AJ Sotteau: Needs your help on his Ad Campaign Proposal
Ok, before our Professor Kuta beats the heck out of me, AJ’s situation is different from the other one that you castigated ano? Mabait to, pramis, di kagaya nung una. AJ prepared an Ad Campaign for his school thesis that was rejected by his Professor. I asked him to post his work so we could take a look and maybe we could help him.
He posted his work here and I’m asking you guys that let’s help him with his project. He needs some advice on what or what not to do. This is not cheating Professor Kutz because his project is finished already - it’s just that - it did not pass the Professor’s quality test.
Do I hear some creatively talented minds helping AJ? Bibigyan ko kayo nang lobo at babolgam! Tulong naman o! Eto yong mga dapat tinutulungan na bata instead of those negativities on the net!

malay ko sa advertising? may DNA strand ba dyan na kailangang extract? May fingerprint ba dyan na kailangang i match? hehehehehe, di sakop ng powers ko yang advertising, sowee…
Pero sa aking hindi exfert na mga mata eh, di yata attractive ang kulay… as in siya yung tipo ng ad na kapag nakita mo sa TV or ginawang billboard sa daan eh ni hindi ka maeengganyong mag second glance man lang…
Saka kulturang pinoy di ba? Dafat makita mo kaagad yung mga kulay tulad ng nagmamatigas na asul, nanggagalaiting dilaw, nagmumurang pula, kahindikhindik na kulay dalandan, at nakakabulag na berde… isama mo pa ang binugbog na bayolet!
Mas okay yata kung mga primary colors karamihan at ilang matitingkad na secondary colors. Piktapos, iksi-an nya yung mga lines lalo na dun sa blue-green/aqua na slides, hehehehe, di ko na mabasa pero kita ko ang haba, ne!

Reyna pa-epal ha. Pakisabi kay AJ dapat ang ad nakakatawag atensyon. ‘Yung tipong kahit male-late ka na sa office, pag nakita mo e sigurado mapaphinto ka kahit saglit. Kasi nga ang ad may gustong sabihin, at hindi pa alam ng tao kung anong sinasabi nito kaya the first step e tumawag ng atensyon para basahin ng dumadaan kung anong laman ng ad mo.
Hindi ko alam kung anong talagang layout nung ipinasa nya sa prof nya pero dun sa nakapost sa blog nya, unang tingin mo palang parang ayaw mo nang tingnan ang detalye. Tama ka sa kulay, dapat makulay. Parangsinabawang gulay.
Syempre advertising project ‘yan, expected ng prof na makikipag-kumpetensya ka sa ibang ad. Ganun din naman ang mga ads, nakikipag-kumpetensya sa ibang ads para ang ad nya ang mas basahin ng tao.
Malawak na ang photoshop, Photoshop CS na ang labas ngayon kaya mas malawak na ang choices. Lagyan ng shadows ang main objects. Hindi ‘yung simpleng shadow lang, dapat yung shadow na extended at streched na kala mo talagang anino nung object. Lagyan ng texture ang background. Hindi na uso ang simpleng RGB colors lang ang background, dapat may texture para magkabuhay. Halimbawa, para sa thema nya e scenic spots man lang o kahit anong activity. Magkaron lang ng buhay ang background.
Magulo na ata ang sinasabi ko pero para sa kabuuan, kung ako ang customer o professor nya, 2 major things ang titingnan ko. 1: color and texture and 2: dating, impact o arrive ng catch line.
‘yung lang po. Sana makatulong.

Inang and AJ, the ads were a little bit blur pero I agree to what Kutz and Kotsengkuba said. Just to ad a little:
1. the ad should be visually striking
a: use earth color tones
b: avoid pastel unless you are doing an ad for women, make ups and gurly stuff.
c: the images must be flawlessly cropped. tipo bang hindi halata na ipinaskil mo lang sa isang background.
d: there should be a three dimensional effect, shadows or light effects would help
e: avoid plain backgrounds when doing a visual especially scenic ads
f: when doing face crops, make sure that they are either equal in size, proportion baga, or small to large, large to small order
g: photoshop subjects must be visually alive… go to flickr for some photos… and not just from scanned books or google images (of course ask permission from the owner first)
2. Ths slogan must be catchy: pinagsamang common at unusual.
halimbawa, eto isang slogan sa isang marketing firm:
“show me your WEANUS, I’ll show you my ANUS”
*WEANUS - Weekly Estimated Annual Net Usage Statistics
*ANUS - Annual Net Usage Statistics
tipong ganyan. Although KSP is a common phrase but its not catchy enough. you could go for:
“SIKAT PINOY” instead of KSP
SIKAT PINOY = “Sining, Kultura at Tatak Pnoy”
then don the ad with scenic backgrounds of the philippines, interspersed with alibata alphabets, bamboo stalks, manobo weave clothes etc. just to make the ad more visually appealing.
3. avoid squares… its stifling… go for curve/round corners instead.. it shows dynamicity
4. dont go for cliches and templates like shuffled photograph effects… laos na yun, sa mga banners na lang iuso yun..
5. yung banderitas mo it should be an actual photo of banderitas.
6. do not combine actual or live photos with drawings and cartoons. It confuses the eye unless it is a comics ad, an editorial or a comic strip.
7. put some shadow, glare and light effects on your letter heads (texts) o kaya naman Gradients to make it exciting hindiu isang kulay lang.
TIP: if your backgroiund is plain, make it sure it is a mixture of two or theree colors… we call it gradient. paramng frong light to darkness
when doing a text, plain text is for ads with visually loaded background. while texts that have gradients and other design is for plain background.
shadows are used to highlight a text especially when the background overwhelms the foreground.
Given the choice between an apple and an orange, ang mas kakagatin ng masa ay yung ad na nagpapakita ng
“masanas na kinakagat ng bibig ng babae na may lipstick”
kesa sa
“orange na pinipiga sa baso”
…. human weakness is sometimes the bait for advertisement… ganun lang… ngyon hanapin mo sa slogan mo kung ano papatok na makakakacatch ng atensyon ng ad mo…
pwede you include a picture of an actual KSP student raising her hands whle the other students are just sitting and staring at her, while the teacher is acting as if she was calling her…then their background is some scenic heritage of philipines… then include a slogan: I LOVE KSPs! that would be catchy enough!
just let your imaginations get wild….

anyhow yan ay opinion ko lang, hindi ako ad agent or working in an advertising firm pero sa dami ko na ginawa na design in and out of the net, and observing most of the elements on manila’s bill board and ads, mostly yan ang natutunan ko sa sarili ko… and also taking it from the people’s reaction and the social psychology, alam mo dapat kung ano kakagatin ng masa.
take it from me… the more controversial your ad is the more likely it will be preyed upon by hyenas…. my recent banner was just screen capped — yun ang ibidinsya hahahaha.

oh my god inang reyna, labis akong nagagalak sa iyong effort ha..at sa mga nagcomment, tama ang inyong mga kumento, iyan din ang napansin ng guro ko..una kasi, inisip ko na dapat ay mejo pormal pormalan yung ads ko, pero sabi nga ni propesora ay festive ang aking events kaya dapat ay magara at buhay na buhay ang ads ko..dapat nga din ay gumamit ako ng hindi plain na background..mali ang desisyon ko sa mga kulay, siguro ay nagmadali lang din ako dahil isang gabi ko lang lahat ginawa iyan at kung anu-anong images lang din ang nakuha ko..siguro ay dapat mag-effort ako ngayong sem break na magpicture ng mga visuals para mas maayos, hindi pixelized at makuha ko ang nais kong makuha..
siguro po ay pressured lang din ako dahil sa dami ng ginagawa, tulad kanina ay 5am ako natulog dahil sa aming visual merchandising art finals kung saan pinagawa kami ng interior at perspective ng dream shop namin, ang akin nga pala ay rainbows are gay haha..nagising ako ng 8am at pinagpatuloy ito, pagpasok ko sa skul ay nagpasa ng finals sa composition painting at nagpatuloy mag-edit ng dokyu namin para sa tv prod at nung gabi ay nagtungo sa makati upang ipasa ang finals sa opisina ng propesor..nakakapagod ang ganitong buhay..hay hay hay..
ngayong sem break ay sisimulan ko nang mag-isip ng iba pang kunsepto, tiyak na susundin ko ang inyong mga payo..inisip ko lang din, akala ko ay madali lang magpaaprub ng ad campaign gayung “special events” talaga ang topic ko, mali pala ako..ang dami ko pang dapat gawin over the sembreak, pati mga designs ng mga collaterals at pati yung mga written works, interviews at survey results..ang daya nga, yung ibang course ay grup ang thesis at written lahat..sana lang hindi ito makahadlang sa nalalapit ko nang pagtatapos..
salamat inang reyna ha,at sa lahat ng nagcritize, tinatanggap ko yung mga flaws ng ads na nagawa ko..sa apat na taon kong pag-aaral ng advertising, hindi ko pa rin matandaan yung kung anu talaga ang nakaka-aattract sa mga tao..marahil kasi ay sa mga walang impact na ads na nakikita ko sa telebsiyon..narealize ko kasi na sa advertising ay kliyente pa rin ang nagcocontrol ng mga ads kaya minsan walang magawa ang creatives kapag ayaw ito ng kliyente nila..

Reynz, di naman ako terror sa mga students basta nakita ko yung eport noh…yun naman kasing dating mga studentries mo eh, dinisect mo na nga yung SONA, gusto pa gawan mo sila ng title saka intro ng paragraph nila, WEDEEE BAAAA??????????

Ay panalo agad? Meron ngang di nagbabasa bwahahahaha. Maryosep ano pang sasabihin ko e panalo ka na pala Aj eh.
BPJ, napadaan lang ha, e parang blog post na yang sinabi mo hahahaha. Makigulo na din ako dito, pero don’t take this seriously e wala naman akong alam dito talaga haha.
Aj, tama ang sinabi ng mga kuya’t ate mo. Makinig ka sa mga matatanda lols.
First glance ko sa entry mo e di ako na strike sa colors na pinili mo. Patay. For me you can use plain color (like kuya BPJ said earth colors), but be sure when using plain colors, yung subject mo dapat me dating. Yung tipong kahit isang photo lang nakalagay jan e pagpipiyestahan na agad. Tipong head-turner ang dating. Sa subject, tulad din ng sinabi ni kuya bpj na ung bibig na me kagat na mansanas, pero ang lips mas makulay pa sa mansanas. Pwede mong ilagay sa plain white background yan. Xempre aartehan mo ang paglalagay ng subject, hindi ung tipong cut and paste ka lang. Dapat unique. Iisipin mo lagi yan. Dapat maarte ka. Kasi sa panahon ngayon, madaming maarte haha.
Your text should emphasize the meaning of the subject. Tama ba ako? haha. Sa font style, madami jan pagpipilian. Pwede kang pumili ng simple pero yun nga artehan mo like the shadows, the glassy effect, the diminishing effect etc. ang dami sa photoshop.
Kung pag-uusapan ang haba ng text mo, ok lang yan. Ang the best jan, wag mo namang pagsama-samahin sa iisang lugar na tipong nagbabasa ng paragraph sa libro ang makakakita. Pero ang payo ko tulad ng sabi ni kutz, mas maikli mas ok. Para naman di tamarin magbasa ang makakita. Xempre kahit maikli yan dapat me datin na naman. iisipin mo lagi, me dating ba ang ginawa ko? Unique ba to? pwede ka namang tumingin ng ibang samples like your mama reynz advised you. Pwede kang kumuha ng ideas outside. Pwede kang mangopya but not exactly the same, xempre ibahin mo lang yung presentation.
O yan na muna. Ang haba na pala nito di ko napansin hahaha. Keep up Aj. All the best!
