Philippines as an english speaking nation

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

“The Philippines is the third largest English-speaking country in the world” proclaimed by most of the government websites. Yet, over and over - on the daily papers specially those looking for call center jobs, they admit that a ridiculous percentage of Philippine graduates do not understand english - worst, they could not even speak english on a basic level.

Forget about the accent - we are talking about english proficiency here. Go out of the country. Australia for one thing, I believed has listed immigrants coming from the Philippines as a NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRY.

What gives?! How come we continue to proclaim to the world that we are english speakers when most of the people in the Philippines simply don’t even understand english?

I was just in Manila, I was all over Eastwood, Ortigas, Global City and Makati business districts. I hear a lot of pinoy english speakers with some really funny panni aksssent. As a matter of fact, mi amigo Joey, we had this Malate encounter with Ian who came to our table and said “kud ay hib yur namber plis?”. What gives?! Anu yun?!

Sa totoo lang! Based on my very unscientific survey, Filipinos are the largest Tagalog speakers in the world and I think we should just promote it as it is. Rosetta, is marketing Tagalog as the 2nd most spoken language in Asia, if I am not mistaken. Interestingly, kasama ko si Joey (again!) at the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania when we saw the Rosetta box. I’m sure, Tagalog will soon be one of the major conversational language in the world considering that Pinoys have gone global! Heck, kahit na Antarctica siguro, there are Pinoys!

As intelehenteng mga tao, we pinoys speak american english, australian english, british english, french, chinese, japanese but I really doubt that we are an english-speaking nation because we’re not! Wad-u-tink? If we are, then why can’t we speak English as English speakers do? What’s the best way for Pinoys to speeek english fluently?

We used to have our own identity. We taught Pilipino using the “abakada” and we taught English based on the alphabet. When some geniuses succeeded in modifying our “abakada” into alpabeto (back in the early 80’s) and we allowed our language to “borrow” foreign words and make it our own…that’s when the problem started and now it has evolved and mushroomed big time that the younger generation seem to have lost their identity. The “unwritten boundary” between Pilipino and English is now gone. We have adopted too much english words and phrases to the point of replacing our own Pilipino equivalent of these words. This is the sad effect of changing our abakada into alpabeto…

Overseas employment is very competitive nowadays and whether we accept it or not, mastery of the English language (hindi taglish or filipinized english) in addition to educational background and work experience, will give us great advantage over other nationalities.

They have assimilated too much filipinized english that they thought those are the right way to spell these words.

There is a remedy to this which can be done but it involves total community involvement, especially the media. It’s as simple as: Kung nag Pilipino ka sa simula ng iyong pangungusap, tapusin mo ito sa wikang Pilipino…If you started a sentence in english, by all means finish it in english!

English was my mother language. I never understood the rules when I was in school but because my parents started us with English, and I’ve delved into reading too much before, I don’t think I have any problem with it. (Except that, speaking is not my forte. So when I speak either in English or the vernacular, I kind of stutter at the start but then I’ll be able to go smoothly after a few minutes of speaking with someone fluent such as an american.)

I learned the vernacular when I started school. I was accepted at a young 5 years of age mainly because of how I speak. I never understood my classmates. Then, little by little, I learned the vernacular…

I wish I could have done what my parents have done to us, to our kids. But that’s spilled milk. All we can do now is continue to encourage them to learn the language.

It’s a big advantage. Big, big advantage. Because of it, I can walk my way through employments not supposedly mine (if the normal scale is used). You see, I’ve never been into college…for lack of money. Aside from I can’t see any course before I can immediately use even while still studying. I took up technical courses instead. Like Radio/TV Technician and Motor Rewinding. Skills is what I’m fond of. For practicality’s sake. I was blessed to be one among 16 who passed a local scholarship grant among 100+ who applied (all within the church group) for the basic computer skills which boomed at that time (Wordstar, Lotus 123, dBASE III…any of you remember that time? 1985…when XTs are still existent and 286s were then brand new technology).

Where did that end me up to? I was able to apply for a measly job at the Mayor’s Office of Olongapo City…that’s my hometown…I got the position of Personnel Aide but doing programming job (dbase was called programming then). How much? 1,043/month! That was in 1988.

I stayed there for less than 2 years and I needed to go to where my family was…San Pedro, Laguna….that’s when I got a job after a few months under the DENR…a special project that handles the watersheds of Mindoro…but I still worked with computers…286 and 386 then…I got to travel to both Occidental and Oriental Mindoro teaching the basics of computer operation. Everything computer is what my job entails. (I’ve even tried tinkering with it since I got technical knowledge of electronics.) Stayed with that job for 4 years…started with 5,500, ended with 7,500…1994…my firstborn greeted the world.

Then we put up a home business (offset printing)…but for lack of capital, it did not last that long.

In 2000, somebody asked my friend that they needed someone who can create their website. I was recommended. Contractual. 5 months. Then I had to fill up the application form…with all those info they need, mine was the least awesome…except for the asking price…15k. I got the job because I can simply do the job, matched with English fluency…one thing I got that most of the employees who had high degrees in college do not possess.

Well, it was some milestone in my life…humbling yet dashed with pride…

Amen again, Kuta. I often work with professors and academicians and some of them teach Filipino. (Yes, Kuta, they made it Filipino. It’s not Pilipino anymore. Ganun ka-dynamic ang mother tongue natin hehehe) I noticed that there are two schools of thought when it comes to usage of words in Filipino, especially if the word do have a direct Filipino translation. The first school of thought goes for the English version of the word and the second one goes for the Filipinized version.

Por eksampol, este, for example, let’s take the word CAKE. So, how are we going to write, “The cake is sweet” in Filipino? The proponents of the first school of thought would write “Ang cake ay matamis.” Those from the other school of thought would write “Ang keyk ay matamis.” (Yes, ladies and gentlemen, KEYK is an accepted sfelling, este, spelling of CAKE in Filipino even if the letter “C” has been assimilated into the alfabeto (Yes, Kuta, ginagamit na rin ang “alfabeto”, with an “F”) So if two teachers would write two different spellings of a particular word, it would create confusion in the mind of the learners especially the young ones.

    Hi!

I’m a native Tagalog speaker (Olongapo City) but I don’t know if people really talk like that. My wife and many of her girlfriends love cake very much and they say “Antamis ng cake.” or “Matamis ang cake”. The TRIGGER(Ang)+SUBJECT(cake)+LINKER(ay)+ADJECTIVE(matamis) order of sentence construction is rarely ever used, except in kindergarten school levels or if one is under hypnosis (kidding). :)

Eventually, the desitiny of a language will be determined by usage, purpose and practicality throughout time. The Japanese managed to preserve theirs through adaptation and appropriation. For ex. they had a hard time pronouncing TV (tee-vee as in television); they Japanicized it as ‘terebi’ instead of looking for an equivalent word that doesn’t initially exist; after all, TV is an American import. The point is, Tagalog will go the way of Latin if it loses its base of speakers centuries from now because technology and civilization will change the world. A language will stay if it still serves the purpose of its speakers. Look at Quechua and Basque.

I love Tagalog as much as the next person and would like to see it enriched in the years to come.

But anyway… I agree… in order for one to be proficient you have to practice. If you want to be fluent with english try reading any book, essay, magazine… etc… (the one in English, please) while your reading… if you are alone… read outloud so that you could correct any wrong pronounciation you did. There was a graduate study for literacy in elementary students from University of Pennsylvania that a person who reads outloud tend to have a better diction when pronouncing words….

    So practice…..

Agree withe the dictionary…so, not only will you know the meaning of certain words but you get to learn to PRONOUNCE the right proNUNciation…and spelling… :)
I threw our tv away when the only one we bought from surplus lost its video…my mom gave me hers which needed repair (that would cost more than a thousand bucks)…but sold it instead for P75…TV is one-way feeding of all sorts evil brainfood…I can get news from the radio…or the internet…which i just scan anyway…and i get to save on electricity…imagine, with tv + internet (which i cannot be without)…

I also recommend books that teach how to spell right…I bought one a year ago…just forgot the title…but there are a number of them out there…it teaches when to double a letter and when not to, the -ible and -able words, -ly words, oh there’s just a lot to learn…and when you go through the book, you’ve mastered spelling in english…unless you experience brain farts from time to time…or amnesia…After i was done with it, i gave it to my eldest daughter…who has no time to read it yet :(
We rent VCDs and DVDs…but never a tagalog one…not that we don’t support the local movie industry…it’s just not brain-healthy…but still, my kids are not like what we were when we were young…truly, the peer pressure and influence is great…

Speaking of influences…did you know that teachers are even the prime bad examples of kids?

One time one of my kids brought home a bingo card which, she said, i had to pay. I asked what for and she said there’s a bingo party that coming saturday…I immediately wrote to her teacher (I rarely show up in school since oftentimes than not it’s about shelling out some money!) and told her I won’t accept it…then “scolded” her asking if it’s what the school teaches the kids now…to gamble??? etc..etc…the letter was a yellow pad long, back-to-back.

Then my eldest told me one day that their adviser warned them they’re going to have a visitor…and if that visitor asks if she (teacher) is selling stuff to the students, that they should answer ‘no.’ SHE’S TEACHING MY KID TO LIE!!! We’ve put a lot of effort teaching our kids the christian way, God’s way, even before they learn to talk…at least they know what is right and what is wrong. Many times they get bullied in school and they come home crying…I tell them to tell the teacher…but the teacher wouldn’t care…so I tell them to practice defense instead (like if you’re going to be poked or jabbed, be aware of your surroundings so you can avoid it). But i’ll just be sorry for the other kids if they mess with my kids and my kids forget or choose to forget to just avoid them…they can hit hard it hurts for days…

Oh, and I remember another incident from my youngest…7 yrs old…her teacher was teaching spelling…i forgot the word at this very moment but it is a very simple word…a word that you have to double the last letter before adding -ed to get a past tense…you know what? she asked another teacher (grade 2), who happened to pass by, the correct spelling! I was laughing when my kid was relating the story. What??? My teacher doesn’t know how to spell that simple word when I’ve known it since a year ago??? Psst! hold your pride! I had to warn her…

    Sorry…I got carried away… :D

    “Don’t english me, I don’t english you.”

Mine was a true experience with a doctor at Cardinal Santos in Greenhills when I was in Manila.

My niece was complaining about her tonsils at that time, and she was having some fever, so, I decided to bring her over to Cardinal Santos. We were referred to in there because my brother’s wife’s cousin is one of the doctor there and that, they were accepting my niece’s US insurance carrier. But when we arrived, she wasn’t around, so the receptionist referred us to this doctor. But, we have to waste another 2 hours roaming around Virra Mall waiting for the doctor to finish his lunch. Yeap. That stupid lunch time in Manila!

Time came, we went back and there he was. My niece doesn’t speak tagalog but she can understand it. But the doctor preferred to talk me, I guess to get some initial information, I’m not exactly sure if this was some kind of an SOP, but it was ok. I did noticed that he was talking to me in straight “ahh-ahhh english” with a really bad accent and I continue to respond in tagalog. So, now, I was forced to use my english which is noticeably americanized. I noticed he got annoyed because I was talking fast with no ahh-ahh.

Then out of the blue ! apparently referring to the fact that - if my niece is already having a fever that would not go away for days, he said… “………..DON’T TEMPORIZE IT!”… I said… “What?!”.

Because I got pissed that they would not take blood test and so many more cannot do this, that and whatever else, I didn’t say anything anymore. I thanked the doctor and we left. We went directly to the Medical Center in Ortigas. We waited for another hour, but who cares, my niece got her medications, she was cleared and we were talking in tagalog. And although I think I knew the obvious meaning of “temporize”, I have no idea if this is an actual english word. Can somebody check? :-)

    Who’s the boss???

Spare the rod and spoil the child…

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it…

Honor your father and your mother…this is the first commandment with a promise…that you may live long in the land…

Those are what we inculcate in their little minds…

    Here’s To The Heroes
Music: John Barry / Lyrics: Don Black
with additional Greek Lyrics by Mario Frangoulis

    Here’s to the heroes
    Those few who dare
    Heading for glory
    Living a prayer

    Here’s to the heroes
    Who change our lives
    Thanks to the heroes
    Freedom survives

    Here’s to the heroes
    Who never rest
    They are the chosen
    We are the blessed

    Here’s to the heroes
    Who aim so high
    Here’s to the heroes
    Who do or die

Mia monacha prosefchi (A single prayer)
Pera os pera alithini (Truthful throughout)
Gia panta mesa stin kardia mou (Forever in my heart)

    Here’s to the heroes
    Who aim so high
    Here’s to the heroes
    Who do or die

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV0i6Tpfxm0

    Italian with English lyrics

Nei sogni che facevo da bambino
vivevo la mia vita come un re,
    avevo giorni pieni di sole,
    non c’era mai dolore.

    Vincero, perdero
    la mia vita vivro,
    io da solo dovro camminare.
    Vincero, perdero
    la mia strada faro,
    giochero la partita della vita.

Ho avuto brevi attimi di gioia,
    momenti interminabili di noia,
ho avuto giorni pieni di sole,
    io so cos’e il dolore…

    Vincero, perdero
    la mia vita vivro,
    io da solo sapro continuare.
    Vincero, perdero
    la mia strada ora so,

    eppure io vivro…

    Vincero, perdero
    luci ed ombre io avro,
    ma da solo dovro continuare.
    Vincero, perdero
    la mia vita sara
come un viaggio lontano da fare.

    Vincero, perdero
    la mia vita vivro,
    io da solo dovro camminare.
    Vincero, perdero
    la mia strada ora so…
    Vincero, perdero
    la partita giochero…
    Vincero, perdero
    ma da solo…

I Will Win, I Will Lose

In the dreams I dreamed as a child
I lived my life as a king
My days were filled with sunshine
And there was never any pain

I will win, I will lose
    I will live my life
I will have to make my way on my own
I will win, I will lose
I will create my own path
I will play the game of life

I’ve had brief moments of joy
    Endless moments of boredom
I’ve had days full of sunshine
    I know what pain is…

I will win, I will lose
    I will live my life
I will know how to continue on my own
I will win, I will lose
    Now I know my path
But I’ll play the game of life on my own

A king, I will certainly not be
    And yet, I’ll live…

I will win, I will lose
I will have light and shadow
But alone I’ll have to go on
I will win, I will lose
    My life will be
like a long journey to make

I will win, I will lose
    I will live my life
I will have to make my way on my own
I will win, I will lose
    Now I know my path…
I will win, I will lose
    I will play the game…
I will win, I will lose
    But alone…

i mean, we pinoys can learn english, french, german, pero really, Filipino, Pilipino or Tagalog is the best! Especially kamo sa mga jokes! Andun ang punch eh! ahhaha

Yes, it wil be kinda impressive that we have the second language as english.

  112. legobeast88 Says:

I totally agree with you. Among my circle of friends in the Philippines only a handful can hold a decent conversation in english. I was also surprised when i got into college, only a selected few can get into a debate in pure english. The sad truth is that I didn’t become good in english studying in school, but rather because i like english and learned by myself.

“The Philippines is the third largest English-speaking country in the world”

What does this mean? Population-wise? Percentage-wise of people? By land area? Because India has more English speakers if you count the number of citizens who can speak the language.

I think it’s not enough that one knows the language. Comprehension is the key. Of what use is it if we do not understand what we are trying to say to each other? That’s like Scrabble players who can play words like “dzo”, “lanx”, “habdab” and “thurible” but don’t know their meanings.

Rosetta, is marketing Tagalog as the 2nd most spoken language in Asia, if I am not mistaken. Interestingly, kasama ko si Joey (again!) at the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania when we saw the Rosetta box.

What is this box? Was at the King of Prussia (beautiful mall, I should say) but didn’t see this. :-)
