I’ve never been to a gay bar! Can you take me there?
Yan ang madalas bukambibig nang mga friends ko, ke ma-deretso, ke ma-balikwa. But what I find interesting is the perception nang isang tao saten when one wants to go to a gay bar. Ilang beses na kasi akong nasigawan. It seemed like pag babae saten would want to go to a gay bar, isa syang babaeng paka o kaya isang matrona o kaya kalibugeyshusness at naghahanap nang panandaliang kuwabungga. Yet, andami ko nang napuntahang gay bar sa North & South America, Western at Eastern Europe. Minsan, mas marami pa ang deretso sa loob. Ba’t ganun? Di pa rin ba nag-babago ang malaking anomalyang akala nang iba oras na sinabi mo ang big G word?
MANILA
If anyone of you have been to “DATGAYBAR” (hindi po yan ang totoong pangalan!) which is near Edsa and GMA-7, that’s the typical Gay Bar that some people have in mind. Walang pinag-kaiba sa Bartolina sa Aurora Blvd dyan sa Cubao. The only difference being, yong mga dancers nang datgaybar are boys at yong sa Bartolina eh mga bubwitz.
Me entrance sa datgaybar and when we went there, that’s where I learned the word “consumable”. I really thought I could consume the boys to my heart’s content! Hindi pala. Inside, pag naupo ka, me lalapit na guy and will ask you kung gusto mong mag-teybol nang boy. I said - “Waaat?!” Pucha talaga oo! Sinabi ko nang kasama ko boyfriend ko, magteteybol pa ako? If you agree, watch dahil may I order ang boy nang isang trak nang sigarilyo at isang warehouse na beer. Ngayon, you have to pay for all those. At kung type mo namang ilabas ang kolokoy, you have to pay a bar fine. Ano yon? Yong tipo bang mag-pa-pyansa ka!!! Then there’s the sloooowwest music I have ever heard in my life with the ewan ko bang dancing ever na kala mo mga sawa sa mga nakakaiyak na tugtug. See? Walang pinag-kaiba sa Bartolina. Nilayasan namen at di na kami bumalik ever. Depressing. Indi yun ang idea ko magsaya.
NORTH AMERICA
Here in the United States, dahil rumampa na kami mula Boston hanggang Miami Beach, San Diego hanggang Castro sa San Francisco, Gay Bars we go to are not like these ones in Manila. If you go, mostly it’s free, unless there’s a disco dance floor. At least what I noticed is that, there are straight people who goes to these bars. Dito sa Philly, lito na ako sa Woodies kung gay bar pa sya sa dami nang deretsong nagsasayaw dun! It’s really nothing more than a bar – bibili ka nang drinks, kanya kanya, then chika chika, if you meet one, swerte mo, kung wala, pasok ka sa dance floor at dun mo ipokpok ulo mo. Ganun.
Are there gay bars na parang datgaybar? Not sure. I have not seen one. Although me mga gay bars na there are male dancers. There are several here in Philadelphia and straight people go there as well. Walang teybol teybol. As a matter of fact, ni wala ngang upuan eh. Tatayo ka lang, order nang drinks and be cute.
I remember in Washington DC. When we went near the Navy Yard, I noticed the male dancers were nude. In Philadelphia, that’s not allowed. They must cover “IT”. In Washington DC, lahat nakabukaka. I also noticed that every male dancer dancing in the nude were wearing socks. White socks. Sabi ko sa kebigan ko dahil ignoramusity ako, ano yon? Sabi saken, sinusunod lang daw nila ang batas. Batas?! They were following a municipal regulation that you must have one piece of clothing. Ayun. Although napalitan na yung lintek na batas na yun.
In Montreal, Canada, my favorite place is St. Catherine. That’s a street which is lined up with all kinds of gay bars and straight bars. Yeap, straight bars. Ke babae, ke lalaki. Here, wala silang regulation of one piece clothing. Lahat nakabalandra. It’s also the same in Toronto. Actually, enjoy kami ever sa Woodies in Toronto. I guess, dahil malalayo ang mga bar na susunod kaya siguro me mga deretso dito sa Woodies in Toronto.
One time when we went to Montreal, me isang Filipina who went with us and we thought dalhin sya bar. True, me upuan, me nag-se-serve, pero walang teybol teybol. Manood ka lang nang nagsasayaw. Ang drama nila, lap dance. Tong babaeng pinay was on a tour. Binitbit namen sa Macho Bar, napagkatuwaan namen. Binayaran ko yong guy to dance in front of her. Yong mata nung gurl nasa kisame. Binibilang nya mga butiki. Ayaw nyang tingnan yung butiking nasa harap nya. Mula nun, isinumpa ako nang gurl. Umuwi nang Pinas. Na-trauma.
EUROPE
Maganda sa Amsterdam. Everything is organized. Meron silang section nang puro you know… Yong akala mong department store na eskaparate, totoong tao ang nakatayo na makikita mo sa sidewok. Andun sila, minsan makikita mong pinapakita. Pero, ala kang makikitang pokpok sa kalsada. Kainis, naiwan ko ata sa Pasig ang litrato ko. Binayaran ko ang gurl na umalis sa entablado nya. Nag-hubad ako’t nilitrato nang kebigan ko. Yon ang pinadala ko sa boss ko in Princeton. Minura-mura ako nang boss. Sa totoo lang, mahal na mahal nya ako.
BACK TO MANILA
Kaya di ko maintindihan ang teybol teybol drama chuvalinga saten. Anu yun? Taz kung me ladies drink sa Bartolina, ano ang tawag sa datgaybars? boys drink??? Hay naku, madami pa talaga akong pag-aaralan sa larangan na tooo!!!

di pa ko nakapasok sa ADONIS pero ang dinig ko eh ang mga tinutugtog daw dun eh ganito:

Gay bar dito simply means it’s a bar or pub that’s frequented by gay people - so they feel free to be themselves without the sex.
I used to teach in Manila di ba? So syempre marami ring bading na colleagues at kinukwentuhan ako ng mga nangyayari sa ilang places. Wala namang sayaw o teybolan - sex lang naman sa madidilim na sulok. Actually buong club eh madilim. At di bale na katabi mong couple eh gumagawa rin ng milagro, hindi niyo naman daw nakikita ang isa’t isa. Nyeee.

Walang gay bar dito pero gay marami lalo na yong mga local. Bawal ang alcohol sa mga muslim kaya bawal ang mga muslims sa mga bar. Dito sa mga hotel lang nagseserve ng alcohol or you can buy from the dealer tapos diretso sa bahay.
Pero yong masahista ko kasi bading. Sabi nya sa shop nila may mga nagpupunta na locals or arabs for pleasure. Lam mo na, dito kasi fix marriage. Maraming di nakakapag asawa kasi napakalaki ng dowry
Saka kaloka, sa araw lang ng kasal nila nakikita yong bride nila kaya baka hindi sila nag-eenjoy

wagi ang gay bars sa north america…(although i havent been to one…in north america :-). it’s like brasil pala, people go to certain places (gay or not) to have fun, walang pakialam kung anong sasabihin ng tao. ang mahalaga, maligaya sila!

been to sao paolo at rio, kaso, school trip kaya di naka-alpas and di ko na-experience ang gay bar dun, although ansaya nang lugar nang brasil
yeah, dito samen, keri na kung me nagsisipsipang bagang sa likod mo, ki deretso ke bading, basta sa loob nang bar ala naman nang pakialam ang tao hahaha! kakatuwa nga tingnan kung minsan!

teka teka, ibig mong sabihin e hindi ka pa nakakarating sa gay bar sa bangkok at pattaya? nakow, you are missing a lot, hehehehe. tanungin mo ako, bilis, bilis… at sa gay beach, dun may taybolan din, ahahaha- may upuan sa harap mismo ng stage, at sa sulok.
nakarating na ako sa mga ganyan sa maynila, pero hindi dun sa pinupuntahan ni dok joy, arrrgh. hinahatid pa kami ng hotel taxi, de vah, ahahaha- ako lang ang girl talaga, feeling ko ang panget panget ko kasi walang pumapansin sa beauty ko ano. mas mabenta nag mga kasama kong jolakis, hahaha- may slow music, may rock, may disco at may tradisyonal dance pa kamo - ang masasabi ko lang, wala silang toilet para sa mga girls, wahhhhh!
dito sa oyropa, maraming ganyan; pero hindi lantad na gay bars nga katulad ng sinabi mo sa pinas at katulad ng sinasabi ko sa thailand.

di pa ako nakarating sa Bangkok ateng! hahhaa! pero nakahada na kami dyan sa Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest at London.
Sana tinuloy ko yong post, medyo kasi mahaba nang todo kasi sinali ko yong Eastern Europe. Sila kasi bagon dating sa civilisasyon piktapos nang kumonismo kaya medyo kakatawa pa sila, pero ambabait! hahaha

Bago pa itinayo ang Isetann sa Recto Ateng, may Bar/Club jan… tawag namen Patay (kasi patay sindi ang ilaw) hehehehe. Anyways, pumasok kami ang doon yumabong ang aking bokabolaryo at natutunan ko ang salitang “cover charge”, “consumables”, “table charge” - after ng happy hour, nude dances na, magkahalo girl and boylets…kaya kung girl ka or gay, watch ka ng mga boylets… Kung hombre ka naman, eh di watch mo yung mga gurls, o davah tu in wan? We always sit close to the fire exit kasi ilang beses na rin yun na raid, hehehe.

have you gotten the chance to go to Bed in Malate or Government in Makati?
i guess the gay bar you were talking about is the one no different from the tittie bars for straight men where women give lap dances and dance on poles - gay equivalent lang
but as far as places where gay guys go through the bar scene meron din naman niyan sa Pinas. When I was in college naabutan ko pa yung Mister Piggy’s sa Malate…
Pero dun sa Bed and Gov dun ngayon pumupunta ang mga kabataang bading ng Pilipinas kung saan walang hanggang kariran at pagandahan ang nagaganap (pero shemps pamhin po tayong lahat hehe) - sad ang scene because of the superficiality factor pero that’s another long story…
you have great site and keep up your efforts of uber-fabulousness!

heard ko na yang bed, in 2006 when i spent xmas there, i was with morisse and we were planning to go to BED kasi nga we’ve never been to some gay bars in menila, eh panu ba naman tong kebigan kong timang, nakita lang yung kasama kong dalwa ayaw nang magpaiwan so we stayed at cena at greenbelt in makati till 230am kaya ayun di kami nakarating sa BED na yan and never been to GOV as well mukhang bibisitahin manen yan in May
pero kong SAD ang scene - hmmm di ko type day! gusto ko yong mga timang ang tao hehehe

Government and Bed are awesome! I miss clubs in Manila soooo much! I’m not really a club person, but when I get some drinks in me, oh gurlll WATCH OUT! Bed was totally out of this world. I was there a few years back and it was like an orgy. Random guys just come up to you and start groping and kissing. Geez. Then there’s also the gay bar with macho dancers ahahaha eyelavit! How do they move like that?
The bars around here are OK, it’s just an older crowd. Now, I have nothing against older gay gentlemen, but they are just not my type. I remember when my friend and I walked into this fetish club and everyone had like piercings and tatoos and this older lady comes up and asks me what my fetish was…I said shoes and bags.

Never been to both of those places you mentioned. Last 2006 when I was in Manila, we were going to go to Bed but it never happened dahil nalasing kami in Greenbelt. I guess, I’ll see if I can go to these places when i go home this time around.

so that should give you an idea to open up a “GAY CLUB” sa manila that all people from all sorts of life are welcome… GAY’S are free to enter but STRAIGHT Peeps has to pay… tapus gawin mo syang parang gubat theme… merong kapre at tyanak na server diba ang sayasaya nay

nakapunta me once sa may macho king ba ‘yun sa aurora boulevard, ang mahal ng entrance fee that time, halos isang araw mong sahod, that was in 2004, paglapag mo ng one pack na yosi mo sa table, ubos siya in less than an hour, 1,500 daw ang pay sa vip at puwede ‘yun sa two guys, they can do everything you ask them to do, like kung kahit anong gusto mong ipadila, didilaan daw nila, but i never tried ha, hehehe, natatakot kasi me sa virus…in 2005, minsang napadaan lang ako dun sa labas, nagulat ako kasi may mga streamers pa sila advertising na may magaganap na torohan on a particular date, kaloka, as in…hihihi

hahaha but see, those are not the kind of gay bars i have in mind! kasi napunta na kami dyan sa Chicos and they charged us with almost everything nanggalaiti ako. twas my fault, i was igno kung ano yong napuntahan namen. iba kasi ang gay bar dito sa US sa gay bar there. not sure kung ano ang nasa malate hahaha
