Da TRUE and nothing butt da true: Where OFW remittances are coming from:
In 2006, Overseas Filipino Workers remitted a total of $12 billion glittering US Dollars to the Philippines. Eto po sya shown by top ten sources by country. If you look, almost 60% of which comes from the US and only 10% is coming from Saudi, followed by Canada at 5%.

On a bigger scale or by regions, you’d notice that it’s pretty much the same with 56% coming from the US, but Europe is now contributing 16% and the Middle East at 15%.

What are the implication of these numbers? Easy. Alam nyo po, yong ating mga kapatid in the Middle East has been asking for some help sa? FOREX rate but is getting no less than mere lip service. Tingin nyo? Could this be the? reason?!
7.5% GDP!!!
Our good friend GDP is in the headlines again. Kaya! Hoyyy! Basahin nyo! BILISSS! Kasi bumabagsak eh! Depends on what day you read the news!? Yesterday it was 7.5% – ngayon? 6.36% na lang sya! BILISAN NYO SABING MAGBASA EH!!! Mamya nyan zerowena na yan!
Ok, but I don’t want to talk about GDP yet. Result? Wa pa ring jobs generated at home. Kaya naman – I was reading this news tungkol dun sa nag-attend nang berdey in Malaysia. Arroyo crows about RP economic growth to OFWs in Malaysia where she said:
In fact, Arroyo said a number of Filipinos were returning to the country to work in big industries such as Texas Instruments in Clark, Pampanga and the Hanjin shipyard in Subic, which have poured in billions of pesos in investments.
A NUMBER? Baka isa lang? Di kaya? So I decided to research. Pucha! Wala lang nga akong makuhang work ovah deh! So, let me show you what I found.
Da TRUE and nothing butt da TRUE: Are OFW’s going back home? Or is there still an exodus?
I am using the POEA numbers. Table 20, page 23 po sya nito. ? I created this in MS Excel and graphed da damn thing para makita naten ever. The statistics started in 1998, kaya when you see “98″ getz nyo na! And when you see “1″ dots “2001″ and so on and so forth. Do we all understand kids?! Sasampalin ko kayo pag di nyo yan naintindihan! Grrrr!

Well, this graph is Asia. Wag kayong mag-mi-miss Carolina saken! We all know what comprises Asia! So, in 1998 – there were about 300,000 OFW’s all over Asia. It remained relatively unchanged up until 2003 and then medyo nag-si-si-alisan na sila. Remember, there’s the Iraq War, that could be one of the reason. And then, there were changes in Japan’s accepting entertainers – gusto nila yong marunong na talagang kumanta? instead na dating kokak? nang kokak? – so mula noon, nabawasan also? ang mga Japayuki sa Japan. Again, that could be one of the reason.

This is the deployment naman in the Middle East. From 1998 to right around 2004, there’s an average of about 300,000 Filipinos going to the Middle East para iritahin yong damboohalang balyenang tikbalang na? di magkasya sa economee. Now, remember – mga new hires and rehires to – just in case ayaw nyong puntahan at basahin yong actual source. In 2005 there was a noticable increase in the deployment in the Middle East. What could it be? I could only suspect that it’s the UAE economy growing stronger as ever, especially Dubai which is now becoming to be one of the more important trading center in the world.

Heres the America’s – meaning kasali Canada, Mexico and the rest of the America’s in the south. If you noticed, we are only deploying roughly 10,000 OFWs from 1998 to about 2002, although there was a blip in 2001 and that could be the result of 911. From there, it continued to increase up to now. Who are they? Let me guess – nurses?
BIG QUESTION # 1 !~
Now, based on these numbers, I can’t believe that there only an average of 20,000 OFWs going to America. To me, this is really funky if you compare it with the remittances from the Americas. There’s a wide gap between the Middle East and the America’s as far as remittances are concerned. Check the graph above. Americas is sending 60% and only 10% from the Middle East. There’s 20,000 in the US compared to about 300,000 in the Middle East.
Really?! Sino kaya sila? Saan sila nagwo-work?!
Comelec???
BIG QUESTION #? 3 !~ Pustahan tayo!? Remittances is even bigger than $12 billion!
Palagay nyo? If you consider yong mga bayong bayong at yong mga inipit sa gilid nang balikbayan boxes? na padala that’s not going through the regular channels na di mamonitor nang POEA or banking industry naten, I suspect, mas malaki? pa to sa $12 billion! How do they account? those numbers?
Let’s go back to our presentation.?

Now, let’s go to Africa. Di naten pedeng kalimutan to, we have some avid readers from Africa you know. There’s about 6,000 of them going to the oils and rigs in Africa to work at dahil medyo magulo in 2001, nag-uwian. But the trouble in Africa actually did not subside and you would think that the deployment would actually level up but it didn’t. So how do we explain this? We all have to remember how much our Pinoy friends in Africa suffered especially nong kinidnap pa sila in Nigeria.

Eto naman yong Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Marianas and those small islands in the Pacific. There’s not much activity here but I do know that some of them who go to these islands eventually apply for work somewhere else. Some of my former officemates in Makati actually worked in some of these islands. There are those who stayed and some of them migrated to Canada.
Oceana naman includes Australia & New? Zealand? at mga kalapit na islands. If you noticed, there’s not many of them who goes there, but now, it’s starting to pick up.
SOOMARI of DA TRUE and NOTHING BUTT DA TRUE
Now, if we add them all up together one another ever ever – here is what you will see:
You will notice that we started flying out of the Philippines in droves, yong iba nag-sagwan – at rougly a steady pace of about 600,000 OFW’s a year with the noticeable increase beginning 2005. Can anybody guess???
Now – if indeed the economy if growing, it should be able to provide us jobs. Korek?
To find out kung sumi-semplang or kung saan man papunta ang graph na to – nilalagyan po to nang tinatawag na TRENDLINE, which is easy sa Excel kasi click of a button lang sya. Result? Bakit kaya? Hmmm… Anybody knows? Class? Class? Ba’t walang tao sa klase ko?!
DA BIGGER KESTYON:
So now that you have seen my research and investigative bloggaciousness, this brings us to the much much todo todong grandeng bigger question – ARE OFW’s COMING HOME?!
The answer is YES.
“Hindi na kasi Pilipinas ang HOME namin”.
Chikaaaaaaa!!!! Hahaha! Ang ibig kong sabihin, NO. They’re even increasing OUT of the Philippines.

ang gleng gleng mo talaga reyna elena!!! you can be a very good teacher i’m sure, sana pag nakahiga ka na sa pera and stay na sa pinas makapagturo ka sa mga styudeynts natin!

Reynz, naduling ako sa mga graphs mo pero in fairness, magaling at very entertaining ang lecture portion! O, hayan, another food for your ego, lampas ka na talaga sa quota mo kamahalan ha!!

President.

Ngayon, ano yong sinasabi nyang nag-uuwian?
Wag kang mag-alala Dimaapi!

i honestly don’t like people trying to manipulate information for their own self-serving needs. me public information naman, kaso nga, siempre pag dinilever yong information na yun, mamanipulate para dun sa mga pariringan eh di naman tama eh.

wawawi! inang, pawerfoint presentation pa yan ha hehehe. by the way, i was glued to the tv the other night and i found out that another sector of workers are now in-demand in UK, Australia and Caledonia.

[Reply]
unanimous_flip,
i bet you that’s the reason why the numbers are funky. i honestly don’t believe na there are only 20,000 OFWs sa Amerika remitting an average of $328,000 annually per person versus over 400,000 OFWs $4,000 annually per person. That was the one glaring number that I noticed and i don’t know if POEA noticed this but something is definitely wrong with their numbers.
so the question becomes – what could have they done?
i agree with your theory. they only count OFWs registered at POEA therefore those numbers of OFW’s around the world maybe right – the 20,000 OFW’s in the US might also be correct.
However, I think – they included in the count yong mga remittances nang Overseas Filipinos = immigrants in the total Remittances kaya when you average the number – really really funky.
As in, I send money to the Philippines regularly but no way in can I afford to send an average of $328,000 a year!!!
Palagay nio?
[Reply]
unanimous_flip,
that’s why we all need to be vigilant but what i don’t understand, how come no one at POEA even noticed these numbers? $328,000 annual average remitance by OFWs in America is way off as an outlier and immediately it should have raised a red flag pero mukhang ako lang yata ang nagbabasa nito! hahahaha!
that’s why whatever statistics that comes out about anything in the philippines, parating hindi kapani-paniwala all the time, dala kasi nang mga pandaraya ever – ayan nakasak sak na tuloy sa mga ugat natin na there must be ANOTHER story behind it
tingnan mo 7.5% GDP, pero marami pa rin ang nakasimangot, kahit na ako, i don’t know what to believe.
[Reply]
Are they documenting only OFW cash or the total remittances from the US? kahit walang definite answers, basta madefine lang natin kung ano ang OFW ok na sakin. I have the impression na OFWs are pinoys galing sa pilipinas na nagtatrabaho sa ibang bansa para magpadala ng pera sa pilipinas (migrant workers + contract workers + TNT). It’s sounds like a dumb question, but I need to know.
[Reply]
ARE OFW’s COMING HOME?!
The answer is YES.
“Hindi na kasi Pilipinas ang HOME namin”.
natawa naman ako dito. hehe
[Reply]
issai,
it seems to me that POEA defined OFW’s two-ways:
1.) those who are documented OFW’s who leaves excluding immigrants
and then pagdating sa remittances:
2.) included na pati immigrants and migrants
why do I say this? kasi if you look at the remittances, it’s not adding up sa numbers noong documented OFWs nang POEA
[Reply]
Hay naku, basta kasi government statistics wag paniwalaan eh!

$328,000 annually. Day, kakarampot na por hora lang po ang sweldo ko na pag sinoooma trinoma mo, di pa nga aabot kahit na kalahati nang wan percent of kalahati nitong $328,000. Besides – over naman to! $328,000 times Php45 equals = Php14 million!!! EEKKKK!! SINO TONG EMPLOYERS NA NAGPAPASWELDONG GANITO?!
Eh pano na yong mga kaartehan ko? It’s expensive to maintain myself Mia.
I mean, oo na! Nagpapadala ako sa aking Boys Foundation (aged 26 to 36 only at me physical inspection and interview to get in) pero di kasama nito na bilhan sila nang condominium buwan buwan ano?!
[Reply]
Reynz, hindi tayo mag-aargue about this because all I’m saying is, the $12 B annual remittance that they showed may be correct but I totally agree with you that the sources of these remittances definitely do not add up. Kung 20,000 nga lang ang “known” OFWs natin sa states, eh naku para makapadala sila ng $328,000 annually kailangan ay 48 hours a day silang magtatrabaho, o di kaya 72 hours, hehehe! Hay naku Kamahalan, you’re the math wizard, so, I’m not arguing with you on your numbers:-)
And I’m not surprised at all that it takes a lot, lot of money to maintain your lifestyle. Royalty can be quite expensive, but Britain happily pays the bill because the prestige of having Royalty among their midst is worth their while. Katulad din sa amin dito sa queendom mo, we happily pay tribute to you (wala pa kasi kaming pera para mag-pay ng taxes eh, hehe!) kasi nga we want your queendom to go on and on.
O siya, I didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers Kamahalan.

[Reply]
rojz!
i think that basically answers my question. So ganun, yong mga Middle East remittances eh napasama sa mga tiga US! I think that’s the most logical explanation. OR baka pati yong mga immigrants na nagpapadal eh sinama nila.
But the bigger question – wala man lang nagreklamo na mali ang numbers nang POEA other than us?
Tsk Tsk Tsk!
