Book Review: The Agenda, by Michael Hammer

by reyna21 on October 23, 2007

Finally, after about 10 years of reading this book – under the tree, inside the train, in the parking lot and in the middle of some summer parties, I finished the book! Yeeeehaaa!

So, here’s my book review on The Agenda, by Michael Hammer.

Introduction:

theagenda.JPGThe Agenda starts off with a premise that there was a big change in the economy, and all the approaches and styles done before are no longer working. Suddenly, we now find ourselves in the middle of a new economic reality that the customer is the king. Product and services are commodities.

Therefore, customers deserve a hassle-free, value added experience. No longer is it enough to simply make a product and expect customers to buy your product, rather, this is the age where we as a business exists to solve our customers problems. He then presents emerging concepts that he calls as Agenda, which are the following:

1. ETDBW-Easy to do business with; make things easy for your customers regardless of the size of your company. Have one face or department in dealing with your customer.

Following the basic concept, TOSHIBA released their notebooks as Satellite (for extreme graphic and multimedia consumers), Portege (Ultraportables for people on the go) and Tecra (a mixture of both with slight focus on durability). Then there’s Dell with their Latitude, Precision and Inspiron.

Do you know that during the pre-product design stage, they conduct surveys from end-users to determine not only their performance needs but also for optimized mobility and ergonomics.

This actions that aim to well satisfy the growing demands would then result to higher design and manufacturing cost. And to be able to compete with the price wars among them, OEMs like TOSHIBA, Dell, HP and even Apple Computers are opting for ODMs instead of designing or producing their own products. Hmmm…

@kotsengkuba,

I will always remember Michael Hammer as the guy who coined ETDBW.

You pointed out Dell. Indeed, Dell would be a very classic example of ETDBW and that’s the whole succes of Dell, coz not only did they re-invented the marketing of PC by changing the game, they also re-invented the product to suit to what the customers wanted by giving customer a wide array of choices – even building their own PC. That’s being easy to do business with. It’s a model where Dell would stay number one for so long.

We actually discussed the Dell Story in detail that it’s one of our favorite case studies including Soutwest Airlines.
