Unemployment Benefits

One of my benefits being unemployed for reasons not my own doing is getting an Unemployment Benefits. And so, last week soon as my company terminated me on their systems (which took another week of me calling the Benefits Department why I am still an active employee! Grrr!), I applied for Unemployment Benefits. These all could be done online, which I did. Today, I received the paperworks that I need to sign and some other materials.

Materials like “Notice of Financial Determination“. You see, it’s not automatic that you get your Unemployment Benefits. They need to determine as to whether or not, you were able to satisfy the required contributions. The determination is based on the wages you were paid and the credit weeks you earned during your base year. The base year is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to filing your claim.

Result?

You are NOT financially eligible for benefits.”

Reason?

Because you do not have 16 or more “credit weeks” during your base year. A “credit week” is any calendar week during the base year in which you earned at least $50 in covered employment.

WHAT?!

I don’t have 16 weeks? I worked for this company for over three years! Halller! 1 year equals 52 weeks! Ma-fkrrr!!! Multiply by 3 equals less than 16 weeks?! What kind of rusty, disgusting, non-working abacus are we using here?!”

I checked the report again. Here.

unemploymentbendetermination.JPG

I purposely blurred it but you can see that the reported contributions were for the 2nd quarter, 3rd and 4th quarter of 2007. The 1st quarter of 2008 is $0. When was that? March 31, 2008. Second quarter should have been filed already. They’re not there.

The last reported wage earnings by my compay was for the 4th quarter of 2007. What month are we now? This is now July 2008. So, you think they can dance?! Around this time, they should have reported the 2nd quarter of 2008. They’re supposed to report these promptly! Not after 6 months or after a year! Hallerrr!!!

Now, here’s what pisses me off. I was employed by this company in 2005!!! Curiously, where are my wage earnings and contributions for 2005 and 2006? How come they disappeared?! Were they reported properly?

You have no idea! I am really furious!

Now, I am beginning to think. Was this some form of strategy by my former company to really file the wage earnings and contributions way too late so that they could monitor and preemptively disqualify former employees to receive their benefits? I’ve raised this issue many times in the past that corrective actions be done on this one. Obviously, there was none done. Why do I know?

About a year or two years ago, we laid off 22% of our workforce and so, I was deluged by Unemployment Benefits complaints because people could not receive their Unemployment Benefits on time. It was chaos and blame game as mad as a football game. I did as much as I could to pacify irate former employees.

Now? Who’d pacify me? You think my boss from hell would love to hear from me?! I don’t think so!

Monday, I was supposed to go to New York. Instead, I’m going directly to the L&I Office to file a complaint.

nina (276 comments.) reply on July 14, 2008:

yes, tax-free although sa americans, first $80,000 lang yong free. Sa ibang Nationality, depende sa tax rules ng coubtry nila. Health naman kung lucky ka sa emoployer mo, sagot nila health insurance. Otherwise, free pa rin naman ang emergency, matertity sa government hospital (dito mas moderm ang government hospitalal) at cosultations sa health centers. Nung nagpa-laparoscopic sugery yong hubby ko 60 US cents lang nagastos namin - bayad dun sa pain reliever. :)
