I was reading Ellen Tordesillas Election Coverage and I couldn’t help laughing at Hindinapinoy posting about the Philippine Senatorial Candidates. Apparently, he found this from another blogsite ( I hope he doesn’t mind!!!) I left them a message that I will pick up this comment post and post it here for your reading pleasure. Here’s what I am talking about:

Classifying Philippine Senatorial Candidates

Majority of democratic nations classify electoral candidates mainly along political party lines. The United States has been operating under a two-party system (Ross Perot and Theodore Roosevelt notwithstanding). The United Kingdom has its Conservative and Labor parties.

Unfortunately, this system is not the case for the Philippines. Apart from killing and stifling freedom for 20 years, the dictator Marcos left us with a repugnant legacy: a democracy with no clear party affiliations. The Liberal & Nacionalista two-party system died with the enactment of the reprehensible Presidential Decree No. 1081.

POLITICAL DYNASTIES a.k.a. ELECT ME BECAUSE OF MY SURNAME OR POLITICAL ANCESTRY

Francis Escudero

I am in my mid-30s and I can still remember the days when the only Escudero in power is the crony minister of Marcos. Nowadays, laglag ang panty ng mga babae dahil sa impressed na impressed sila kay Francis (the only Escudero they ever knew). I find him annoying actually with his monotonous voice and Kermit-The-Frog eyes always criticizing the system and yet actively participating in it. Where did his family’s wealth come from? Come on people.THINK!

Aquilino Pimentel III

This is such a waste. Can you imagine two Pimentels in the Senate? And his defense is that the ban on political dynaties should only apply to the President. I used to admire the Pimentel family together with the late Mayor Cesar Climaco. Now, the mere mention of their name is revolting to me. The son of the senator who precipitated the fall of Estrada (severely criticizing the exclusion of the 2nd envelope during the impeachment trial) is now running UNDER the party of the man his father tried to impeach!

Benigno Aquino III

I feel sad for the Aquino name. Like a car, it has depreciated and deteriorated to the point of being just another vehicle in the junkyard. Imagine, the son of a national hero and a former president - who symbolized “ang diwa ng EDSA” - is now running under the party of a corrupt former president together with a coup plotter, a defeated vice-presidential candidate and the son of a minister who (together with the dictator Marcos) ran the country to the ground. I don’t think Ninoy would have approved of “the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend” approach.

John Osmena

A disgrace to the legacy of the late President Osmena. The quintessential political butterfly.

Sonia Roco

Senator Raul Roco’s legacy is eroding fast. Why would his wife join forces with Erap?

Alan Peter Cayetano

This bratty mestizo was not able to make it as a U.P. Student Council member. How much more the Senate? Siguro dahil sa ma-e-expel na sa House kaya tumakbo sa pagka-senador ang isang ito. He exemplifies the fact that gullible Filipinos will believe anyone as long as he screams lies loud ENOUGH to drown others around him.

Tessie Aquino-Oreta

Naaalala niyo pa ba ang EDSA 2? Naaalala niyo ang “dancing queen” na nagsayaw dahil hindi nabuksan ang 2nd envelope? Well, Di na sila bati ni Erap ngayon. She’s now with the Administration? What the f..udge? I can still remember the chants we used on EDSA back then: ERAP “Resign! OSMENA B*ding! MIRIAM B*liw! ORETA P*kp*k! (And NO,This does not refer to any body part)

ENTERTAINERS a.k.a. “ELECT ME BECAUSE YOU’VE SEEN ME ON TV”

Loren Legarda

People might argue that she should not be lumped with the entertainers. However, I would argue that anyone who has been labeled as a “political prostitute” knows how to put on a show. What I don’t get is this: If you feel you were cheated and you’ve been mentioning that everytime you’re on camera and you don’t recognize the government, then why would you run for the Senate? Ito ba’y dahil sa Senado ka lang puwedeng manalo kayo doon ka susuksok? And don’t forget the ERAP impeachment, pa-cry effect pa ’sya.

Vicente Sotto III

Ang tanga naman natin as a people kung ihahalal natin uli si Tito Escalera. People have been told that they should NOT equate an actor’s screen persona with his real-life or political capabilities. For this particular case, I would make an exception.

Ralph Recto

When will we see someone as great as the late Sen. Claro M. Recto? As of this writing, his family pales in comparison with his accomplishments and strength of character. It can be argued that he’s also an ENTERTAINER (the next category) given that he’s Mr. Vilma Santos.

Francis Pangilinan

Come on people…Let’s face it. We see Ate Shawie’s full face everytime you see Kiko. Right? Enough said…
