Why can’t ASEAN condemn the repression in Myanmar? Why can’t ASEAN exert enough effort to make Myanmar make good it’s promise 11 or so years ago to bring democratic & free elections to that country? Is ASEAN meaningless when it comes to policing its own ranks? Oh! I forgot! It’s called non-interference! Duh!~

For all these years, this non-interference strategy adopted by ASEAN is a joke and is not really working and will not ever evah work! Hell might freeze into blocks of ice but I don’t ever see Myanmar’s military junta making good their promise to bring free elections and democracy to Myanmar.  I’m wondering if the reluctance of the ASEAN members to deal with the black sheep in the family sort of serves a double edge sword with the non-interference strategy to feed on the ‘what’s if it’s us” scenario!

Aung San Suu-Kyi is the real leader in Myanmar, the military junta knows that, the world knows about that, grrrrr!!! even Matilda knows about it, ok?! Let’s not forget who pushed People Power into the minds of the world who wants to fight for freedom. People in Myanmar are fighting out there in the streets as are Filipinos fighting for what we deserve in a different time! They’re fighting for what we’ve fought for! Suu-Kyi is their Benigno Aquino! So, why can’t ASEAN just drop Myanmar altogether from the association?

  2. Suu-Kyi was one of my heroes when I was a child.

  4. What I don’t understand is how ASEAN can just stand back and not do anything. The US, yes, even GW Bush , has condemned it and has expanded sanctions. Unfortunately, I think ASEAN might be too afraid of China or is waiting for what China intends to do. I hope that they know that China only does what is best for China. They’re scared that this could spread in their own country. I doubt they’ll condemn it or impose sanctions. ASEAN should show some backbone and say that what Burma is doing is wrong and inhuman. Hello Philippines??? Asia’s oldest Democracy..say something!

  6. ASEAN is just one useless piece of taxes wasted! EU and US have been on the frontlines already and ASEAN will just meet! JUST MEET! can you imagine?!

Even the Philippines at that time when we had that People Power - we were supported by these people yet the Senate has not said NOTHING!

The whole ASEAN is silent! Where is Malaysia? Thailand? (Oppss! They’re guiltty!) Where is Singapore? (Ooopss Business interests!) Where is Brunei? (Who cares, they got money!) Where is Indonesia?

Man! This pisses me off you know!

  8. The ASEAN is a joke. It’s just for show. Everything it does is just for show. Therefore, expulsion for Myanmar is just for show.

But here’s the deal. Myanmar is a recent addition to the ASEAN and the main motivation is it’s geographical proximity to Thailand. Myanmar and Thailand have been long-time enemies when it comes to border security and scuffles have been numerous in the past. This whole ASEAN membership has given the Thais the ability to better manage the situation. Haha, I used this argument in a debate, bumenta. lol

ASEAN has no moral ascendancy. Is Singapore democratic? Is Thailand? Heck, with all the political killings, the Philippines should also be kicked out.

Having Myanmar in the ASEAN gives us a semblance of “jurisdiction”. Once we leave them alone, they become hermits! Here are the countries who went a similar path - 1) Iran, 2) North Korea and 3) Afghanistan…. not exactly very rosy.
