Our trip to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware – Part 2 ( The Belarus Connection)

by reyna24 on July 7, 2008

Bumabagyo that night sa shore. So, we decided to go to Popeye’s Fried Chicken for dinner last night. Read: mga cheappangga kami.

This is Chuva Chicken.
belarus_popeye3.JPG
This is Chicken Diwa.

This is Chicka Reyna.
belarus_popeye4.JPG
Chicken Bugsy? Sinunog. Nagka bird flu.

Baka sakaling makalibre, I made chika-chika to this gurl who had an Eastern European accent. She asked me, how I was able to distinguish her accent correctly? Well, I told her that I was at Central European University in Budapest nung panahon nang hapon and that’s how I met a good number of friends from Eastern Europe and even became very good friend with Vlad from Moldova.

belarus_popeye2.JPG

Her name is Irina from Belarus and this is her 2nd summer stint here in the US. I found out that, their school in Belarus has a program, that they can work in the United States during the summer to either improve their English or learn more about the culture. As a matter of fact, majority of them who works here at Popeye’s were from Belarus. Even at Dunkin Donuts where we frequent for coffee. Most of them were also Eastern Europeans.

Out of curiousity, I checked their pitaka.

Hmmm… Eh ano nga kaya merong ding Summer Program ang mga pinoy kids to work here? You know, the Young OFW’s. Ganun.

;-) bwahahahahahahaha!

Meron tayo mga exchage students pero more on the academic side. Tapos meron din yong parang culture immersion -travel sa isang country, titira sa locals and they will tour the place pero mahal noh as in for the richiness lang.

nina, i know some people na yung anak nila na high school eh exchange students sa japan. di naman siguro kelangan na super yaman ang parents. depende lang siguro sa exposure ng bata at nang magulang. kahit middle class eh uubra. what i mean by exposure eh siguro depende kung saang school yung bata nag-a-aral, kung kasali ba ang school na yon sa mga exchange programs at kung nasa ulirat ba ng parents yung ganyang mga programs. working middle class sila, mga ex-officemates ko. may allowance daw doon sa Japan yung mga exchange students. i guess meron din qualifying exams sa ganyan. but i agree with you, hindi lahat ng students sa pinas eh nagkakaron ng opportunities like that.

i agree with Reynz in the comment above. i don’t think the U.S. allows such summer programs for Filipino students. sa bad record ba naman ng mga pinoy na nag-TNT eh i don’t blame the U.S. for that. kasalanan yan kasi ng mga gagong pinoy na puro kalokohan ang ginawa sa ibang bansa. yung sumunod na generation ang nag-suffer.

Pero hindi na rin naman impossible for college grads here na pumunta sa U.S. I mean take the GRE and TOEFL and apply for Master’s Degree kahit saang university, matanggap ka lang, makakarating ka sa America. Sabi nga, a student’s visa is still the easiest way to be approved (well i guess except for a direct hire working visa) sa US embassy ng manila.

Yeah, some exchange students programs provides living allowance but I think not all. There are exchange students programs in my school (college) before and they require certain GPA to be short-listed.

Yong cultural immersion – may nabasa ako recently.

Actually, may scholarship pa nga sa US – yong Full Bright. Tapos meron ding mga scholarships/ fellowships sa Japan, Australia, Netherlands and other parts of Europe kailangan lang may grey matter between the ears.

yup. i heard of fullbright at mga padala sa pinas. estudyante sa america o kung saan man eh nakakapadala pa rin sa pinas. iba talaga ang mentality ng pinoy ano? sa puntong yan kakatuwa.

hahaha! tama ka. the grey matter between the ears makes all the difference. ba’t pa mag-TNT?! susme. pero uyyy…may kilala ako natanggap sa MS program sa isang Tejano na eskwelahan sa America. nakupo! eh biglang nagdisappear daw sabi ng mga kasamahan. eh klaseng nag-TNT na nga din. kundi pa naman siraulo ano? baka yung program at eskwelahang yun eh hindi na tumanggap ng pinoy na estudyante sa susunod. hayyyy.

omg! hahaha! glo! you reminded me of my buhay in aquinas. i did have an OJT noon. what we do is collect those cocofed coupons which we learned mga shares pala ekek and when i found out about the whole damn thing nanggalaiti ako grrr

noon our OJT pays us an allowance. of course madatung ang cocofed noon. but my nephew (seaman) nag-OJT walang allowance, kami pa ang nagpapadala. nag utility (hate that word) sa isang company in manila, wala ring bayad. kainis di ba?

nina,

i am familiar with the exchange students kasi noon sa aquinas, they have a program na mag-exchange student sa US and one of them, kilala nang kebigan namen who when she came back from the US, pucha ang galing umingles and she became a radio announcer sa legazpi city. she became quite well known in our school actually.

immersion classes that i don’t know sa pinas. pero dito sa US, when i was in my 2nd year of french, i was supposed to stay in france for 6 months, immersion at you’re right, doon ako naka-assign sa provinsya nang france. di ko itinuloy dahil nag-MBA na ako.

glo, that’s right. there are a lot of legal ways to get to the US, one of those nga is education. kaso, they are looking for money. am sure, there must be some stories about students na nag TNT as in hallerr, yon ngang iba, aatend lang nang convention and seminars, ayun, umalpas na hahahah (sorry sa mga tinamaan – no pun intended!) hehehe

take the case of my niece from Surigao. she was accepted at Drexel University here in Philadelphia, kaso mo hinanapan nang anda ang payrents from Surigao. in the end, andun napunta sa Ateneo in Manila.

and nina, kung matyaga lang mag-hanap nang scholarship ang mga bata in pinas, there are a lot of scholarships being offerred abroad. isa na nga dyan ang Fullbright Scholarship. lalo pa ngayon that you can search for them easily sa internet.

i met one guy, professor sa MSU in Iligan, he went on to be a Fullbright Scholar finishing his masters at Drexel and then a PhD. Not sure kung nakabalik na nang MSU.

i think it’s the culture shock kaya nag-t-tnt dito. iba kasi talaga especially kung ang pinoy comes from the province. yong tukso is way too much.

the only suggestion i can make sa mga future TNT is to get used to life in america dahil not all that you see is beautiful, yong ibang nakikita mo is just aesthetics, alam nyo yun.

i’ve heard so many stories na nakakaiyak about pinoys na nag-tnt dito, kakatakot lang baka ako ang lusubin.

;-) he he he.
