I love Cebu City. As far as I am concerned, it is the best city in the world that I have visited. Well…. except for Budapest, Prague, London, Paris, Montreal, Bogota, Amsterdam, Brussels, Baguio, Dagupan, Naga, Bacolod, Ili-ilo, Puerto Princesa, Roxas, Makati and Pasig. (Andami ano?
I love Cebu. I wish, I was the Governess of Cebu. I must have travelled to Cebu bizillian times when I was still working in Makati. I learned how to speak Cebuano kay nagpatudlo man ko mag-sulti Cebuano. Nindot kaayo ang Cebu ug daghan guapo!!! But that’s all that I could speak now because it’s been a long time!
I love sinugba! I still remember Chicken Burst, Magellan Hotel, Cebu Plaza, Urgello (Ugh!) and Colon, my favorite shopping area at that time, Mango Avenue at Julius whatevah - yong andun sa Circle?
But there is something going on in Cebu City right now. It’s like a coming out party of some sorts. They are hosting the 12th ASEAN Summit. And for you people who only knows the mountains in Montana and Wyoming from the Brokeback Mountains, ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Summit is when they meet and chika-chika. No, that’s not the Federasyon nang mga Kwan ni Luke. Totoo sila!
Cebu is a beautiful city that enjoyed an unbelievable economic boom that has lasted for several decades and it’s just about time for Cebu to play host to some high-flying international and important event like the ASEAN Summit. As a matter of fact, it’s important that we have another city in the Philippines to be just like that and Cebu is perfect to host the event.
And so, here were are. They have now inaugurated the CICC and all the fanfares that goes with it. Until I started reading something that seems to bring me back to the Imeldific years.
It’s like! WHOA! Here’s what I found out from reading articles about what’s going on in Cebu:
-
Some 6,000 armed police and troops, stepped up security and road closures for many locals -
-
So, the only way to go to work and go to school? Fly ka. Sorry ka kung hindi ka mana-nanggal. Makisakay ka.
-
-
December 11 to 14, all schools and government offices in Cebu City and the nearby towns of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu will be close.
-
Yeeheeey!!! Pyesta na naman!!!
-
-
From an original budget of 250 million pesos (five million dollars) the cost has escalated to some 800 million pesos and counting.
-
Eh dyan tayo magaling eh. Talent nating mga Pinoy ang padding here, padding there padding ebriwhere.
-
-
The grey steel structure resembles a shopping mall without windows.
-
Pasalamat kayo hindi kawayan ang ginamit. Nagrereklamo pa kayo!
-
-
Months earlier bulldozers cleared squatter camps around the CICC and palms were planted to hide the mounds of debris.
-
-
-
The city council has spent millions giving the provincial capital a makeover to impress the foreign dignitaries and their wives.
-
GOOD! Pa-impress dafat! Yan ang mga turo saatin di ba? Image is sumtin’! Sige! Yung mga pose! Mga CONIO!!!
-
-
Some 1.5 million pesos has been spent just to light Osmena Boulevard using state-of-the-art French street lighting.
-
Tanga!
-
-
An Anti-Mendicancy Task Force has cleared the streets of “psychotic vagrants” and dumped them in villages outside the city.
-
Putang buhay to!!! Pag poor ka, dump ka lang!!!
-
-
The small army of children who usually work the busy streets selling trinkets and flowers have been moved to shelters while many of the red light districts have been cleared of prostitutes.
-
Ganon?! Basta itapon?
-
-
Even Cebu City’s jail is to be closed down and its inmates moved so as not to offend to visitors.
-
Call Chuva Chienes. Palitan ang damit with designer jeans. Give em some make-up.
-
-
Villages have been cleaned up and the rusting roofs replaced with new sheets of iron.
-
Swerte nang me mga bahay na yon! Free ba yong bubong?
-
-
Fishing villages near the two bridges linking Mactan Island to Cebu have also been given a makeover with a coat of green paint.
-
Yeap.
-
-
All hotels, big and small, have raised their room rates by at least 50 percent — in some cases 100 percent or more — to reap a whirlwind from the estimated 2,000 foreign and local media, and 10,000 ASEAN and other delegates expected to attend the summit.
-
Mga holdapppeeerrrr!!!!
-
Do you guys read something between the lines that I am reading of what it is that their doing??? I mean, what’s obvioous is obvious. There’s something else.
It’s our Filipino Culture: At it’s best on display right now at the 12th Asean Summit. It’s happening right now in Cebu! Did you notice that?! HA HA HA I LURVEE OUR CULTURE!!!
Yeap! That’s our culture. That’s how we were taught. This is what we do. We fake it. Everything!
LIGHTS? FAKE!
CLEANLINESS? FAKE!
CONIO IMPROVED CITY? FAKE!
NO MENDICANCY? FAKE!
NO PROSTITUTES? FAKE!
NEW ROOF NANG MGA BAHAY? FAKE!
PEYK PEYK PEYK PEYK!!!!
In the Philippines we were taught to call it “hospitality”. And so, we called it as such. Now, look how much this hospitality is costing us! Ha! Ha! Ha!
When we have visitors in our house, what do we do? We give them the best room, the best comforters, the plates that has been in display for 100 years is now gonna come out of hibernation to be used by the guest, we spruce up our yards, we clean up ourselves, we show off as if everything is ok. It’s all pretend. Isn’t it?
And then when the visitors leave? balik sa dati. Nakatunganga na naman.

Ang sabi ni Mader Elena…
“In the Philippines we were taught to call it “hospitality”. And so, we called it as such. Now, look how much this hospitality is costing us! Ha! Ha! Ha!
“When we have visitors in our house, what do we do? We give them the best room, the best comforters, the plates that has been in display for 100 years is now gonna come out of hibernation to be used by the guest, we spruce up our yards, we clean up ourselves, we show off as if everything is ok. It’s all pretend. Isn’t it?
“And then when the visitors leave? balik sa dati.
Pero one thing good you’ll get out of me…i don’t put my best foot forward…wala akong best foot…better foot pa…kasi dalwa lang paa ko noh…kung best e di ibig sabihin 3 paa ko???
[Reply]

Mga Pinoy madrama davah…. eh if the stuff around us could talk, ano kaya naman drama nila?
Electric Fan: “Pinapaikot mo lang ako.
Nagsasawa na ako. Mabuti
pang patayin mo na lang ako.”
Winnie d’ Pooh: “Hindi lahat ng walang
salawal ay bastos!”
Ipis: “Alam mo ba wala akong
ibang hinangad kundi ang mapalapit sa
iyo. Pero patuloy ang pag-iwas mo”
Hipon: “Sige hubaran mo ako! Alam ko namang
katawan ko lang ang habol mo!”
Gasolina: “Ayoko na! Pag nagmamahal ako lagi na
lang maraming tao ang nagagalit! Wala
ba akong karapatang magmahal?!?”
babalik at babalik ako!
