I am just having such a bad day today with all these news about the Philippine peso! Grrrr!!!
It’s bad enough that my technorati ratings is going down drastically (napansin nyo?), I could see my 401-k disappearing forever!!! Now, I have to kayod forever para lang I could send the same amount of money na pinapadala ko sa mga boylets ko. Hmpt! Saan ako kukuha nang additional $400 US dollars? It’s winter pa naman! Mahirap tumambay sa kanto nang Market Street in Philadelphia and market myself!  Pano ko mababayaran ang barong-barong ko in Pasig na kung saan ako mag-re-retire next year pag otsenta uno na ako?
That’s the press release by the Asian Development Bank in today’s papers. And to make things more interesting, according to the latest forecast:
And according to that news, it’s possible for the peso to reach and even break the Php40 barrier. Me barrier ba? Sino ang maglalagay nang barrier? BSP? If I were the Central Bank, titigilan ko na lang makialam sa rising peso because they will just go bankcrupt!
Is it only the OFW dollars pouring into the country which is now forecast to top US$16billion this year? Well, it is and more. Let me introduce another item which you probably don’t read on the Philippine news.
The Sarbox
What is this? It’s short for Sarbanes-Oxley. They don’t sell horses or cows, they’re US Senators with whom this Senate Bill was named after. You can find out about Sarbanes-Oxley here, here and here.
Essentially, this all came about because of what these companies did: Enron, Worldcomm, Adelphia and many more which even brought down this biggest accounting firm down to oblivion – Arthur & Andersen. If you are not familiar with these companies that I listed, here’s a very short, brief and complete explanation about these companies. Cheaterrrrsssss!!!! And the biggest loser from these cheats are the lowly messengers and office workers who saw their retirement accounts went from some millions of dollars to zero. Another biggest loser? US domestic and foreign investors.
Sarbox initial effect to the US financial market was just some heavy financial regulations. Result? Although Sarbox came about to fix and bring back investor confidence into the US financial market, the heavy regulation and costs involved made investors and IPO’s look for other places to dump their mighty dollars. Our US public equity market has just deteriorated in recent years! Check this out from what I just read on the Financial Week 12/10/2007:
-
None of the 20 largest global IPO’s were done in the United States
-
Foreign companies are delisting from the New York Stock Exchange at a greater rate! 12.4% delisting this year vs. 6.6% last year
-
The US portion of the global share trading dropped from 41.2% this year from 49%
Now, of course there are those who dispute the assertion that the US is losing in the bid for IPO’s (See Global IPO’s hit a record by Barbara Roper on the same paper).
Heck, it’s interesting that I was just reading the Philippine Daily Inquirer today and even the local DFNN Gaming unit is looking towards the London Stock Exchange instead of the ones in the United States according to this news:
The gaming unit of publicly listed information technology solutions provider Diversified Financial Network Inc. (DFNN) is considering listing on the London Stock Exchange or another foreign bourse to raise funds for increasing its stake in a recently acquired gaming company, DFNN said.
DFNN subsidiary Pacific Gaming Investments Pte. Ltd. said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange that it had an option to buy an additional 33.33 percent in Interactive Entertainment Technology Solutions (IETS) if it could fulfill certain conditions, one of which is listing on the London Stock Exchange or an alternative comparable exchange.
Interestingly, even the Philippine government is now looking into peso loans. I guess, if the country is awash with dollars, why would you borrow more dollars? It’s just logical, right? Let’s leave it to the BSP bigwigs to decide. But I thought, the mere fact that we’re already shying away from the US dollars is really interesting, albeit, seconding the motion that the world doesn’t have any more confidence with the mighty US dollar? Am I reading this right?
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Finance to study a proposal of Senator Mar Roxas for the government to shift from dollar loans to peso loans as a means to curb the peso’s climb and ease the adverse effect on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other sectors, Roxas said Wednesday.
What does this all mean to us Filipinos and why am I discussing Sarbanes Oxley here? Because of its direct effect on US competitiveness and it’s eventual effect on our Philippine peso.
Nosebleed?
It’s like this.
The more we (in the US) remain uncompetitive, the more the dollar goes weaker. The more weaker the dollar, the stronger the peso becomes. In short, I believe that one of the biggest reasons why the Philippine peso kept rising is because the dollar is falling, well, oxymoronic, kinda. Why is the dollar falling? One word to add to our problems here  – competitiveness. We just continue to be uncompetitive now!
This is just my personal opinion because I am sooooo ridiculously annoyed at my disappearing retirement funds!!!
Signs of times:
Have car: Will travel. If you have friends and relatives in my area: I plow snow for $20!!! Deep discounts if there’s a goodlooking guy in the household! Anyone?
Not signs of time!

Anyway, I think you’ll read actually more about money here than on OFW Center dahil ginawa ko lang yon tapunan nang mga PPP at review posts ko. Meanwhile, ni indi na nga ako makapag PPP.
One of these days, I’m gonna have to re-categorize my posts to make it easier to find.

Well, alam mo sa financial market maraming mga speculators who could actually manipulate yong pagbaba at pagtaas nang exchange rate gaya nga ni George Soros who’s very well known as a currency speculator kung saan sila kumikita. I think several years ago, diniklare sya na persona non grata nang Malaysia. As far as the gobyerno is concerned, not really sure kung ano ang drama nila other than yong BSP eh once in a whille i-rescue yong peso sa sobrang pagtaas, but not really sure kung me behind the scenes na mga drama sila.

Ambo’s last blog post..Marhgil Macuha is Giving Away $150 This Christmas
reynz (4448 comments.) reply on December 14, 2007:
Ok, pareng ambo:
unahin naten yong mga presyo nang bilihin: generally kasi, lahat nang bilihin dyan saten sa Pinas eh dictated na sya nang world or global prices dala nga nang presyo nang bariles nang oil, di ba? yan parati ang hinihintay nang lahat, kung magkano na ang presyo nang isang barrel pati na gasolina and everything. so, it’s not only pinas ang nag-eexperience nang high prices, kundi every country.
eto ang perfect example about effects nang world prices sa isang country - like the US. we have our sub-prime crisis dito, in effect nag slow down ang housing construction, so iisipin mo dapat bumaba yong mga construction materials pati na steel, pero kwidaw ka, indi po sya bumaba, instead tumaas pa, why? ang China kasi, kung makakain nang steel grabe, kaya pati prices nang steel dito sobra sobra den. ganun ang epekto.
honestly, di ako naniniwala na bababa ang mga presyo nang basic commodities saten, what i wanted to see is yong sweldo nang mga pinoy ang tumaas and i think i have an idea kung bakit di tumataas ang mga sweldo nang pinoys to cope sa pagtaas nang basic commodities.
with rising peso at yong dollar bumababa, am sure kumikita ang mga kompanya dyan, agree? so yong bottom line nila (net income) nire-rake na lang nila’t binubulsa instead na dagdagan ang sweldo nang mga empleado. interestingly, lumabas yong per capita nang pinas compared to the rest sa asia and we place sa pagkalayolayong 15th.

reynz (4448 comments.) reply on December 14, 2007:
Doon naman sa kung bakit bumababa ang dollars: gaya nga nang explanation ko dito sa post ko maraming reasons and one of them eh eto ngang tinatawag na investor confidence, (although basahin mo yong nilink ko dyan about the Fall of the Dollar where he talks about Budget Deficits as the number 1 reason.)
For years, gabundok ang foreign investments sa US, until all these mga panlolokong ginawa nang mga kompanyan Enron, Worldcomm na sinabi ko sa taas. Resulta?

I think that this credit crunch is merely a correction. The US economy is too large to become marginalized. As for Sarbox, I think that it was a measured response due to all the accounting scandals. It was a way for them to close loop holes and allow the internal auditors to be more objective. I think it’s just a bunch of Wall Street Republicans who think that government regulation is bad and so on and so forth. Then they start talking trash about how Sarbox is hampering their business. Well, we wouldn’t have the need to create Sarbox if the finance department and managers had ethics. Let me tell you Reyna, those audits are a pain in the ass. I’ve had bosses who try to coerce me into doing the wrong thing. We need Sarbox to tell these people that what they are doing is not only unethical, but also illegal.
US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are beginning to merge with International Accounting Standards (IAS) which means that in this globalized economy, corporations that are corrupt will no longer have a place to hide. As far as the NYSE or US equity markets losing their worth, I feel that this is merely a correction. Americans are wee bit strapped for cash right now, plus I really don’t trust banks as of yet. Investor confidence will return.
What is more disconcerting, are the speculators who keep driving up the value of the peso. Aren’t these the *same* people who plunged all of Asia in a financial crisis in ‘97? Remember that? It *could* happen again. I just hope the Philippines can absorb the shock once these speculators start dumping off the peso.

Also, don’t forget our ridicoulous budget deficits! Anak ni kulapo talaga!
On the speculators - dang right! I hope we all could absorb should that happen and don;’t we have some type of property boom? Na wala namang bumibili puro mga tiga labas or expats and OFWs? I wonder what’s going to happen to that housing boom if the peso continues to appreciate like this sana wag nga maging Thailand in 97…

reynz,
thanks for that bits of info. feeling scholarly yata tayo ngayon (kahit ako, I have to study hard to explain the “phenomenon” of strong peso sa mga ka-tropa natin dito sa Saudi na karamihan ay factory workers).
so si GMA na pala mismo ang nag-utos nun, but the Dept. of Finance has announced recently it is cutting down foreign borrowings in dollars by 4%, by issuing P20B worth of government securities in peso denomination in its bid to “balance” the strength of the peso daw.
as usual, OFs pa rin ang gagatasan nila to resolve the peso-dollar problem, kasi ang sinasabing govt securities ay ibebenta nila to guess who — OFs pa rin.
