We don’t need your services no more!

Several weeks ago, there was this big layoff at work. We let go almost 22% of our workforce. Well, not me. Them. I feel for those people who lost their jobs. After all, I was in the same position several years ago. I was promised a promotion after I finish my MBA. I was really excited. Then… 2 weeks before my graduation, I was told that they don’t need my services anymore.

During my graduation, I decided not to invite anyone to attend the ceremonies. Juste moi. Walking down the aisle, getting my diploma, cussing my former employer, with not enough four-letter word, and yes Matilda, I was crying.

Two weeks ago, I got a call from a friend. She needed my help. She works as a manager. I know she’s very talented, a real good worker that you can depend on. You see Matilda, where we work, it really depends on the day and how the light shines. Not only do you have to deal with the bullshit attitude and power-hungry crazed people especially where I work, but get this, in Pennsylvania and also in New Jersey, we have what we call an AT-WILL employment. Meaning, they could fire the shit out of you for whatever reason under the hood of your car.

Which is what happened to Lissa. Our Belgian friend. She was told that they don’t her services. No Matilda, she was not given two weeks notice. Not even a two-second notice. They told her that she can leave now. That’s it. This is the kind of life we live here. We don’t have the 13th month pay that we have come to know back home. We don’t have any security nor guarantee that we’ll have our jobs for a certain amount of time. Should we decide to quit, we are required to give them two weeks notice, else, they will withold payments to you. But if they decide you’re a useless piece of shit, then it’s just a simple: We don’t need your services no more!

That is plain sad. It’s still better here in the Philippines. At least you’re given a month-long notice and you’re given separation/severance pay especially when you’ve worked too long…

Well, this is our reality here. I’m sure there are other companies out there that offers severance packages that do care about the people who work there. Unfortunately, there are some wayward companies that still treats people ridiculously different. I’ve been treated like that. Just a piece of shit. And I don’t have any qualms whatsoever of even saying the damn word especially when it hits home and you see your friend gets the axe.
