was one of those glued on TV when he delivered his “Audacity of Hope” during the Democratic National Convention where he awed the crowd and almost every Americans wanting for some change.

No offense to Senator John McCain, and his tireless reminder to all Americans that he’s a Vietnam War Veteran but at 72 years old, campaigning to be commander in chief, it’s tough when you’re old and confused.

Here’s what I gathered from reading and listening to the news:

• McCain was in Jordan with Sen. Joe Lieberman on March 18 when he asserted that Iranian operatives were aiding al-Qaida fighters in Iraq. Lieberman whispered to him, and McCain corrected himself: Iran was aiding extremists, not al-Qaida.

That distinction — al-Qaida is a Sunni Muslim group while Iran is a predominantly Shiite Muslim nation — had tripped up McCain a day earlier in a radio interview. The next month, during a Senate hearing on April 8, McCain stumbled again by referring to al-Qaida in Iraq as “an obscure sect of Shiites.”

• In an interview with a Pittsburgh TV station on July 9, McCain recalled how he had resisted his Vietnamese captors by refusing to give up the names of his fellow Navy pilots. Instead, he said, he recited the defensive line of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Actually, McCain gave the names of Green Bay Packers. At least that’s what he claimed in a 1999 memoir.

• McCain has had trouble discussing the Czech Republic. In New Mexico on July 15 for a town-hall meeting he discussed energy supplies in Czechoslovakia. But that country hasn’t existed since 1993 when it became the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He had made the same mistake the previous day — and back on April 2.

• In an interview with ABC News on July 21, McCain said of Afghanistan, “We have a lot of work to do, and I’m afraid that it’s a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border.” In fact, Iraq doesn’t border Pakistan.

• McCain said that Baghdad is now a safe place. General Petraeus even goes around in an unarmored Humvee.

No offense to Senator John McCain, but what I am seeing is the audacity of hopelessness.

Hey Reynz,

I read your Meet Obama entry and I liked it, although I must tell you that I’m still undecided as of today. Like you, I was rooting for Hillary, but I am much more uncomfortable with John McCain because I also have seen these gaffes in the news. Undecided but leaning towards Obama. Thank you.

Eric,

See, that was my problem in the beginning. There was a barrage of negative publicity of Barack and stupid me, I did not double check the information I was reading. But I suggest, you need to see him objectively and I think from there, hopefully you could make your own decision.

I came to my own decision largely because of John McCain’s interviews that we all watched on CNN and several other townhall meetings and what will permanently imbed in my mind was his circuitous nonsense response on the financial market economic team that was asked by the panel. To me, that was totally unacceptable for my being President. Then, I looked at his age, his McCain moments and then asked myself if I want my President to be like that on the world stage.

Now, remember when he rattled the Russians with bombing Iran?! For a super power like USA, you just don’t say those darn things, period.
