To Claire at sa lahat nang mga anak kong pumasa sa nursing board exams, pati na yong hindi pumasa at naghahanap nang trabaho, let me tell you sumtin’… the application letter and resume or job application letter are basically your marketing material. Eto yong pinaka-importanteng papel na gagawin mo sa buong buhay mo once you start looking for a job. Por que? Dahil you are basically selling yourself.
I will not re-invent the wheel kasi gawa na tong mga how to write a cover letter, a job application letter, how to write a resume and all that. Actually, they are all over the internet. Search mo lang sya and you will find every nitty gritty detail kung pano buuin ang isang cover letter and a resume.
Ok, let’s start with your cover letter.
Your application letter is isa na yata sa pinaka-importanteng love letter na gagawin mo sa buong buhay mo. Wag na wag mong madaliin ari at I am telling you,?kahit na sa tindahan ni Aling Karing hindi ka kukunin. Ang epektibong cover letter will earn you a phone call, a text message o kaya a letter for an interview. Pagka bali-balikwa ang application or cover letter mo, aba! mag-aral ka uli! Dahil I’m sure enemployed ang dating mo. What’s the difference? Hay naku, simple key points lang anak. Di mo na kailangang mag PhD to come up with a good one.
Put some personal touch
Ang ibig kong sabihin, wag yong lalagyan mo nang pulbos at titiklupin mong pahati at pabalang gaya nong ginagawa mo nong grade wan ka’t bibigay mo sa nililigawan mong totay pa.?Ang ibig kong sabihin, wag na wag mong?i-ge-generalize ang letter mo. Describe mo yong particular experience and skills mo?at kung pano to makakapagcontribute sa business organization an ina-aplayan mo. Gaya sa exams, wag kang mango-ngopya. Instead, gawin mo para yong sulat mo represent your individuality and your capabilities.
Address to a specific person
Wag na wag kang magsusulat nang application letter addressed to the TITLE. Hanapin mo yong pangalan nang padadalhan mo nang sulat. Hay naku, wag mo akong tanungin kung saan mahahanap ang pangalan at ma-popokpok lang kita. If the name is unavailable, tawagan mo sila and?ask for the person’s name or at least the name of the personnel manager. Ako? Whenever I received an application letter at nakalagay lang na: Accounting Director, Finance Director, The Human Resource – I file the letter immediately sa thrash can. Why? Yong mga nagpadala nito eh mga tamaditos.
Catch the reader’s attention
Pag ako nagbabasa nang mga application letter, iisa ang hinahanap ko. Yanigin mo ako. Di ba? Ayoko nang boring letter. Kelangan ma-stimulate mo?yong interest ko. For example, you may want to begin with a reference to an advertisement that prompted your application. (Basahin nyo tong story ko kung saan ko nakuha yong ad nang trabaho ko sa Princeton.) Pag sinabi mo yon, magugulat pa sila dahil epektibo pala yong ad nila. O di winner ka na agad!
Anong mga isusulat mo sa 1st paragraph?
Be clear sa gusto mo.

Kung nakita mo sa dyaryo yong ad, name the position na nasabi dun sa ad and identify the source, for example: “your advertisement for a sexy and beautiful nurse, which appeared in the Reyna Elena Times, February 1, 2007,…”

Kung nag-po-prospect ka lang, try to identify the job title used by the organization.
Yong first paragraph mo dapat parang preview nang buong letter mo para alam nang reader mo kung ano ang susunod. Wag kang magbigay nang climax na tipon… TA-DANGG!!! Hindi to DreamGirls.
I-Highlight mo ang qualifications mo
Organize the middle paragraphs in terms of the qualifications that best suit you for the job and the organization. Meaning, kung ang on-the-job experience is your strongest qualification, discuss mo to?in detail and show how you can apply it?sa pangangailangan nang kompanya.?If you have two or three areas that you think are strong, you can develop additional paragraphs. Make your letter strong enough to convince readers that your distinctive background qualifies you for the job but not so long that length will turn readers off. Some employers recommend a maximum of four paragraphs.
Other pointers:

Conclude with a clear, courteous request to set up an interview, and suggest a procedure for doing so.

Be professional. Wag mong gagayahin yong mga katimangan ni Reyna dito. Baka itulak ka lang sa bintana. Ayusin mo yong ingles mo, yong gamit nang wurds but words. Yong spilling but spelling. You know what I mean!

Wag na wag kang magmamayabang. Di ko na to i-i-explain ano?

Seek advice. Gusto mo, send mo sa mga diwata ko ang cover letter mo at makilatis namin dito.

The sample letter I made obviously, I was making fun of it. I can’t believe that someone wrote me and was very angry at how lousy my letter was. You need to calm down and read between the lines. That was supposed to be a joke but essentially everything is in there.

there are 2 things here that I wanted to know:
1.) are you responding to an ad? or
2.) are you voluntarily applying?
i will post my response as if it is number 1, ok? This is very straightforward. Wala nang kaek-ekan dahil wa ka naman expereince right? If you have attended training, maybe we could revise the letter to better suit it. Or ayusin mo na lang para maihighlight.

simpli lang yan olen.
kung hindi mo ilalagay ang desired position, baka akalain nila, nag-aaplay ka as President of the company. duda ko parang general application ang ginagawa mo. paki-basa nang entry at intindihin uli. kelangan ALAM mo kung anong ina-aplayan mo. hindi ka nila papansinin at sasabihin kong wala silang panahon na maghanap nang tugmang trabaho para seyo. tandaan mo, sangkatutak ang naghahanap nang trabaho. yon ang kalaban mo. pinahihirapan mo lang ang HR nyan. basura ang kahihinatnan nang application mo.

To all those requesting assistance on how to write an application letter, do me a favor, please read the entry first. If there is something that you don’t understand let me know.
Next, there is no such thing as “blank application letter” that you can send to anybody and for any position. I’ve explained it already.
What I’m reading from most of you and the emails I received is that, you want a quick application letter ready-made for you. This will not work. If you can’t draft a simple application letter, there is probably a high probability that you won’t be hired.

I’d write it very simply this way:
Dear Mr. Pedregosa,
Enclosed, please find my resume in response to your recent posting looking for a volunteer nurse for Iloilo Mission Hospital. I have a BS degree in Nursing from Iloilo Doctor’s College on [insert date] and passed the licensure exams on November 2009.
Next, describe any on the job training you did. You only need to tell that you were on the job training for what hospital. I will delete the following:

b.) I am an enthusiastic candidate with all the skills necessary to join this program and contribute to patient care at the hospital.
c.) During my clinical exposures in various Hospitals here in Iloilo, Antique and Guimaras I have learned a range of nursing skills on the job.

Why, because the other candidates could also claim of the same thing and who knows, they might even be better than you. What you need to do is limit your entry about the duration of the training, what was the training about and the place.
If you write things like this:
j.) I have attended several seminars that enhanced my knowledge related for this profession
Then be prepared to list down the seminars on a separate piece of paper. As I have said, do not bore your reader. Do not make your letter way too verbose. For an entry level nurse, especially a volunteer, there isn’t much to write, so don’t write a term paper.

Please take time to read the blog entry.
1.) I’ve said it already: address the letter to a specific person.
2.) Double check the position. Is it really “pharmacy lady” position? If it is, then change the words “entry level position”.
3.) Do not send your transcript of records unless requested. You need only send a cover letter and a resume.
4.) Please double check the spelling. “Farther Saturnino”?
5.) Please change the dates I’ve indicated.
6.) Don’t be redundant. They already know you are an applicant.
7.) Don’t write just so you want fill up the full bond paper.

ang isang nakikita ko sa mga humihingi nang tulong sa reyna ay iisa lamang. hindi marurunong mag-sulat nang english ang mga eto. kaya iisa lang naman ang tulong na hinihingi ninyo. na si reyna ang magsulat nang resume at application ninyo. hindi tulong ang hinihingi ninyo. pandaraya po yan dahilang hindi kayo nagsipag-aral nang nasa kolehiyo kayo.

Wala akong sample application letters. Kagaya nga nang blinag ko, walang isang application letter na papalitan mo lang ang address, yon na. Hindi. Kailangan, alamin mo kung ano ang requirements na hinahanap nila – tapos tingnan mo ang qualifications mo kung meron ka nun, saka ka gumawa nang application letter. Yan parati ang sinasabi ko na mas gusto nang karamihang employers and personal na letter na ginagawa kesa sa isang “canned” letter.
Kung gusto mo, gumawa ka nang matingnan natin. I-post mo dito sa comments.

sending a cover letter is not a guarantee that you’ll be selected but it’s always good to send one especially if you’re sending a bunch of documents, depending on their requirements. a cover letter is also an “explanation” letter why you’re sending a resume.
i don’t speak for all employers, but in my experience, i don’t like receiving a resume without any cover letter. why? because i don’t know why they’re sending me one esp if we don’t have any opening or we have not advertised for any position.

i’ve received a number of emails – all asking for help in writing resumes and cover letters. unfortunately, they all ask the same thing. that I WRITE THEM ALL. that’s not helping. you have to read what I wrote and understand it. it’s very simple. i will not prepare YOUR resume. i will not write YOUR cover letter. that’s not right. you have to learn.
the only ones i check are those who prepare their own resumes and prepare their own cover letters. why? nag-effort sila noh?
kudos to Palaboi from Cebu. i think he did a pretty good job.

Pointer people, pointers. I received a couple of cover letters to review. One thing I noticed – baka mamaya magka-ka-klase kayo and sharing cover letters. Why? They all start with – GREETINGS! Argh! Delete. That’s very hmpt!

Apologies if I am just responding now. Maganda ang sinulat mong resume. However, if I were you, I will delete the following:
1.) Tanggalin mo yong high school and elementary information. Hindi na kelangan yan. If you insist, leave the high school but definitely, wala nang paki-alam ang mga yan about your elementary.
2.) Tanggalin mo yong Personal Information and I believe eto ang maling ginagawa saten. Especially now na andaming nagnanakaw nang personal information, wag kang maglalagay nang personal information sa resume mo. You give it if they ask for it.
3.) Objective – typically ginagamet ang “Objective” sa resume pag kalimitan, baguhan ka lang sa job market. Given na I don’t have your resume, hulaan ko na lang. I think, dahil 2010 graduate ka and you just passed the board, I would assume, wala ka pang work? Dahil kung marami ka nang work, wag mo nang gamitin ang “Objective” kundi – EXPERIENCE SUMMARY na ang dapat mong ilagay. But just the same, let’s just say na baguhan ka. I would change the objective to say: “An entry-level position as (state the position that you are applying for) that offers professional advancement.

Hello folks, especially those who have been sending me emails, please take my advice:
1.) The only way to learn how to write an application letter is to try writing one. Follow the pointers I have written here and READ… READ all the comments written here.
2.) If you are posting your letter her for me to edit, please do not post personal information about you. Be careful about those data.
3.) Please do not ask me to write the application letter FOR YOU. It will not work. Come interview, you will not make it. You have to do the basic work.
