A picture, perfect city.
It’s called the City of Brotherly Love. It’s the first capital of the United States. It’s where the first Supreme Court of the United States is located. It’s where the Declaration of Independence was signed. It’s where the Liberty Bell is located. I heard, Chuva cracked it one time and hit it with a martilyo kaya nagkabitak-bitak. He works right across the street. It’s where the famous Art Museum is located where you will find my picture hanging on the wall, and where Rocky Balboa climbed up the stairs and people sang kumbaya. It’s one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the East Coast with a very vibrant arts and music. It’s home to the Phillies, the Flyers, the Eagles, the 76rs, the Wings, the Phantoms, the Soul and much more!
But right now, something is going wrong in my city. It’s this:
Among the top 10 cities, Philadelphia reported the highest violent-crime rate last year, up 5.9 percent. Nationwide, violent crime increased 1.3 percent last year over 2005, according to the FBI’s annual survey of 11,723 law enforcement agencies. Violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
We’re the talk of the United States. All of the networks talk about us. We’re on the nightly news almost every night. And according to the experts, there are no rational explanation. All of the major dailies covers us. Almost every day. USA Today, Washington Post, The New York Times heck! I would not be surprised if even Bulatlat eh nakabulatlat na kami.
But what’s really interesting about this is that – there is a new theory being floated around and it’s got some immigration connection.
According to the latest news (Homicides soar in some East Coast cities), Philadelphia and other cities in a bloodstained corridor along the East Coast are seeing a surge in killings, and one of the most provocative explanations offered by criminal-justice experts is this: not enough new immigrants.
THE WHAT?! NOT ENOUGH NEW IMMIGRANTS?!
YEAP! That’s what they are saying.
Heck, for once, immigrants are finally getting some good names here. Crimebusters?!
The theory holds that waves of hardworking, ambitious immigrants reinvigorate desperately poor black and Hispanic neighborhoods and help keep crime down. It is a theory that runs counter to the widely held notion that immigrants are a source of crime and disorder.
